The Simple Woman's Daybook . . .

FOR TODAY, February 23, 2016

Outside my window ...
It's dark and it's cold and it's been raining.  You can notice that the days are getting appreciably longer however as it isn't dark at 5pm now like it was.  Yay for more daylight!

I am thinking ...
This is my last daybook entry for February.  Where has February evaporated to?   Time is just whizzing by, again!

I am thankful for ...
I went into Chester yesterday afternoon with Sister Johansen and we walked clear across town twice and my knees held up!  I paid for it last night however, but I was really grateful that I managed it yesterday afternoon because it was so much fun and nice to just be out and about with a friend!

In the Kitchen ...

Miso Baked Cod.  This is fabulously delicious.  Seriously tasty and so simple to make.  No clean up either as it bakes in foil.

On my "To Cook" list ...

Autumn Salad by Sara Forte on Food 52.   This tasty salad has brussels sprouts, butternut squash, cauliflower, etc, in it along with a tasty sounding horseradish dressing!

I am creating ...

Daisy in the middle Granny heart dish cloth by daisy cottage designs.  This is cute, CUTE!

Felt Unicorn Headband.  Cute, from Tikkido.

DIY Wood Burned Salad Servers.   Just lovely and what a lovely gift this would be.  From Evermine Occasions.

Pretty little Paper Roll pillow boxes.  These are so cute.  From Centsible Life.

Really cute flag pins made using glass headed pins and washi tape!  Sweet.  From Silly Old Suitcase.

I am reading ...

The God Who Weeps, by Terry L Givens and Fiona Givens

“A supreme deity would no more gift us with intellect and expect us to forsake it in moments of bafflement, than He would fashion us eyes to see and bid us shut them to the stars”~Terry L Givens

"Whether by design or by chance," Terryl and Fiona Givens write, "we find ourselves in a universe filled with mystery. We encounter appealing arguments for a Divinity that is a childish projection, for prophets as scheming or deluded imposters, and for scripture as so much fabulous fiction. But there is also compelling evidence that a glorious Divinity presides over the cosmos, that His angels are strangers we have entertained unawares, and that His word and will are made manifest through a sacred canon that is never definitively closed. What we choose to embrace, to be responsive to, is the purest reflection of who we are and what we love. That is why faith, the choice to believe, is in the final analysis, an action that is positively laden with moral significance."

As humans, we are, like the poet John Keats, "straining at particles of light in the midst of a great darkness." And yet, the authors describe a version of life's meaning that is reasonable—and radically resonant. It tells of a God whose heart beats in sympathy with ours, who set His heart upon us before the world was formed, who fashioned the earth as a place of human ascent, not exile, and who has the desire and the capacity to bring the entire human family home again

The God Who Weeps is a beautifully written book with a beautiful message for a broad audience. Fiona and Terryl Givens endeavor not to prove God's existence, but to demonstrate the more modest point that a belief in God is not unreasonable. More specifically, they seek to show that the Mormon conception of God and our relationship with Him is not unreasonable. I am of course admittedly biased, but I think they are generally successful.

Rather than an ethereal and impersonal God, the Givens relate in beautiful terms the Mormon conception of a very personal God. A God in whose image we are made, who loves us and longs for our happiness. Who weeps over our grief, yet stays his hand so that we may learn and grow from this life and bring ourselves by degrees more in tune with his love for us. In short, the sort of God I worship and that makes sense to me.
A God who weeps is consistent with scripture and informs the questions, longings, and deep-seated feelings expressed by humanity throughout at least the last 2500-odd years.  This is a very enjoyable read.

Looking forward to ...
We have District Meeting this morning, then we are having the Zone leaders and a few of the people they are teaching over for supper tonight.  Tomorrow we have reach out.  Then on Thursday we are having the Elders over with a friend for supper and a lesson.  TWO baptisms on Saturday!  It's a WOWSA week!

I am learning ...
Still working on that patience thing.  Will I ever crack it?  I think I am getting better  . . .  but there are days when I am not so sure about that!

  1. Good morning Marie,

I believe you must enjoy every extra moment of light in the day. It seems so strange that your summer light lasts so long. Our days start very early and end earlier too. At the height of summer is is light around 4.30 and dark just after 7.

As usual your crafts enthral me. I craft so little now.

Enjoy your very busy day and even busier week.

  2. I am not sure how light works. I know that the closer you get to the poles, the length of days and nights differ greatly! You need to do some crafting just for you Suzan! I think you do so much for others, sometimes you need to think of you too. Love and hugs and blessings upon you! xoxo

  3. Here is some happy stuff....

Life has been abundant today. My avocado withdrawal symptoms have been replaced by a glut. This morning our new bread was mouldy, again. So it was tossed. On the way home from visiting dad we stopped at a supermarket. Mum desperately needed a drink of water and then when we got there she complained about the price. I was a complete bully and made her drink because she dehydrates so quickly and it always means a rush to the emergency ward. A dollar seems cheap compared to that. I had packed water for us all but it soon became very hot. While we were there I bought 2 avocados at $3 each and complained mightily, some bread and a lot of mum stuff. I drove home and found a message from Beth. A supermarket group and sent a load of food to school. After the kids had their bags filled, staff were allowed to pick from the left overs. Beth said there were 7 boxes of avos and heaps of bread. She came home with ten bread rolls of the super healthy kind and these are now frozen. A loaf of very crunchy soy and linseed bread, so my loaf hit the freezer. Two mangoes and 10 avocados.

What does one do with a round dozen of "eat me now" fruit? Dinner was revised and we had healthy toast with avo. We soon discovered it was not such a daunting chore as most of the first was inedible! I am thankful though as I will have enough of the stuff to satisfy my want for a long time.

  10. Hi Marie!

I so enjoyed your daybook today, so many fun things to look at and dream about! I loved everything, but that cute top was calling my name, and paired with the shoes . . . yes! I have been telling myself that I need to save toilet paper rolls, now I will do it and make those cute little pillows for my grands or YW, they would both love them!

The book sounds fascinating, I will look for it. For New Beginnings tonight, we have given the girls a little booklet, and a photo of a scripture or church history heroine, and asked them to do some research on her. Anything that make the scriptures more personal will bring them closer to God, and to realize that He is a very real
God, who loves them and does cry for them and want only good things for them. Thank you for sharing.

Off to get ready for New Beginnings! Thank you for making me smile today!

    Hugs,
    Barb
