The Simple Woman's Daybook

FOR TODAY, March 27, 2018

Outside my window...
The sun is just coming up, but I can hear the dawn chorus. With each day that passes it becomes more melodic.

I am thinking ...
This month seems to have just flown by.  I can't believe how quickly it has gone. On this Easter week I am thinking about the Saviour and about the upcoming General Conference of the church. Preparing myself to hear whatever it is our church leaders want to share with us. We cleaned the back patio yesterday, getting rid of all the green stuff. Its incredible how quickly things get coated with green over here. It always amazes me.  Its moss but it isn't.  Its like some kind of algae.

In the kitchen ...
Twice Baked Mash.  This is really good.  Its the perfect side dish for your Easter Celebrations.  Perfectly portable.  Easy to make and oh so delicious!!  You can also very easily make it up ahead of time and then just bake on the day!
On my "To Cook" list ...

Jalapeno Popper Baked Turkey Sandwiches from Lemon Tree Dwelling.  These look fabulously tasty!  We can't get the Kings Rolls over here, but I am sure I can find a good substitute.

Good to know ...

I think I am going to have to learn how to make some of this stuff. Like Kefir and Kombucha and start fermenting.   I need to start eating more Turmeric as well. My friend Jo does and her knees have improved considerably. Now I can't take ibuprophen anymore, I really need to find something else to help with that. The Doctor said to increase my Co-codemol, but that's not a solution. It only helps with pain, it doesn't stop the inflammation.

I am creating ...

I love the colours in this free tea cosy pattern, crochet from Lion Brand. Downloadable PDF.

Anabelia Craft Design.  Two free crochet borders. I love linens with crochet borders.

La Abluela Lola. I love this cute caddy.  A complete tutorial, although I would choose different fabrics. You can translate from Spanish to English. It would make a cute little sewing box.

Hand applique Felt Pin Cushions from We All Sew. cute!

Easy do it yourself ruffled bed skirt, from Wood Grain Cottage

Easy Watercolor Notecards from Wandeleur.

I am reading ...

If I Forget You, by Thomas Christopher Greene
Two former lovers reconnect in this beautiful and haunting tale of great lost love from the critically acclaimed author of The Headmaster's Wife.

Twenty-one years after they were driven apart by circumstances beyond their control, two former lovers have a chance encounter on a Manhattan street. What follows is a tense, suspenseful exploration of the many facets of enduring love. Told from altering points of view through time, If I Forget You tells the story of Henry Gold, a poet whose rise from poverty embodies the American dream, and Margot Fuller, the daughter of a prominent, wealthy family, and their unlikely, star-crossed love affair, complete with the secrets they carry when they find each other for the second time.

Written in lyrical prose, If I Forget You is at once a great love story, a novel of marriage, manners, and family, a meditation on the nature of art, a moving elegy to what it means to love and to lose, and how the choices we make can change our lives forever.

BOOK OF MORMON CORNER

Today's Reading - Mosiah 27:1-17
Question - What was the purpose of the angel's visit to them? Why do you think we don't all have an angel sent in answer to a prayer?

Thoughts - Later in the Book of Mormon we will read Alma's account of his conversion, and interestingly we see that although he saw an angel, the thing that converted him was hearing the word of God. This is backed up in Alma 31:5, "the preaching of the word had a great tendency to lead the people to do that which was just--yea, it had had more powerful effect upon the minds of the people than the sword, or anything else, which had happened unto them". We can all receive the word of God.

This reading to me really shows the power of prayer. And offers hope to people with inactive family. We don't know how long Alma & the sons of Mosiah went on in this way, but in the end the people's prayers were answered, and mighty missionaries were prepared through this experience of rebellion and return. I'm grateful for Alma Senior's example of dedication in teaching truth to his son but also trusting the Lord to work in Alma Junior's life.

"Usually such beings are not seen. Sometimes they are. But seen or unseen they are always near, Occasionally the angelic purpose is to warn. But most often it is to comfort, to provide some form of merciful attention, guidance in difficult times. When we speak of those who are instruments in the hand of God, we are reminded that not all angels are from the other side of the veil. Some of them we walk with and talk with, here, now, every day.  Indeed heaven never seems closer than when we see the love of God manifested in the kindness and devotion of people so good and so pure that angelic is the only word that comes to mind." Jeffrey R Holland- The Ministry of Angels.

We may not see heavenly beings but our Heavenly Father sends us comfort and guidance through mortal angels who live the gospel in such a way that they can be prompted by the Spirit through specific prayer or by personal revaluation to minister to His children. We might not see heavenly beings because they are reserved for particularly powerful moments in time. If we saw them all the time we might not have need of faith as much. But they are there.

Tomorrow's Reading (Day 131) -  Mosiah 27:18-37
Question - What have you learnt from the reading today? How do we "become new creatures"?

Happy Tuesday to you all.  Hope your day is as special as you are.  Don't forget!

