The Simple Woman's Day Book

FOR TODAY, October 14th, 2014

Outside my window ...
All is calm.  All is dark ... I can se the lounge light on in the house across the way, so I know I'm not the only one who gets up so early in the morning. ☺

I am thinking ...
Had a lovely facetime with my middle son again yesterday.   He is a lovely man.   How did I get so blessed to have such a lovely man for a son.   He seems very tender.   I am thinking I need to make an extra special effort to get through to him that I love him very much.

I am thankful ...
See above, and for the loving God of second chances.

In the kitchen ...

Delicious Marmalade Muffins!

On my "To Cook" list ...

Hot Chocolate on a Stick from Cookies and Cups.   This is so cute and looks like it would be a fabulous little gift to share with some fabulous ladies I know.  Maybe for Christmas I could dab the tops in crushed candy canes!

I am creating ...

Bunny almost done . . .  I love Alicia Paulson's Patterns.  I confess I have all of her softie patterns.  I was so blessed earlier this year to receive a lovely handmade ornament from one of her patterns made by my dear Monique.  Such a treasure.

I have this pattern for these ornaments too and will be working on them next.   So sweet.   Alicia's work is amazing.

I remember doing little wreath ornaments like this yonks ago.  I think I'll do some more this year.   from Planet June.

I want a Magic Wand.   From Heartmade.

Loving the Three Little Kittens.   From Cat and the Fiddle.

I am going ...
I have a Dentist's appointment tomorrow.   Praise God for NHS Dentists.  It doesn't cost me anything.  What a blessing, and I have a sore tooth too.  I think I have a cracked filling.  If it wasn't for the NHS, I would have to just suffer.

Saturday night Todd and I are going to a Murder Mystery Dinner, courtesy of some friends.  They had to drop out and have offered us their places, all prepaid for.   I have long wanted to go on one of these, but we could never afford to go.   God is good.

Friday afternoon I have a meeting with people who share my PR calling with me for the church.   We are going to sort a few things out.

I am reading ...

Daughter, by Jane Shemilt
‘Naomi never thought she would need luck. She thought she had been born lucky. I thought she had been too; I thought we all had been. Only a year ago, I thought we had everything. It’s hard to see exactly where it began to change. I go back, over and over again, to different points in time, to work out where I could have altered fate.’

The disappearance of a child is every parent’s nightmare, but when the child is a teenager the situation becomes more complicated. Dramatic lines of inquiry – Have they been abducted? Are they being held hostage? Are they still alive? – eventually make way for more soul-searching questions. Could they have left of their own accord? Was something badly wrong at home? Was it our fault? When 15-year-old Naomi Malcolm vanishes from her middle-class home without trace, these are precisely the uncomfortable questions that her parents agonise over. Her mother Jenny, who narrates this utterly gripping story, gradually discovers that the daughter she thought she knew so well was actually a different girl. And, as the police investigation proceeds, she learns that the rest of the family, including her husband, have secrets, too. The effects on all concerned are overwhelming. The result is a tautly coiled spring of suspicion and suspense which builds to a devastating ending. It is a beautifully crafted novel which combines the search for Naomi with reflections on motherhood, marriage, guilt and family dynamic.

I am about halfway through this and it's a cracking read thus far.

I am hoping ...
That Mitzie doesn't get sick again for a long time and that my good friend Sybil has a lovely holiday in China.

Makes me smile ...

Baby Penguins make me smile.   They're so adorable.   Well, baby anything is adorable, even rose buds.  I reckon that God did that on purpose so we would always be compelled to take care of them.  Their cuteness is like a form of protection I think.

I am learning ...
That the more I think I know, the less I really know.

Around the house ...

Things you can do with an old window from Funky Junk Interiors.  I wish I could find an old window to use.   Some of these are really nice.  I am loving the coffee table idea!

I just adore what this gal has done with an old dresser.  I think it's just gorgeous.   People are so inventive.  From Freddy and Petunia.

Now that's a colour I could quite happily live with in my kitchen.   Pale blue/grey.  Love the wooden knobs and the floor as well.  Nice nice.   From House to Home.

It may seem a bit out of character for me, but I kinda really like this.  Its very modern retro if you know what I mean.  Love the colours, and that leafy wall paper.  Again from House to Home.

I am pondering ...
There is much that has been written to discredit Joseph Smith. Many people seeking answers will go to these false sources. Elder Neil Andersen taught us during our last General Conference why God allows for this opposition to do such harm. He said, “Opposition against the things of God send seekers of truth to their knees for answers.” When you really want to know something, fall on your knees. Let the spirit tell you.  If you would like to listen to or watch the brilliant talk he gave on this click here.  It reminds me of a scripture which helped to get me though the first year after I separated from my ex husband.

"For it must needs be, that there is an opposition in all things. If not so, my firstborn in the wilderness, righteousness could not be brought to pass, neither wickedness, neither holiness nor misery, neither good nor bad."  2 Nephi 12:11

The fact that I can plant a seed
and it becomes a flower,
share a bit of knowledge
and it becomes another's,
smile at someone
and receive a smile in return,
are to me continual spiritual exercises.
 ~Leo Buscaglia

I have always loved Leo Buscaglia's writings.

One of my favourite things ...

Greengate anything.   Ceramics.  Linens.  Anything.

A peek into my day ...

This is me watching the telly most nights.  Yep . . .  I only ever watch the first half of most things after about eight o'clock at night.   I never get to see how anything ends . . .   thank goodness most of what we watched is taped ahead of time (we hate commercials) and I can rewind. ☺

And that's my day book for this week!

  1. Good morning Marie. Have the happiest day you can and best wishes for the dentist. My teeth are shocking and dentistry costs the earth.

I love the dresser too. I have also love the ice skate ornament for the longest time. Beth had a glass one made for me while she was at school in Switzerland. Honesty that girl has seen so much of the world considering our income is scant.

Love you to bits. Just thought you would like to know.

  4. You are fortunate that you have dental care. I lost a filling last month and have been putting off going to the dentist due to the high cost. I'll have to do it, but am hoping to get by till after Christmas. I wish that Sybil still did her blog. It would be wonderful to hear about that trip to China. She does have some exciting travels. Hope you have a terrific Tuesday!

Pam, I think Sybil is amazing. She takes the most amazing trips. I've had e-mails from her since she landed in China and so far she's having a great time! You have a terrific Tuesday too. I hope you can hold off on your tooth without any undue discomfort until you can afford to go! xxoo

  10. So glad Mitzie Doodle is well once again. Hope she stays that way. That's good you are getting your dental work done. I need to go too. As I get older, I cringe when I have to go. Loved everything you posted. I have some very old windows that I purchased a couple years ago for $5.00 each. I have yet to use them. Wish we lived closer and I could give you one of mine.
    Thanks for the soothing music!
