The Simple Woman's Daybook . . .

 FOR TODAY, July 28th, 2020

Outside my window...
The sun is shining sorta, but my dining room window is spattered with rain. It is breezy and cold. Too cold for July.

I am thinking ...
How did we get to the end of July already? 2020 is flying by even faster than 2019 did, but then again maybe that is a good thing?  Yesterday I was supposed to have a Dentist appointment. It was bucketing down rain.  The appointment had been made in January. I said to Todd I'm not walking halfway across Blacon, struggling in the rain. So I called them and was told they are not honoring any appointments except for emergencies. That was good in a way because I really felt uncomfortable about going, but then I thought, what if I had just gone. In the pouring rain, with my arthritis, walking so far just to find this out. Surely all of their patients should have been notified that no appointments were going to be honored until we heard from them again to set up new ones?????

I am thankful for ...
The quiet of early morning. These couple of hours on my own to think, to write, to plan.

In the Kitchen ...

Martha Stewart's One Pan Pasta, downsized to feed only two. This was lush, cooks in 9 minutes and with only 8 ingredients including the water. Pasta, cherry tomatoes, olive oil, onion, garlic, red pepper flakes, basil and water.

On my "To Cook" list ...

Souhern Bite.  Sweet Corn Spoon Bread.  I'm a sucker for anything cornbread!

Good to know ...

 Clean Mama. How to.

I am creating ...

I finished my needlecase from a pattern I got on Etsy. The shop was Elefantz.  I found the instructions a tiny bit vague. You definitely need to be a sewer.

A spoonful of sugar.  Matchbox needle book.  Tutorial, free.

Nana and Co.  My all time favourite Needlebook tutorial. Free.

Ann Wood.  Another favourite.  Scrappy and free.

The Sewing Directory.  Free tutorial for this cute sewing case.

I am reading ...

American Royals, by Katharine McGee
What if America had a royal family?

Two princesses vying for the ultimate crown. Two girls vying for the prince's heart. This is the story of the American royals. When America won the Revolutionary War, its people offered General George Washington a crown. Two and a half centuries later, the House of Washington still sits on the throne.

Like most royal families, the Washingtons have an heir and a spare. A future monarch and a backup battery. Each child knows exactly what is expected of them. But these aren't just any royals. They're American.

As Princess Beatrice gets closer to becoming America's first queen regnant, the duty she has embraced her entire life suddenly feels stifling. Nobody cares about the spare except when she's breaking the rules, so Princess Samantha doesn't care much about anything, either . . . except the one boy who is distinctly off-limits to her.

And then there's Samantha's twin, Prince Jefferson. If he'd been born a generation earlier, he would have stood first in line for the throne, but the new laws of succession make him third. Most of America adores their devastatingly handsome prince . . . but two very different girls are vying to capture his heart.

The duty. The intrigue. The Crown. New York Times bestselling author Katharine McGee imagines an alternate version of the modern world, one where the glittering age of monarchies has not yet faded--and where love is still powerful enough to change the course of history.

Just a bit of fun.

  1. I think you might consider another dentist dearie...one that knows how to use the email system!! Unbelievable in this day and time!! Shows no regard for the patient. We have had an awful time finding a good dentist in our area...the one we had left and no one bothered to tell us...we showed up. Hubby went ahead with dentist who was there...I did not. There are some things that destroy trust. Those tomatoes...oh my what I would give for one of those again!!

    1. I am just glad that I thought to call before I actually went out and about. I might have caught a chill walking in the pouring rain and wind! Aren't those tomatoes lovely? I adore fresh tomatoes Elizabeth! xoxo

  2. I have made that pasta recipe for years I just do not put in onions.
I heard from my dentist I have to go in in sept. In the mean time I am taking very good care of these old teeth.

  3. Your Simple Woman's Daybook is lovely. Love the little needlecase you made. You have so many talents, Marie. The little cottage one is sweet, too. And can those tomatoes get any redder? We had lovely bacon and tomato sandwiches with a cob of corn for dinner last night. So easy and so delicious. I'm sorry your weather has been so unseasonable for you. We are still in this heatwave and I must admit it is getting a little tiresome. Bring on fall! Martha's one dish pasta looks good. I make something similar I call summer pasta. I use tomatoes from the garden, any and all herbs from the garden, cucumber, zuchinni, a bit of garlic and olive oil and lemon juice. It's pretty tasty. Hugs and love, Elaine

    1. Thanks very much Elaine. I remember getting very excellent corn on the cob when we lived in Georgetown! It was soooo good. I miss good corn on the cob over here in the UK. It is pretty much non-existant! Your summer pasta sounds lovely! Love and hugs, xoxo

    1. I am not a huge fan of vague either. If anything when I am trying to explain/show something I go too far in the other direction. I can be quite wordy I know! Grace is such a beautiful little girl. I hope your temps drop some soon. I hate it when its really hot! xoxo

  5. I've had my fresh sweet corn for the summer and ripe red tomatoes, so tasty. But I really like the quote you ended with today and have copied it down to use in the future. Disappointing about the dentist but a relief too you didn't have to go out. Sometimes we just have to count our blessings.

  6. Wow, not run to be cold in July. I agree that 2020 is flying by. I am happy you didn't walk all the way to the appointment; that would have been the pits. The sweet Corn Bread Spoon would be one I will look at. My husband loves corn bread. All the sewing projects are very cute. The book does sound like a fun one. I do love those kinds of stories.
Loved the photo of the Geese. We have a canal across from us and we have Geese around a lot.
We have corn growing in our garden and can't wait until it is ready. We also have tomatoes that are almost ripe.
That little two year old is adorable and the photo is precious.
    Sending loving thoughts and hugs!
