The Simple Woman's Daybook . . .

FOR TODAY, February 21, 2023  HAPPY PANCAKE DAY!

Outside my window...
The snow is all but gone. It was incredibly mild yesterday. I went across to my friend Glenna's to help her with her TV and her bulbs are up. This has been the weirdest winter ever. Not that I am complaining.

I am thinking...
I am thinking about March. Will it come in like a lamb or a lion?  We shall see!

I am thankful for...
Where do I start? My life is one big miracle. I am here for a reason. I am not sure what that reason is, but I am still here, when many others are not. I try to find the blessings held in each day.

In the kitchen...

One Pot Creamy Broccoli Pasta. One pan to clean up. No fuss. No muss. Delicious.

On my "to Cook" list ...

Home Based Mom. Oatmeal Lemon Cookies. Look and sound delicious!

Abide With Me, by Elizabeth Strout. Katherine is only five-years-old. Struck dumb with grief at her mother's death, it is down to her father, the heartbroken minister Tyler Caskey, to bring his daughter out of silence she has observed in the wake of the family's tragedy.

But Tyler Caskey is barely surviving himself. His cold, church-assigned home is colder still since Lauren's death, and he struggles to find the right words for his sermons; struggles to be a leader to his congregation when he himself is lost.

When Katherine's schoolteacher calls to discuss his daughter's anti-social behaviour, it sparks a chain of events that begins to tear down Tyler's defences. The small-town rumour-mill has much to make of Katherine's odd behaviour, and even more to say about Tyler's relationship with his housekeeper, Connie Hatch. And in Tyler's darkest hour, a startling discovery will test his congregation's humanity - and his own will to endure the kinds of trials that sooner or later test us all.

From the Orange Prize-shortlisted author of Amy & Isabelle, this is a startlingly beautiful novel about love and abandonment, faith and hypocrisy; and the peril of family secrets…

This is very good!   I am really enjoying it.

I am looking forward to ...

The Simple Woman's Daybook . . .

FOR TODAY, February 14th, 2023

Outside my window ...
Its just getting light out. Dull and grey. Small piles of dirty snow, -3*F. This has been the weirdest winter. With temperatures swinging back and forth and lots of rain, very little snow. I'm not complaining. I just hope we don't get all of our winter's snow dumped on us in March! Its been known to happen!

I am thinking ...
Had a lovely facetime yesterday with my friend Jo in the UK. We talked for almost 2 hours and the time just flew by. I love that I still have this contact with my good friends that I made when I lived over there. Of course Jo and I both worked at the Manor. I have always considered our friendship to be one of the best things that came out of that experience. Love her and her husband Colin to bits. It was so nice to get to spend that time with her yesterday.

I am thankful for ...
It may seem boring to some, but here I go. Faith. Family. Friends. Home. Health. KitKats. My ability to provide a living for myself. I am blessed.

In the kitchen ...

Nothing fancy today, just some pretty darned delicious BBQ Chicken BLT Burgers with some crispy Sweet Potato Wedges on the side. Sized for two.

On my "To Cook" list ...

Six Sisters.  Low Fat Tex Mex Chicken Casserole. Love everything about this.

THE LIGHT IN THE DARK, A winter journal, by Horatio Clare

As November stubs out the glow of autumn and the days tighten into shorter hours, winter’s occupation begins. Preparing for winter has its own rhythms, as old as our exchanges with the land. Of all the seasons, it draws us together.

But winter can be tough. It is a time of introspection, of looking inwards. Seasonal sadness; winter blues; depression—such feelings are widespread in the darker months. But by looking outwards, by being in and observing nature, we can appreciate its rhythms.

Mountains make sense in any weather. The voices of a wood always speak consolation. A brush of frost; subtle colors; days as bright as a magpie’s cackle. We can learn to see and celebrate winter in all its shadows and lights. In this moving and lyrical evocation of a British winter and the feelings it inspires, Horatio Clare raises a torch against the darkness, illuminating the blackest corners of the season, and delving into memory and myth to explore the powerful hold that winter has on us.

By learning to see, we can find the magic, the light that burns bright at the heart of winter: spring will come again.

It is an easy read.

I am looking forward to ...

Spring.  Isn't everyone?

The Simple Woman's Daybook ...

FOR TODAY, January 10th, 2023

Outside my window...
Its dark and there has been a light dusting of snow. Its below zero, so cold. But as a whole Winter has been very kind to us this year.

I am thinking...
I was reading this morning about a man here in Nova Scotia whose wife died in the waiting room of an ER here in NS after waiting for 7 Hours to be seen. She was not an old woman either. Only 37. This shouldn't happen. I have read of other people laying in their driveway for hours waiting for an ambulance. Our government needs to wake up and do something.

I am thankful for...
That I am reasonably healthy. That I have a roof over my head. Food in my belly. Family who loves me. I am incredibly blessed.

In the kitchen...

Parmesan Roasted Potatoes. Crispy cheese on the bottoms, meltingly tender inside. Filled with flavor. Delicious.

On my "To Cook" list...

Harvest and Nourish. Rosemary Parmesan Artisan Bread.

I am wearing...
One of my flannel nighties. They are just so comfortable and warm. When I can afford to, I am going to buy another one.

Good to know ...

I am going to try this.

I am wanting to create ...

Your Crochet. An assortment of chicken related pot holders. Free, five different ones.

The Crochet Fox.  HennyPenny Crochet Basket.

Craft Evangelist. Square Baskets.

Yarn and Hooks. Crochet Clutch bag with zipper.

Sweet Crocheterie on Etsy. PDF pattern.

I am reading ...

The Four Winds, Kristin Hannah

Texas, 1934. Millions are out of work and a drought has broken the Great Plains. Farmers are fighting to keep their land and their livelihoods as the crops are failing, the water is drying up, and dust threatens to bury them all. One of the darkest periods of the Great Depression, the Dust Bowl era, has arrived with a vengeance.

In this uncertain and dangerous time, Elsa Martinelli—like so many of her neighbors—must make an agonizing choice: fight for the land she loves or go west, to California, in search of a better life. The Four Winds is an indelible portrait of America and the American Dream, as seen through the eyes of one indomitable woman whose courage and sacrifice will come to define a generation.

I have just started this book, but I am hooked.

Looking forward to...
The next episode of The Chosen. I watched the latest episode last night and it was brilliant. If you haven't watched the series yet, I highly recommend. It is so well done.  You don't have to be religious to enjoy it.
