The Simple Woman's Daybook . . .

FOR TODAY, June 19th, 2018

Outside my window ...
The sky is a mix of brilliant blue and very dark whispy cloud. All is quiet except for the birds. Wondering what the day will bring. Its cool, but not at all unpleasant. We will have to pick strawberries today (yay!) as the plants are loaded with beautiful ripe berries. I feel a strawberry shortcake coming on!

I am thinking ...
I haven't seen as many bees this summer as we usually do. This is a bit worriesome. The honeysuckle and lavender are usually buzzing with them.  Not this year, although I see plenty on the palm.

In the kitchen ...

Yesterday I made some Lemon, Lime & Ginger Curd. I had limes and lemons that needed using up and decided to liven it up with a bit of fresh ginger root.  Wowsa! Sweet, tangy and a tiny bit firey. This stuff is amazing! I have discovered a new weakness!

On my "To Cook" list ...

I have always wanted to try a Manchester Tart, and this one I found on the BBC Good Food page by James Martin (a dish himself) looks fab!  He is the King of Dessert Makers.

Good to Know ...

I am creating ...

Picot Pals  free pattern for an Icelandic Poppy. Very pretty.

The Painted Hinge.  Fall Maple Leaves.

Love this cable cardigan. Vera Sanon on Ravelry.  Free pattern.

Astor by Nora Gaugn on Ravelry. LOVE this! Free pattern.

Plus I finished Todd's Blanket, which was based on the Ora Keily Blanket from Eight by Six. This is such an easy make.  I want to do another one.  Sigh  . . .  I love them.

I am reading ...

The Pattern Artist, by Nancy Moser
Born into a life of hard work, English housemaid Annie Wood arrives in New York City in 1911 with her wealthy mistress. Wide-eyed with the possibilities America has to offer, Annie wonders if there’s more for her than a life of service. Annie chooses to risk everything, taps into courage she never knew she had, and goes off on her own, finding employment in the sewing department at Macy’s. While at Macy’s Annie catches the eye of a salesman at the Butterick Pattern Company. Through determination, hard work, and God’s leading, Annie discovers a hidden gift: she is a talented fashion designer—a pattern artist of the highest degree. As she runs from ghosts of the past and focuses on the future, Annie enters a creative world that takes her to the fashion houses of Paris and into a life of adventure, purpose, and love.
Set in 20th-century New York, Nancy Moser’s novel explores the nature of courage, obsession, revenge, religion love, loss and more as she introduces us to THE PATTERN ARTIST, a tale sure to be embraced by fans of inspirational romance, historical novels and Christian lit.
Born to parents whose jaded view of a world where elites rule does little to dissuade Annie Woods in her belief that there is something better in her future. At the age of fourteen she leaves home and accepts employment with the wealthy Kidd family, where she is allowed to ply her talent for sewing and design (but receives no personal recognition for her efforts). A sea voyage to the United States with the family and their domestic entourage brings Annie into a world she had never imagined, some of it positive and some negative.
LOVE this.

I am looking forward to ...
Feeding the next set of Missionaries later today and having Tina and Tony over for lunch on Friday!

  1. Hi Marie, you whisked me back a good few years this morning with the Manchester tart. My lovely mother in law used to buy us a Manchester tart every week which she would give us when we went to visit her every Sunday. I'm not sure how it started, but my daughter still loves them and I still hate them, I don't like the coconut on top!!! Still, it brought back some long forgotten memories, thank you.

I love the cardigan with the long sleeves, I'll just have to learn how to knit now!

George is going for some sort of heart test today. He got a letter inviting him to go as he's now 65. I'd never heard of it but better safe than sorry. Good old NHS!

Enjoy dinner with the missionaries, lot's of love xxx

  3. Hi Marie~

Thank you for your visit on my blog...it's always a good day when I see your name there... :0)

I always look forward to your daybook, I love seeing and reading what you are up to. My daughter is really cleaning out and organizing her home, sounds like the same plan she is using. I need to do it as well. The other day, I threw away a huge stack of cards...it was very difficult! But, somehow, it also feels very good not to have to worry about what to do with them.

I love lemon curd, I could just eat it with a spoon and be vert happy! Ginger sounds like a wonderful addition, I guess it will be on my to do list!

I love the blanket you made for Todd, I especially love the color combination. I will have to give that pattern another try...it's the flipping thing that I don't get, but I will try it again.

What lucky missionaries to get to have dinner with you, and what a treat for you as well. I know they will enjoy the food and the company.

The book sounds really good. I love a good novel, especially a historical novel, they always keep my interest.

Your part of the world is so fascinating and gorgeous, thank you for sharing!

I'm off with the, Activity Day girls today. We are going to the Family History Library to be history detectives. I love that the church always makes it fun to learn about our ancestors. Have a wonderful day Marie! XOXOXOX

    Hugs and Love,
    Barb
