The Simple Woman's Daybook . . .

FOR TODAY, April 28th, 2020

Outside my window ...
Its quite overcast this morning. I think we might get some rain, which isn't entirely a bad thing. I know that moods are brighter when the sun shines, but we do need rain sometimes as well.

I am thinking ...
I think I forget what normal is.  I fluctuate between positivity most days to being very concerned and almos shell shocked on others.  I sit and wonder will things ever return to normal. What will the new normal be?  I doubt things will ever be the same as they were, not for a very long time, if ever.

I am thankful for ...
Above all else I am thankful for my faith because if I didn't have it, I am not sure how I would be able to get through each day. Oh, I would get through them somehow I am sure, what choice would I have, but would I be sane?  I don't know!

In the kitchen ...

I've done a whole tutorial on how to create a sour dough starter that actually works.  Plus there are recipes for using some of the discard (sourdough pancakes, sourdough brownies) and it culminates in me actually baking a successful loaf of bread and with some ideas on storage for the starter. This post was a week and a half in the making. What good is being stuck in the house if you can't learn a new skill! I'm pretty proud of myself!

On my "To Cook" list ...

Julia's Album.  Creamy Bow Tie pasta with Spinach, Mushrooms and Caramelised Onions.  Looks very tasty! It will have to wait until I can access some fresh mushrooms and spinach, but I can always hope!

Good to know ...

Artist Hue. How to paint tulips.

I am creating ...

Molly Sews.  Sew a Floral Skirt.

We all Sew.  DIY heating/cooling pads.

Making Things is Awesome.  Casual shorts.

Start Sewing.  DIY Seatbelt Pillows, for when we are allowed to go out and about again.

Lorie Jayne.  Magnetic Bookmark and Pen Holder. What a brilliant idea!

I am reading ...

Perfect, by Rachel Joyce

Summer, 1972: In the claustrophobic heat, eleven-year-old Byron and his friend begin ‘Operation Perfect’, a hapless mission to rescue Byron’s mother from impending crisis.

Winter, present day: As frost creeps across the moor, Jim cleans tables in the local café, a solitary figure struggling with OCD. His job is a relief from the rituals that govern his nights.

Little would seem to connect them except that two seconds can change everything. And if your world can be shattered in an instant, can time also put it right?

I have only just started this.

Dreaming of ...

Sweaters with flounces . . .

Chairs with flounces   . . .

Beds with flounces  . . .

Socks that sparkle  . . .

Bedrooms with balconies  . . .

Makes me smile ...

Whenever Susan posts a new blog post.  Its a red letter day!

Something to watch ...

Three Girls on Netflix.  Inspirational true story about the Asian grooming of vulnerable girls/children in Rochdale in the UK.  We watched it when it first came out on the BBC, and are watching it again.  Excellent series.

Corners of my kingdom ...

Bluebells and Primrose in the English Countryside.

In careless patches through the wood
The clumps of yellow primrose stood,
And sheets of white anemones,
Like driven snow against the trees,
Had covered up the violet,
But left the blue-bell bluer yet.
~A.A. Milne

  1. Yea me too, Marie...up and down in how I feel. And today was not a nice day at this house...so that never helps. I am sad. But as always, you tuck up your feelings and proceed ahead. But we have a right to feel however don't we?
    Hugs, Elizabeth xoxo

  2. Hi, Marie! So good to catch up with you... I don't know where the days go at the moment! I'm feeling very much as you... with so much uncertainity, we're very much in a new normal, and that is still taking shape. It's very hard not to feel worry all the time, and wonder about how the rest of this year will go, let alone next year. Until there is a vaccine, so much feels very vague and uncertain. :/ It's not always easy to keep calm & carry on. It's OK to worry and wonder. And to bake bread! ;) Love your sourdough tutorial! I've been wanting to expand my bread baking and try sourdough. So thankful we've been able to still have access to good food, and are still eating well during these times. So nice, as always, the bits of sparkle here--thank you for keeping that up! And your current reading sounds really sweet! May you all be keeping well and safe there... LOVE YOU LOADS!! :) ((LOVE & BIG HUGS))

  6. I think I feel like you kind of up and down most days. I do try to stay positive but it is hard at times. The church as the sisters in this area to do medical grade face masks. They were pre-cut and I did 100 last week, so it was fun to do this service. They made a million the first week and it will go for 5 weeks. It's such a good project for us all.
I loved all your DIY projects. I loved the yellow skirt. I haven't sewed for years but in doing the masks, I am thinking more about it. I only have my Mom's 1936 sewing machine. I will share a story on that one.
Your book sounds a little unusual. I'm curious as to how you like it.
I loved all the photos of flounces. We do have the same taste; I loved them.
I would like to make some sourdough bread, so thanks for the recipes. I'm looking into it.
Sending loving thoughts and hugs for this one!
