Five Things About Me . . .

 photo 198005_10150170631100320_7919578_n_zps43f4cc8b.jpg

Thursday means five things about me.     I haven't run out of things to tell you, so I am hoping you haven't run out of the desire to read them.  ☺

This a photograph of me holding my eldest son when he was about 18 months old.   He's 39 now, so it's a very old photograph.  I love all of my children very much.  I know I live a great distance from them now, but it wasn't really supposed to be that way.  When I moved over here it was only supposed to be for a couple of years, until Todd was pensioned off and then the plan was to move back to Canada.  Then 9/11 happened and it became a lot harder for people to immigrate to Canada, especially if you were a man over the age of 65 and not deemed employable . . .  and so we stayed here.  I believe in making the best out of any situation.   I have a good life and a wonderful husband.  For whatever reason, here is where I must be and I accept that.  I do miss my children however.  Thank goodness for modern technology.  There are a few rifts however . . .  which are next to impossible to heal with me being over here.  I pray every day for a way in which I could accomplish this.

I saw the film "The Trouble with Angels," starring Haley Mills when I was about 16 or 17  I guess.   After seeing it, I decided I wanted to be a Nun.   I didn't realize that you had to be catholic to be a nun.  I was a protestant.  I am not sure why I thought I could be one.   I am not even sure I remember the motivation behind the desire, unless it was because Haley Mills made it look so desirable in the film.   I know that I loved the Lord and I wanted to be a good person and perhaps I thought being a Nun made you a good person?  I don't know.  The desire did not last long however.   I wanted to be a wife and mother more.

I love door knobs and door knockers.  I have always had a fascination for them, and especially for glass door knobs.   In the manor most of the doors had glass door knobs.  I think this green one is especially pretty  . . .

But I also love LOVE this door knob from the SL Temple . . .  with it's beehive and symbolism.  It's inviting.   I think the first thing anyone sees before they enter a house is your front door and the door knob on it.   We don't have one on ours.   Apparently we are set up to get all new windows and new doors, but who knows for sure when that will happen.  I hope our new door has a door knob.  ☺

I am a traditionalist with old fashioned values and desires.  I embrace modern technology, but I could quite happily live in a big old farm house surrounded by the old and careworn.  I do not like ultra modern anything.    I love old films.  I love old television shows.  I love old furniture.  I love old everything.

This picture makes me happy.   I think I was born twenty years too late, which means I probably would have been dead by now . . .

I love words.  As a child I used to read the dictionary.   Loving words does not mean I am good at word games.  I am hopeless at playing scrabble.  My brain doesn't seem to want to unscramble letters, but I love to look at words and read about them . . .  learn what they mean.  Discover new ones, etc.  I am a Logophile  . . .  which means a lover of words.

I have an incredible sense of direction.   I can find my way out of most places.  I only have to go somewhere once and I remember how to get there and how to get back.  I am like a Human Sat Nav.  but only after having already been someplace.   I cannot find places I have never been.  Now that would be incredibly incredible don't you think!  Awesome!

I would be completely happy if that is all anybody had to say about me after I was dead and buried.  "She was kind."  In fact I hope they put that on my tombstone.   "She was kind."  That is probably the most beautiful quality a person can develop in themselves.  Kindness.

And that's it for this week.

A thought to carry with you through today  . . .

To those who see with loving eyes,
life is beautiful.
To those who speak with tender
voices, life is peaceful.
To those who help with gentle hands,
life is full.
And to those
who care with compassionate hearts,
life is good beyond all measure."

Cooking in The English Kitchen today  . . .  Caramel Popcorn.   It's delicious!

I am greatly saddened by what has happened in Ottawa yesterday and a couple of days before.   It breaks my heart to know that my homeland has been touched by the evil fingers of extremism.  My thoughts and prayers to all those affected.   Thankfully my brother and his family were all safe.  That was a blessing.  Everytime something like this happens our world changes.   I do not like what it is becoming, which makes me cling to my faith all the more.  It is the one constant in an ever changing world of chaos.

May your Thursday be one which is blessed in some way!

  1. Good morning Marie. I woke to the Canadian news and my blood ran cold. I pray this outrageous behaviour stops.

You were a very young mum and I am sorry that circumstances have kept you away from home.

    God bless your day.

I have NO sense of direction and could get lost in a phone booth.
I have spent 40 yrs living outside of a big city and know only my country roads for comfort.Jacques drives me everywhere in the city.
I am flabbergasted you cannot come back..you ARE Canadian..That is quite surprising..

  4. I was just nineteen when I had my eldest son Suzan. I turned 20 about 4 months after he was born. I was a young mum, but I was a happy mum! I adored him and still do. ☺ xxoo

Monique, I treasure the few photos I have. People didn't take many photos I think because of the cost of developing them. I am a country girl at heart myself. I loved living in the country always have done. I can come back Monique, but my husband can not. He can only visit for at most 6 months a year. It is impossible to maintain homes in both places, so we have to choose. We have many more benefits here. I am still in shock over the latest news. xxoo

  5. Marie: Do you follow Ash Tree Cottage blog? If not, you need to check out her last two posts about a friend's dollhouse! I have never seen anything like it. I thought of you as soon as I saw them.

Your comments mean the world to me, and while I may not be able to address each one individually, each one is important to me and each one counts. Thanks so much!
