The Simple Woman's Daybook . . .

FOR TODAY, August 4th 2020

Outside my window...

Its cool and slightly overcast, but I think it might clear. Yesterday was incredibly sunny, I was sitting here and a flock of starlings descended noisily onto the shed room. There is a tall bush next to it covered with ripe berries of some kind.  They quite enjoyed them. A bit later I looked out and there was a big fat orange cat sitting right beneath the bird feeder in wait. All of the baby sparrows are flying now. I think he though the feeder was a drive through restaurant. Mitzie put the chase to him.

I am thinking ...

This has been an incredibly difficult year on many levels for so many of us.  I have always thought it was a sin to wish your life away, but this year I find myself wishing 2020 could just be over soon regularly!

I am thankful for ...

The quiet of the  morning. I was reading the other day about good habits to maintain those who work from home, and I guess I am a person who works from home. Apparently getting up early several hours prior to the rest of the household is one of them. This is a good habit I've been practicing for most of my adult life now! I love the early mornings when I am by myself. I get so much more done.

In The Kitchen ...

Spicy Ranch Turkey Burgers.  These are fabulously tasty and much lower in fat than your regular burger.

On my "To Cook" list ...

Girl Gone Gourmet.  Poblano Chili Chicken Enchiladas.   We adore Mexican flavours in this house!

Good to know ...

I thought I was good at google searching, now I can be even better at it!

I am creating ...

Jo on Ravelry. Irish Knit Tea Cosy.

No pattern, just inspiration. I love this.

Flat Salley Book Mark. Again no source, but merely inspiration. So cute!

Hello Moon Crochet on Etsy. Knitted Pom Pom Hat. Not a pattern, but a finished article.

The Adventures of Bluegirl.  Felt Bon Bon Ring. Cute!

I am Reading ...

American Royals, by Katharine McGee
What if America had a royal family?

Two princesses vying for the ultimate crown. Two girls vying for the prince's heart. This is the story of the American royals. When America won the Revolutionary War, its people offered General George Washington a crown. Two and a half centuries later, the House of Washington still sits on the throne.

Like most royal families, the Washingtons have an heir and a spare. A future monarch and a backup battery. Each child knows exactly what is expected of them. But these aren't just any royals. They're American.

As Princess Beatrice gets closer to becoming America's first queen regnant, the duty she has embraced her entire life suddenly feels stifling. Nobody cares about the spare except when she's breaking the rules, so Princess Samantha doesn't care much about anything, either . . . except the one boy who is distinctly off-limits to her.

And then there's Samantha's twin, Prince Jefferson. If he'd been born a generation earlier, he would have stood first in line for the throne, but the new laws of succession make him third. Most of America adores their devastatingly handsome prince . . . but two very different girls are vying to capture his heart.

The duty. The intrigue. The Crown. New York Times bestselling author Katharine McGee imagines an alternate version of the modern world, one where the glittering age of monarchies has not yet faded--and where love is still powerful enough to change the course of history.

  3. Hi Marie, I've just made 24 madelaines using your lemon/ginger snack cake batter. They turned out great. I used a small cookie scoop so they are all the same size. Tomorrow they get decorated with your lemon glaze, fresh berries and edible flowers for our tea party. I also made peanut brittle for the loot bags, Susan's spiced pecans as a hostess gift, Frito Squares and Nanamo Bars. I love the cute knitted Irish tea cozy and I could move into that beautiful English cottage tomorrow.
Your birthday is coming up soon, Marie. I'm anxiously waiting our Christmas books from Susan. I'm going to post a little package to you on Thursday. It may not get there in time fot your birthday (I had to wait for something to come tomorrow) but that means you can keep celebrating! Hugs and love, Elaine
