The Simple Woman's Daybook . . .

FOR TODAY, January 23, 2018

Outside my window ...
It is dark, cold and wet, but it isn't raining or snowing. We have had to have our heat on more this winter than last. Brrr . . .

I am thinking ...
We thoroughly enjoyed "The Darkest Hour" yesterday. Gary Oldman certainly deserves an Oscar for his performance. I even cried at one point, when they were talking about all of the British Army being on the beaches at Dunkirk being surrounded by the Germans and how were they going to get them out.  Todd's father was at Dunkirk and was one of the soldiers that was rescued by the flotilla of Civilian boats that Churchill sent over to evacuate them to safety.  Churchill really fought to do the will of the people. He was a great Prime Minister.  Some of the others would have sold the UK down the river to Hitler by appeasement.  Its a good movie.  I highly recommend!

In the kitchen ...

Lemon Roasted Chicken Leg Quarters.  These are quite simply delicious!

On my "To Cook" list ...
Savoury Watermelon Salad from B's in the Kitchen. This looks fabulous!

Good to know ...

I am creating ...

Crochet n Create.  Puff stitch dish cloth.  I love it!
The Unravelled Mitten.  Petoskey Lace Cowl.  Love this.
Lolli and Grace, PDF pattern on etsy for these cute ornaments.  They combine all my loves, pretty, embroidery and felt.
Jennifer Jangles.  Little Love Softies.
Vintage with Laces "Catch of the Day" with fabric and lace.

I am reading ...

The Stolen Marriage, by Diane Chamberlain
In 1944, twenty-three-year-old Tess DeMello abruptly ends her engagement to the love of her life when she marries a mysterious stranger and moves to Hickory, North Carolina, a small town struggling with racial tension and the hardships imposed by World War II. Tess’s new husband, Henry Kraft, is a secretive man who often stays out all night, hides money from his new wife, and shows no interest in making love. Tess quickly realizes she’s trapped in a strange and loveless marriage with no way out.

The people of Hickory love and respect Henry and see Tess as an outsider, treating her with suspicion and disdain, especially after one of the town’s prominent citizens dies in a terrible accident and Tess is blamed. Tess suspects people are talking about her, plotting behind her back, and following her as she walks around town. What does everyone know about Henry that she does not? Feeling alone and adrift, Tess turns to the one person who seems to understand her, a local medium who gives her hope but seems to know more than he’s letting on.

When a sudden polio epidemic strikes the town, the townspeople band together to build a polio hospital. Tess, who has a nursing degree, bucks Henry’s wishes and begins to work at the hospital, finding meaning in nursing the young victims. Yet at home, Henry’s actions grow more alarming by the day. As Tess works to save the lives of her patients, can she untangle her husband’s mysterious behavior and save her own life?

I started this the other evening and I am truly enjoying it.  Its really good!

I am looking forward to ...

Maybe getting into the craft room today and doing some painting.  I've been collecting cherry pictures to try . . .

Also we are going to Tina and Tony's for lunch tomorrow.  I love spending time with them.

Dreaming about ...
Cosy Cottage Bedrooms  . . .

Gingham Chair Covers, red and white accents  . . . pretty carpets . . .

Matching chairs and ottomans  . . .

Roses, stripes, checks and ruffles  . . .

Pretty pillow closures  . . .

Something to watch ...

Somebody Feed Phil.  On Netflix. Philip Rosenthal is perhaps best known as being the creator of long-running sitcom "Everybody Loves Raymond," but since that show went off the air he has gotten more on-camera exposure. In this series, he takes viewers on a goodwill eating tour of the world. Rosenthal -- joined by friends and family -- visits cities that include Tel Aviv, Mexico City, New Orleans and Bangkok to get a taste of the local cuisine and culture at each stop on his journey.

BOOK OF MORMON CORNER - Today's Reading -  Jacob 5:49-69
Question - What have you learnt from reading Jacob 5?

My ThoughtsIn the reading today the good and the bad were allowed to grow together for a time. This makes me think of mortality. We each have weaknesses and strengths in us, because of our 'thorn in the flesh' we can be humble and know we have to turn to Jesus and allow Him to change us.

