Five more things about me . . . .

I thought it would be fun to do another five things about me.   I am really enjoying this process of self  examination and discovery.  That can often be a good thing in many ways.   So here we go . .  .

When I choose to become your friend, I become your friend for life.   I am not a fair weather friend, but an all time friend.  I will stick with you through the good and the bad and everything in between.  I am loyal and I am caring.  I am the type of person that will do just about anything for anyone, but even more so for a friend.     I have friends in my life which I have known and loved since I was in primary school.   I have other friends which I have only known and loved for a few years now.  I have friends which I know and love whom I have never ever met in person, but I value them every bit as much as the ones I have met in person.  Friendship is a bond of the heart.   Spirit which recognizes in another that same spirit . . . that special kinship . . .  that person you call home.  Family you get to choose for yourself.  I like that.  We may not get to talk every day, but when we do . . . it's as if we have never stopped talking.  Know what I mean?  I was thrilled this past year to have found a very old friend whom I had thought I had lost contact with.  We were both thrilled actually.  And when we were finally able to speak again, it was as if no time at all had passed in between.  Friendship is a wonderful thing.

This is a photograph I took of some trees around Lake Ullswater when we were up in Cumbria in 2008.  I love trees.  When I was a child I believed that if you hugged a tree really close, you could hear it's heart beating.  I still believe this.   Trees are wonderful things.   They change their looks from one season to the next, and there is beauty in each of the changes Each has a bark which is as distinctive as a fingerprint.    They have different looks.  Some can be very welcoming and yet others somewhat menacing.  When I was a girl there was a fir tree in the front garden of a house which we lived in for a couple of years.  We used to be able to jump over the tree.   A couple years ago I drove past that same house and the tree is now taller than the house.  It was amazing.   There was also a weeping willow at that house with long branches which reached to the ground.  I can remember sitting beneath it's branches on hot summer days and it was like sitting in a tent of leaves.  A magical, wonderful tent of leaves.  I get upset when I see a tree which someone has harmed.  I think to myself "What idiots have done this!"  He who could maliciously harm any living thing has no heart.  (Except for wasps and flies.   I hate them.

I really want to visit Paris.  It is my dream to spend a weekend there with Todd sometime.  To travel over on the Eurostar and then just explore Paris on foot.   I was there once when I was a very young girl. I was only four and a half years old.  My mother has a very blurry picture of me in front of the Eiffel Tower.  It was a very foggy day in November and we were on our way back to Canada after having lived in Germany for a while.  In any case I have no memories of it.   We have been to De Gaulle airport on our way down to the Dordogne (a holiday which I loved), but that is not like being in Paris.  I want to explore all of it's nooks and crannies. I want to sit at an outdoor cafe and watch the world walking by.   I want to experience Paris with the one I love and see it through each other's eyes.  To taste the food . . . to hear the sounds . . .  to smell the smells, and hopefully one day I will while I am still young enough to be able to move around!

I have always wanted to live on a farm.   I love farms and the farming way of life.   I know that it is hard work.  My first husband came from a farming family.  In fact they owned three farms when I married him.  They had fruit orchards and they had battery hens (ugh!) and they had dairy cows and they had sheep.   They rented their fields in the summer to a local cannery and grew a variety of vegetables for them.  Their days were long and filled with work, but they also were very happy with this work.  I have picked apples and graded eggs.  I have helped chase down cows which have gotten out of the pasture in the middle of the night.   I think much of the appeal of that first marriage was in the farming way of life.   My first mother in law was a great cook and craftswoman.  She made beautiful hooked rugs from rags.   She sewed and quilted beautiful quilts.  She loved growing flowers and she had her own little vegetable garden.  She could make a beautiful meal out of anything.  I loved being in their home and on their farm.  I learned a lot from my first mother in law.   She is up in her nineties now and still lives in her own little house.  She's been a widow for 39 years now and never remarried.  I have a lot of respect for her, and still look up to her in many ways.  We are a part and parcel of all of our experiences and of all the people who touch our lives in a variety of ways.  I love the parts of me that came from having been around her and having lived on that farm for however short a time it was.

Intellectually I know there is no such thing, but my heart believes in fairies.   My heart believes in a tiny magical world that runs parallel to ours.  A world which is minuscule and where butterflies can talk and flowers dance.  A world where toadstools become little brown houses, and where magic lies beneath each leaf and flower.  A world where the bluebells tinkle as you walk past and the laughter of a million tiny voices is carried in the wind.  In that film Peter Pan, near the end when Tinker Bell is dying and we were told to shout out loud . . .  "I believe in Fairies!" . . .  I shouted it louder than anyone else and I believed every word.   A part of me still does.  I hope I never lose that part of my soul . . .  the fairy believing part . . .  even if my mind tells me otherwise.

And there you have it.  Another five things about me.   I quite enjoyed this and I want a house like that fairy house, don't you?   I have a busy day ahead of me today.  My visiting teachers are coming this afternoon and I have a meeting after that, so I best get on with it.

A thought to carry with you through today . . .

  5. Hi, Marie: this is enlightening and enjoyable, learning more about who you are! As for fairies (and dollhouses), I refuse to outgrow my attraction to and fondness for them so long as I have a mind that can imagine all sorts of goings-on in those wee worlds! I recently was the lucky winner of a giveaway at Morning Musings (http://cathy-morningmusings.blogspot.com/2014/05/whimsy.html#more)- the book, Fairyopolis, by Cicely Mary Barker. It is such a fun 'journal' of the author's 'close encounters' with the fairies. A always, thank you for sharing.
