Christmas Eve Favourites . . .

This Christmas Eve I am sharing with you a few things that are a few of my favourite Christmas Things and memories.  Merry Chrismas everyone!

I have always loved all of the preparations in the run up to Christmas.  The shopping, the baking, the planning.  Decorating the tree, listening to the music, the films, etc.  They are all a part and parcel of what makes my Christmas so special each year.

I love the Christmas Story.  Whether you are a believer or not there is something really special to touch every heart about the Christmas Story. It is the story of  a Father's love for all of His children and the lengths He will go to to ensure their eternal happiness and peace. It is a story of Hope for all mankind. Amidst all of the commercialisation and Ho, Ho, Ho of the Holidays, it helps to keep me grounded in what's really important about this time of year and about the importance of life and the eternal nature of things. It is mystical and magical.  Love came down and walked among us so that we have the opportunity to return and walk with Him.

I love the knowledge and belief in my heart that family is forever and love can be and is eternal. To be able to look at this life through the eyes of an eternal perspective gives what is essentially hard cheese a beautifully silver lining. The goodness of God is real. He has a plan. His purposes can and will be fulfilled. This is not all for nothing. Peace on earth, good will to man is a message of hope for us all.

This past year has enabled me to be able to see the best in people and some of the very worst in people.  We have all seen some very disheartening things and had to live through some really great disappointments. We have all experienced a degree of fear in our daily lives, but it has also been a great opportunity to see the cream rise to the top.  What is really wonderful is the tenacity of the human spirit to be able to rise above and forge forward through whatever  life throws at it. To see the love and dedication of our Health Services and Government despite frightening odds. To see the good in most people, and I do believe that in their hearts most people are good. Most people do and want to do the right things.  Lets keep it up. We will win the war. I firmly believe this to be true. Yes life is hard, but as hard as it can be, it can also be very wonderful.

Snow Globes.  Little worlds of Winter Wonderland. You can escape into them and wander around.  I think they are pretty wonderful.  I don't personally own any, but I do love them.

Charlie Brown's Christmas. It is the perfect mix of all that a good Christmas should be.  A mix of the spiritual and the festive.  I watch it every year on Christmas Eve and have done so since I was a child. It is one of my traditions.  Maybe next year I will be in my own place for Christmas.  This next year holds much hope for me.

The opportunity to do things over.  To get it right. A fresh start.  A blank page to write upon.  This has been the worst of times in many ways, but it is leading to the best of times.  That is a great blessing. There is a pot of gold at the end of my rainbow. I love Pots of Gold.

Winter Cheer. I love it. I love all the seasons. It is one of the things I love most about living in the Northern Hemisphere. The changing seasons. There is something to love about each of them.  That's my story anyways!  Its been a long time since I have had to make it through a Canadian Winter.  Talk to me in  few weeks, lol.

I always loved making Gingerbread men for my children. They are so cute and its so much fun decorating them. I have a brilliant recipe in my Big Blue Binder.  Its in one of my boxes downstairs. Looking forward to one day being able to unpack them.

I'm not very good at it, but I do love to wrap packages and when I do I try to make them as pretty as I can.  I also love scented candles. And I especially love the Christmas scents.  Warm and spicy.

All of my Christmas memories of years gone by.  Church with Dad.  Mom's baked treats. Christmas dinners. The excitement of my children.  Sleigh rides. Family times.  Dressing up Mitzie. In good times,  times of plenty and times of lean.  I just have lots of good Christmas memories. I am blessed.

I always loved watching my father put up the Christmas lights. He was always very methodical about it. He would lay them out and check each bulb to make sure it was working. We children would sit on the sofa together watching him. The excitment would have begun a few days before when my father brought home the tree. We knew that once it was in the house and dad started laying out the lights, the rest of the decorating and Santa's visit was not far off.

Hard Christmas Candy. Mom always had some laid out in a little dish on the coffee table. I liked the ones that tasted like cinnamon the most.  She would also have ribbon candy.  I saw some of both in the store yesterday. So expensive, small pots, but then again, how much of it do you really need to eat?

I can remember choking on a round peppermint ball one year.  My parents were out. The babysitter hung me upside down and walloped me on the back and it flew out.  Thank goodness! Round candy's, dangerous.  Probably why I don't eat them to this day!

Candy Cane Hot Chocolate.  Love the stuff and I love any kind of ceramics that are Santa/Christmas oriented. I need to start collecting them again I guess. Fun, fun!

I guess I just love the holidays, in good times and in bad. They bring light into my life.  Light is never a bad thing.

Not a lot to do today. We are going to go pick up a few last minute veggies etc. for tommorrow and Boxing Day.  We are going to have Meat Pie/Tortiere for our supper tonight. My sister is going to make homefries and I am going to make coleslaw. We'll put on some Christmas music and maybe watch a Christmas movie or two. We will see.  The day looks dry and clear.  They are calling for really warm temperatures over Christmas.

  4. So many beautiful Christmas memories, Marie. We always watch "A Charlie Brown Christmas" every year and there was always a dish of hard candy and a plastic gumdrop tree. We had tourtière tonight, too. Wishing you sweet dreams of sugar plums. Happy Christmas to you and your family. Love and hugs, Elaine

  6. I enjoyed reading through this one. I love Christmas and have many favorite things about it. I do love Christmas movies, music, and of course the goodies. I have many memories and I loved the photo of the Christmas lights that our father's worked hard to put on the tree. This one helped bring back a flood of Christmas memories. I loved the tinsel that we used to fling on the tree.
    Thanks for this fun one!
PS. I also have deep gratitude for the front line workers. I have family that are part of that. As a nurse, at times there has been a desire to be part of it all. Of course, I'm too old for that one. I did enjoy my times being a nurse and it was a very special part of my life.
    Sending loving thoughts and hugs!