  1. Morning Marie..yes in first this morning ! Our morning down here is not like your bright one, it's grey misty even showery. Had said we could go into Chippenham this morning, which means leaving at 8.30ish but I don't have to get anything in particular so I might call it off. Only thing is I mentioned we might go to Val our neighbour and she will maybe be dissapointed if we don't go and I don't like letting people down.....but I think I will I can call her in half an hour or so.....yesterday was a busy day. It felt like my door was one of those that turn by themselves throwing people out at regular times ! All started around 9.30 when Muriel came in with the paper and stopped to chat, next was Val 10.30 , then Barbara at 11 , she had come to cut hair for Val, Muriel, and me. Marys hadn't grown so much...they all went around 12 then the gas man arrived at 12.30 just to service the boiler, Mary and I thought that was the end....but no 3.15 Val arrived again, 3.30 Lyn came for Masy, and so it went!!! Let's hope for a quieter day today xxxx. Hope you have a good day today. Much love xxxx

  2. Hi, Marie! Oh, I love this Holy Week before Easter! The heart grows so big as we wait for Easter JOY! :) I know what you mean about that green stuff... We have it here--both that is like moss, and another that is algae. Our patio is riddled with the stuff. We have an old junker vacuum we keep in the garage for junk tasks, and sometimes the mossy stuff cleans up with the vacuum. The algae sometimes needs scraping off of things. :/ So many pretty things today. That red box/caddy is so different! I've not seen something like that--almost Asian looking. I like those watercolor cards--good idea for "practice" pages. This book you are reading does sound very good. Hope the health cookbook will help you...will be eager to hear more about that, and what you make from it! Wishing you all there a BLESSED week, dear friend... LOVE YOU LOTS!! ((BIG HUGS))

  4. One of my friends said that eating cherries helped with her pain from arthritis. I still take 2 aspirin a day and that helps me. So far I can do that. Hope you do find relief. Spring showers have come our way today, and I'm hoping we'll soon see some flowers. Hope you have a terrific Tuesday!

  5. Thanks Pam! I do love cherries! Just wish they weren’t so expensive! I am not allowed to take aspirin now, nor my ibuprofen! Hopefully the turmeric will help! God bless! Xoxo

  8. I love the smell of turmeric and have been sprinkling some in my meat and veggies with pepper.. ginger too for 2 yrs now. Then I heard it was good for you..I just like the flavor. I've been told cinnamon helps too..with weight loss..good in sweet potatoes.
I also eat yogurt every other day with chia seed..flax seed..dk choc. Munch on walnuts and dk choc chips too.
My problem is I don't put enough salt in my food..that's why I now have a handful of potato chips..sour cream and onion..need iodine for thyroid..still learning. I have been eating some cucumber or pickles with my meals also. Some fruit in between too. I'm calling banana, pumpkin, strawberry and dk choc zucchini bread a fruit too for breakfast.Hahaha! So I think I'm hitting most of the chart. I can't eat the kimchi or that other stuff. Oh, plenty of water!
The salmon is way too expensive right now. I hope this helps you.

I can't have milk, butter..mayo ify bc I'm lactose intolerant. If I don't eat my Greek yogurt for 3 days..I have problems..gas pains..excruciating..something I don't talk about..but we're friends. Even almond milk with special k is intolerable at times. So maybe eating greek yogurt will help you too..just saying.

I think you'll feel better when you can get outside more..fresh air..just walking around your yard too.

Those colors of cozy would make a pretty afghan! I love afghan's and blankets hanging on sofas and chairs in the winter..store away in summer..moths..bring out quilts..cooler.

Oh, buying a bag of frozen cherries and taking a few out to defrost to eat or eat just when thawing out is good too. Esp when not in season..that's what my Mom does.

Started out sunny than clouds came in fast..snow is melting..see some lawn. Yay!

I hope you had a good night's sleep and feeling better Marie! Your always in my prayers!xo

  9. Hi Marie~

Thank you for taking a photo of your beautiful Camellias...they are so gorgeous!! I love the color, they almost look like silk flowers, just lovely! My day was so busy yesterday, I had Activity Days and it truly just wore me out...I'm getting too old for such busy little girls!

I'm so sorry you are having tummy troubles. I make my own kefir milk and kefir water, they have really helped me. Kefir milk is just full of probiotics and is so good for digestion. It is also low carb, the kefir grains use the lactos or sugar as food to make the kefir. I bought my grains online, but you can also find them at health food stores. It might be worth a try for you - we love it, I don't even drink milk, only kefir milk. Water kefir is also really good, and I drink lots of it as well.

I love crocheted edges, and have several table scarves from my grandmother's, I feel very fortunate to have them, they are so beautiful. Such beautiful pincushions, I wonder if they are filled with sand. I've heard that a pin cushion filled with sand will keep your pin and needles sharp.

Bob and I went to the movies a few weeks ago (we NEVER go to the movies, so it was a treat) and we saw, The Greatest Showman. Bob really liked it, I thought it was good, but it wasn't my favorite...I'm the odd man out, because most people loved it!

Love your corner of the world!! I would love to visit!

Oh my, the blessings of prayer!! I have so many, very spiritual stories I could share about prayer and angels. How anyone could witness and angel and not listen or believe is beyond me...but it is true, mortal angels are always a blessings, I've had more than my share in my life.

    Love you sweet friend!

    Hugs and Love,
    Barb

    1. Hi Elaine. I don't know what the problem is. I guess it must be a problem with feedburner. I think the best solution is is to just bookmark the blog and then visit every day, as I post every day for the most part. Thanks for your lovely comment! xoxo
