FOR TODAY, July 28th, 2015

Outside my window ...
It's dull and overcast.  And quite chilly.  Where has summer gone??

I am thinking ...
Meeting up with a friend at her church ladies' group today.   It is a strawberry luncheon and they will be sharing crafts.   A bit nervous about going as I have never met any of them except for my friend.

I am thankful for ...
Having a Todd and a Mitzie in my life, as well as the Gospel.   Life is good.

In the kitchen ...

I have several of these that my mother made.  The tops are crocheted or knitted instead of sewn.  I love these for drying my wet hands on in the kitchen.   You can find a complete tutorial on Kleios Belly.

If you like working with felt, you will love this Christmas Penny Rug.  I have actually made this one.  I had it finished in time for Christmas last year.  Simple and fun to do.   From Cath's Pennies Designs.   She has patterns for just about every season and holiday!

I love these people painted rocks.   Such a simple idea and so much fun.   Kids could play with them on long trips, matching different bodies with different heads, etc.

The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, by Muriel Spark
I had seen the film a long time ago but never read the book it was based on.

In 1930s Edinburgh, six ten-year-old girls, Sandy, Rose, Mary, Jenny, Monica, and Eunice are assigned Miss Jean Brodie, who describes herself as being "in my prime," as their teacher. Miss Brodie, determined that they shall receive an education in the original sense of the Latin verb educere, "to lead out," gives her students lessons about her personal love life and travels, promoting art history, classical studies, and fascism. Under her mentorship, these six girls whom Brodie singles out as the elite group among her students—known as the "Brodie set"—begin to stand out from the rest of the school. However in one of the novel's typical flash-forwards we learn that one of them will later betray Brodie, ruining her teaching career, but that she will never learn which.

This novel takes these same girls through to age 17.  Fascinating read.

I am hoping ...

With this next season of Downton Abby being it's last and the cancellation of The Starlings, I am hoping that Brendon Coyle will soon be on our screens as another character.   He's one of my favourite actors.

Makes me smile ...
Knock Knock Jokes.  I heard a good one yesterday . . .

An indoor treehouse . . .

I am pondering ...
Todd did not sleep all night last night.  I had a hard time falling asleep, so I went in the other room to read and fell asleep there.  When I got up I went into our room to get my glasses and he was sitting up awake reading.  He had not slept all night.  I told him to try again.  I wonder why this happens to us every now and again?  I hate it when it does.

  2. Hi, Marie! Oh, what fun with your Strawberry Luncheon and crafts today--ENJOY!! It's been a cooler summer here too, and now we're in a bit of a rainy period having been mostly and unusually dry summer so far--a strange summer. Last week I had corduroy trousers and a jumper on! LOVE the pretty-topped kitchen towels! I want to make some of these. And I think I'll make for my sister too, who is is moving house this week--a nice house-warming giftie! While I've not been following along with Downton Abbey all along, I do LOVE Brendan Coyle!! Anything he's in, I want to see! ;o) Oh, that She Shed is GORGEOUS!! I want one... LOL! Woman's answer to the Man Cave--YES!! Or a Gypsy Caravan--would love one of those bright-colored hideaways. Hope Todd will find some better rest soon--not good with no sleeping. :o/ ((LOVE & HUGS))

  4. Hi Marie, enjoy your strawberry luncheon. I'm sure there's nothing to be nervous about and you'll make new friends. Poor Todd! I am a terrible insomniac myself so know what it's like. I have now given in though and resorted to sleeping tablets from the docs. I was reluctant at first but they have really helped. Lots of love xxx

  5. The strawberry lunch sounds wonderful. You should fit right in since there are going to be crafts involved. If you wonder where summer went, it is here. We are going to be the hottest we've been so far this year. I'm doing all I can to keep cool. I hope your Tuesday is terrific !

Thanks Kate! Our Docs here are very reluctant to give out sleeping tablets. Probably a good thing. xoxo

Thanks Pam!The weather seems to be crazy all over the world I think. You can't rely on anything anymore! xoxo

Thanks Monique. I will try to find a pic of my felt craft and send it to you so you can see! I knew you would like the rocks. xoxo

  9. Those piano keys! :) And I love that little kitchen too. I wish I'd taken so many more pictures inside my grandparents' house, but I could have a thousand and would wish for more. I don't have a single one of their pantry, and that always makes me sad. It was a tiny (tiny!) little side-room off their kitchen, just beadboard-type wall cupboards from floor-t-ceiling on one side, a window on the third wall, and the Hoosier cabinet/hutch on the third wall. The picture you shared reminds me of the simplicity of their kitchen: It didn't have cupboards or counters, so the pull-out surface of that old pantry Hoosier and the kitchen table served as the only work-spaces. Only three chairs fit at the table, although we somehow squeezed four there the times one of my brothers and I would stay with them in the summer and eat lunch with them. I'm going to make myself cry as I think about it! I can smell it even now. What is it with kitchens! More than any other room, they just steal and break my heart, so many sweet memories. ♥

I hope you two sleep better tonight.

  10. You always have a fun Daybook entry. You do come up with the cutest ideas. I am now looking for inexpensive Birthday and Christmas gifts since my husband is retiring and I won't have as much freedom with funds. There were some unique ideas here.
I really loved the painted rocks; such a cute idea.
Your book looks interesting. Wow, there will be a lot of people unhappy about Downton Abby having it's last season.
I liked the Mindfulness thought; I will have to ponder on that one.
Now the Woman's answer to a Man Cave; is way cute.
Thanks again for brightening my day. I hope the two of you have been sleeping better. I hate it when I don't get a good nights sleep.
    Sending hugs your way!