I love analogies they help me to remember important principles. I like that the Lord really knows what He's doing with His vineyard and He gives it what it needs constantly, even when He could give up on the vineyard because the world is getting worse and worse He doesn't cast it into the fire because there is still a glimmer of hope there.

Tomorrow's Reading (Day 84) -  Jacob 5:70-77
Question - The Lord also laboured in the vineyard. What does this mean to you?

Have a great day!  I hope its a good one!  Don't forget!

  1. Hi Marie, hope you are well and that your headaches have finally gone.

I love watermelon, I must have it about five times a week but have never thought of having anything savoury with it. Must try!

We are hoping to see The Darkest Hour this week. It sounds amazing. A few years ago we went to Blenheim Palace and loved it. The gardens are amazing. A perfect place for a sunny afternoon!

We got back from London yesterday evening so will take it easy today. The drive takes it out of us. We had terrible weather down there and weren't able to get out much, which we both hate! Pete and Ashley are going to Hong Kong in a few weeks so we won't be going down again till the end of February.

Have a creative day in your craft room! Lot's of love xxx

  3. I have heard only good comments on that movie. Everyone has loved it. I've yet to see it, but would probably love it too. I saw watermelons advertised in the paper this week. I'm not sure where they are imported from, but they do sound good. The only thing that holds me back from getting one is that I'd have a hard time eating all by myself. Hope you have a terrific Tuesday!

  5. Sorry you had such lousy weather in London Kate. I guess this time of year it is hit and miss. I never got to see Blenheim Palace, but did go to Chartwell quite a few times, which was Churchills home and we thoroughly enjoyed eac time. You will love the film. It is very well done! Love and hugs, xoxo

Glad you were able to get in Suzan! Hope you have had a good day and evening. You are probably sleeping now! Blessings to you. xoxo

It was Ace Pam! I love watermelon also, and it can be somewhat daunting when you think of the size, but you can freeze it and eat it like sorbet. I love it that way and in smoothies. Hope your Tuesday is a good one also! xoxo

Kristin Scott Thomas was excellent Monique!! It had been about 2 years since we were to the Cinema also, but we wanted to get Peter out of the house and he likes films, so this was the chance! I looked up that book you naughty girl. I could not resist! Hopefully will be here by end of the month. I got it at a good price. Book Depository and no shipping. Bad me. lol xoxo

  6. Hi Marie, hope you have had a successful day in your craft room...I hope you have heard how your book is selling ?...I would never have realised you could make sorbet with water melon. I love it very much so does Mary in fact when she lived in Cyprus her mother didn't like bottled water so insisted that they only had water melons..it's a wonder Mary was not put off them forever ! But no we both love it. I rarely buy them though as they are so big but now I know you can freeze them and perhaps make sorbet I will buy one or get Peter to buy us one as they are usually too heavy for me to carry.....Hope you had a dry day, after all the rain we had yesterday we needed to dry out a bit....
Have you been back to Dr. Nurse etc. To see about your BP ?...hope so...take care. God Bless. Xxx

  7. I love watermelon Marie! I will eat it til I get a bellyache! Lol. They only have the little ones on sale right now. I have to wait til summer when the big watermelons are in the store.

Yay,Suze is able to comment again! I hope the New Year is happier for her!

I will have to try that solution for the balloons instead of helium in it. I wonder how far it would drift up into the sky. Interesting!

I think that book would make a great movie. I can't read books bc they make me fall asleep. Now put a good cookbook or magazine in my hand and I will read it from cover to cover. Just like your cookbook!

    Love and big hugs! ~♥~

  8. Hey Sybil, so lovely to see a comment from you. No, I haven't heard anything from my Editor about the book. I did write him after Christmas, but never heard back from him at all, so I don't know. I haven't been back yet about my BP. I need to kee a record for two weeks, but have had a hard time doing so. I keep forgetting. I need to kick myself up the backside and just do it! Love you! xoxo

Ahh Jan, books put me to sleep also, it takes me quite a while to get one read, but I always read in bed at night, even if it is only a few pages! I am happy that Suzan was able to comment again also! Love and hugs! xoxo
