The Simple Woman's Daybook

FOR TODAY, September 19, 2017

Outside my window ...

What a difference a day makes. I just took this photo.  Its foggy, foggy, foggy and cold!

I am thinking ...
We went to Costco yesterday to get the tire sorted on our car and it ended up that we need all four new tires. They couldn't understand how we had passed an MOT with the tires we had.  They couldn't get the tires off however because it is a toyota and you need some special key to get wheel covers off.  So Todd drove to Toyota in Garden City to see if he could get the key to do that.  And they couldn't get them off either.  They need to be drilled out. So now today Todd is going to take them back to Toyota to have the coverd drilled out so they can get them off and then back to Costco to have them put on.  Toyota is charging us £60 to do that, and we have already paid for the tires/work at Costco. But any savings we had is now gone because we are paying it to Toyota.  I am thinking though if the guy who did our MOT missed the tires . . .  what else did he miss?  They say the life in most tires is 2 years and ours are 7 years old. It is a wonder we haven't had a huge problem with them or an accident. I will be on tenderhooks until they are changed.

In the kitchen ...

Easy Oven Stew.  So simple.  Just bang everything into a casserole dish and bake. Long and slow. No faffing about at all, and it's delicious!

On my "To Cook" list ...

From Simply Delicious, a gorgeously tasty looking Cranberry and Brie Puff Pastry Wreath. The holidays are coming!

Good to know ...

I am reading ...

AMERICAN WIFE, by Curtis Sittenfeld

A kind, bookish only child born in the 1940s, Alice Lindgren has no idea that she will one day end up in the White House, married to the president. In her small Wisconsin hometown, she learns the virtues of politeness, but a tragic accident when she is seventeen shatters her identity and changes the trajectory of her life. More than a decade later, when the charismatic son of a powerful Republican family sweeps her off her feet, she is surprised to find herself admitted into a world of privilege. When her husband unexpectedly becomes governor and then president, she discovers she is married to a man she both loves and fundamentally disagrees with--and that her private beliefs increasingly run against her public persona. As her husband’s presidency enters its second term, Alice must confront contradictions years in the making and face questions nearly impossible to answer.

This is the second time I have read this. I enjoyed it so much the first time, I am reading it again. Very well written and engaging.

I am looking forward to ...
We thought we might try to go to the Temple this week one day, so I am looking forward to that.

The hush comes with the deepening of Autumn;
but it comes gradually. Our ears are attuned to it,
day by quieter day. But even now,
if one awakens in the deep darkness of the small hours,
one can hear it, a foretaste of Winter silence.

  1. Hi, Marie! Good to catch up wit you... But so sorry to hear about your expensive and time-consuming problem with the tires. Hope all will be well. This evening I'm doing autumn veg roasted in the oven with some sausages--so easy, so good! VERY pretty crochet projects here today. And those sock 'roos are adorable--too CUTE! This book you are reading sounds very good. I hadn't head about this one. I love When Harry Met Sally, such a sweet film. Haven't seen it in a while--must revisit. It's cozy sweater time here...it's 10 C here today and getting pretty chilly in the mornings, evenings... Happy Week, dear friend! :) ((LOVE & BIG HUGS))

  2. Oh Marie I am so sorry about the tyre mess. My new computer has a physical problem and has to go back. Mum has been horrible today. I want to sit down and howl.

Have a wonderful day and God bless.

  3. We are still very warm here but that will soon change. Cars are so expensive to keep up with. It seems it's always something. There are days I wish I didn't have one at all but it's nice to be able to go when I want so I put car care in the budget so I have the needed money when things happen. I've had the same tires for quite awhile and they are still good because I really don't put many miles on. Sorry you have so much trouble in getting yours. Here's hoping for a better day for you ! Have a terrific Tuesday!

  4. Two years for tire life? For the little you drive? What kind of tires are we talking about? This sounds like a tire manufacturer's wishful thinking.

  5. Okay, I looked it up. 3-4 years if you drive 12,000-15,000 miles per year (average in US). They do say that if you rarely drive, your tires can still age, but not in 2 years.

  6. Oh dreary me Marie, what an expence that is going to be. Thank goodness they were not all needing replaced....according to the MOT...but if I were you I would be sure I would get caught up by the police...but it's really srange that they havnt shown sooner. I'm real sorry....Tyres cost so much, even cheaper ones....pray that you get some at a reasonable price.....
I have been very very tired today and havnt done anything so think I must have an early. Night....will try to return early in the morning...night night. God bless XXXX

  7. Like you Tracy, I think that WHMS is just a sweet, sweet film. Your dinner sounds very, very good! I am sitting here wondering what Swedish sausages taste like and what veg you roasted with them. I am ever the foodie I guess! Love and hugs! xoxo

So sorry about your computer woes Suzan. I hope you are able to get them sorted soon. Computer problems are so frustrating and for you to have them on top of everything else, well, it doesn't bear thinking about! Love, hugs and prayers. xoxo

Cars are very expensive to keep up Pam. We are hoping these new tires will last us for a good long time. A much untimely expense to be sure. We need to be better budgeters for sure! God bless! xoxo

Thanks Laura. In all honesty we don't know how old the tires are. They were the original ones that were on the car when it was given to us, so I suspect they were very old. In any case they are all new now and we hope that they last us a good long time as we are not people who drive a lot! xoxo

Thanks Sybil. It could always be worse I suppose! Sending you and Mary much love and hugs today and always. xoxo
