The Simple Woman's Daybook . . .

FOR TODAY, August 30th, 2016

Outside my window ...
The sun is well up now.  I am a bit later getting started this morning.  After having had a week in which I did not sleep very well, last night I finally slept the sleep of the dead, only waking up three times and being able to fall back asleep easily after each.  Straight from 9:30 pm until almost 6 am.   Wow.  Did I ever need that!

I am thinking ...
I hope that I get to play with my calligraphy today . . . I still need to take a picture for you.

In the kitchen ...
SAM_1012

A delicious something to do with all those courgettes/zucchini that are available and clogging up our gardens at the moment.   Courgette Gratin.  It's really really good!

Easy Chicken Enchilada Skillet, from Gimme Some Oven.  This looks fabulous!  I love Tex Mex.  I might have to adapt it a bit but hey ho!

Good to know ...

A sewing machine presser food guide from Love Sewing.

I am creating ...

Storage Cube Boxes made from fabric, from The Sewing Directory.

A book shelf dollhouse.  From Love and Hot Glue.

Crochet Slouch Hat tutorial from Sewrella.

Sewing Kit in a Jar from  Martha Stewart.

Cute little Knitted Snowmen Ornaments from Flutter By Patch.   These are soooo cute!  I just may have found my grandchildren's Christmas ornie for this year!

This one is pretty cute too!  (I know a litte girl who might like this.)  A free pattern from Alan Dart.

I am reading ...

The Sister, by Louise Jensen
Grace hasn't been the same since the death of her best friend Charlie. She is haunted by Charlie's last words, and in a bid for answers, opens an old memory box of Charlie's. It soon becomes clear there was a lot she didn't know about her best friend.

When Grace starts a campaign to find Charlie's father, Anna, a girl claiming to be Charlie's sister steps forward. For Grace, finding Anna is like finding a new family, and soon Anna has made herself very comfortable in Grace and boyfriend Dan's home.

But something isn't right. Things disappear, Dan's acting strangely and Grace is sure that someone is following her. Is it all in Grace's mind? Or as she gets closer to discovering the truth about both Charlie and Anna, is Grace in terrible danger?

I do so LOVE a good mystery!

I am looking forward to ...
Maybe going into town and doing some window shopping tomorrow.  Todd doesn't get the idea that you can look and not buy.  He goes, gets exactly what he wants, and then leaves.  I like to browse and liking something doesn't mean that I will buy it.  I think perhaps  men and women are different in that way.  What do you think?

I am learning to ...
Use my new phone.  It's a learning curve, but I think I am coming to terms with it!

Dreaming about ...

A pretty roof over the front door  . . .

Love this . . .  minus the leather couch.  I like a fabric couch.

A favourite quote for the day  . . .

Makes me smile ...

This photo of my son in law Tom, with Maryn when she was a wee baby makes me smile.  Tom looks so happy.  Tom is the perfect son in law.  I don't know him very well, but what I do know of him makes me feel happy.  He is a great husband to my daughter and a great father to Maryn and Cameron.  He is kind and gentle and he brings out the best in my daughter.  He loves the bones off her which is very obvious.   Nobody could want more for a daughter of theirs than for them to have a husband like Tom.

One of my favourite things  ...

S'mores!  I found this kit for them at B&M.  We have a fire pit.  I am going to drag Todd out there some evening and we will make s'mores!  It's a plan.

Corners of my kingdom ...

  1. Good morning Marie. It has taken a number of times to reach this spot today. Thank you for the little critters. If I start now I might have enough to give to my knitting group for Christmas. I wanted something small and knitty and there it was!

I thank you also for the chicken dish. We are having leftovers tonight and since mum doesn't like chicken it is very difficult to please her. I think my plan has changed and I may well have everything needed in the pantry but avocado. time to whine again. They grow avocados so close to my home and charge a fortune for them. Oh well they are one of God's butters as we say.

Pip is practicing for her musical. She has been having trouble with Ave Maria. We are not roman catholic so sha hasn't really heard it. Granny wants to her to sing it operatically and she must time etc to the director's rule. When she concentrates she is doing well as it really is the top end of her alto range.

God bless your day witl love and warmth. Our winter ends soon and i know I am not ready. We haven't had many cooler days and I would like some.

  4. My DDH never went shopping except to get new shoes. I did all his shopping for him. Men as a rule don't like to shop, but some of my sons take after their mom and love it...window shopping is good ! I have a huge zucchini just waiting to be cooked. I'll have to check out the gratin recipe.

  5. Thanks Monique! I am always grateful I think, but this is my favourite time of year! I love the autumn! I love to look in shop windows. You are right, you can get some great ideas. It is nice to dream and wish. I find that when I have no money I can always see things I want to buy, but when I do, I can't bear to part with my money. I guess I am an enigma! xoxo

You will love the gratin recipe I think Pam! Oftimes instead of cream I will use evaporated skim milk. You get the same richness without the fat and calories! Have a lovely Tuesday! xoxo

  6. I do hope that you get your wander around Chester it is such a nice were city. I do think men are different from women as regards shopping, I know Peter is like your Todd, he just will not go into shops etc. I am a bit like Todd as I rarely go browsing, if I want something I just go and get it, no dithering around .... But there are times I like to window shop. A few weeks ago we went to the wonderful Countryfile show and although I enjoyed it it would have been so much better if we could just have browsed amongst the many many craft stalls, but that is not Peters....thing....and because of this we missed seeing quite a lot...another thing I have found with men..especially Peter is that they will never admit to being lost...will never stop and ask for directions, what is it with them LOL.........Been a lovely day down here have just come in from sitting out since 6.30 getting cooler now that the sun has gone, soon it will be getting dark, is it my imagination or is it getting dark earlier this year ?......hope your day has been a lovely one xxxx

Sleep...why is it that it seems so easy, a,d is so difficult!? I'm glad you got a few zzzzzz's!

I love all of your fun ideas, some that really made me smile!! I love zucchini, and can hardly wait to try your recipe, it looks delicious. The flowers in the window sill, something fu, to crochet and a good mystery...what else could a girl ask for? Thanks for the yummy recipes, and the fun links!!

  8. I know Sybil, what is it about men and asking for directions? Todd is the same, also if something is not working, instead of calling the appropriate people (Like for instance the internet, etc.) He will fiddle around with every connection first. Its like he doesn't want to call anyone. I think men really ARE from Mars! haha I have noticed the days really beginning to draw in this year. It feels earlier for some reason than any other year, but maybe I am just more aware of it for some reason. Love and hugs, xoxo

Thanks Barb! Glad you enjoyed! Hope your week is a great one. Love and huga back! xoxo

Your comments mean the world to me, and while I may not be able to address each one individually, each one is important to me and each one counts. Thanks so much!
