My Favourite Things . . .

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOOPpfEd5Zsq2tbOc2-UBk6Njak8VrG7e7evggWXGZ2mh-j53ekFS5_iJ7oLR7meELGbGOHT1tpJoMRH-WDForIBx-F86puBU5K_uuGKf1hWiGc5Jko8kG6S71gFooUD3ZEZNrNzAWfJI/s320/alfp_favorite_things.png

A few of the things which catch my eye, inspire me, pluck at my heart strings, make me smile, or that I just enjoy.  Maybe they will do the same for you.

My favourite boy band of all time (and I hate to call them that) was/is the Beatles.  I loved their music, all of it.  I remember being heart broken when they broke up and even more heartbroken when John was killed.  I had always thought they would get back together and then I knew they couldn't and wouldn't ever be getting back together.  Plus John  . . .  was gone. To soon. Very sad.  Their music was incredible.  I remember being allowed to stay up and watch them on the Ed Sullivan show and the thrill of my life was visiting The Cavern in Liverpool where they started off.  It was a pinch me moment.

George Harrison was my favourite Beatle.  He was the quiet one.  Still waters run deep.  Songs like Something in the way,  My Sweet Lord, While my Guitar Gently Weeps . . .  they still move me, and I still love them. I always will.  There was a film about his life a few years back,  "Living in the Material World."  I need to dig it out and watch it again. Some people are just too tender and too kind and too deep for this world I think   . . .

Michael Buble.  He's my favourite Canadian singer.  I have loved every song he has ever sung.  He has the power to make me smile and make me cry.  I think he's pretty amazing and a good person on top of it all!  Love him!

Neil Diamond.  I know all of the words to all of his songs . . .  and he's never sung a song, or written a song that I didn't immediately fall in love with. One of my ex boyfriends and I had one of his songs for our song.  "Play Me."   "You are the sun, I am the moon, you are the words, I am the tune, play me."  My friend passed away unexpectedly a year or so ago.  I still can't listen to that song without tearing up.

Fabric Toadstools  . . .  Love them.  They are so whimsical  . . .

Wrought Iron Gates  . . .

Secret gardens that delight  . . .

English Cottage Style Decor . . . nothing matches, but somehow it does  . . .

Cut glass  . . .  so pretty . . .

Old stoneware bowls  . . .

Distressed furniture . . .

Vintage light fixtures  . . .

Little surprises  . . .  especially at the bottom of my cup  . . .

Fairy lights . . .  the more whimsical the better  . . .

Wooden floors . . .  especially if they have been painted or decoupaged . . .

Old Victorian Houses . . . but I wouldn't want to live in one.  They are beautiful to look at, but can you imagine the cleaning  . . .  maintenance . . .  heating bill  . . .

Geraniums on windowsils  . . .  still waiting for mine  . . .

Pom pom trims  . . .

Vintage transferware . . .

Vintage stoves (I know I am repeating myself).  This is the cadillac of vintage stoves. Can you imagine.  I just had to share.  Of course you would need a huge kitchen to house it.  One can but dream  . . .

And with that I will leave you with a thought for the day!

  1. Hi Marie, I love the Beatles too, not so much their psychedelic era though! George is my favourite as well! My sister was obsessed with Paul, even naming her eldest son after him. She met him several years ago now when he was doing something at LIPA and she was working at the university, she wasn't disappointed!!

It's amazing how a song can bring back memories from so long ago, sometimes even ones you'd forgotten about. Sometimes they can even bring you to your knees.

Have you seen the programme advertised with Vicky McClure (Line of Duty) that's on tonight? She organises a choir for people with dementia. I want to watch it but think it might be too heart breaking.

So pleased your ovens fixed! Lot's of love xxx

    1. I saw it advertised on the BBC news channel this morning. I am going to tape it Kate. It is a heart breaking disease. One of my good friends from high school, his wife was diagnosed about 5 years ago. Very sad. Their only child died from leukemia when she was very young. Some people's lives just read like great tragedies. You couldn't write this stuff as nobody would believe you. ((((hugs)))) How wonderful that your sister got to meet Paul That would have been thrilling for sure! I have only ever met George in my dreams! (literally!) They've always been great experiences! ;-) Love and hugs, xoxo

    1. It would touch me deeply also. These things happen because people don't speak out soon enough when they see something that they feel isn't quite right for fear of offending others, and when social services don't act quickly enough, or turn a blind eye to what should be obvious. I am reminded of a case which happened in Chatham NB where a little boy named John Ryan Turner aged 3 died after being starved to death by his parents, restrained by a harness in a darkened bedroom with a man's sock stuffed in his mouth to keep him quiet. This happened back in 1994 and my heart broke when I learned of it. I later came to know a gal who had lived right across the street from this family when it happened, and who told me after the fact that this poor little boy would often be seen tied to the front steps, driving a car back and forth on the step, no matter the weather, rain or shine. I had to ask myself, how could you watch this and not report it? To me that just seems wrong. I admit I lost some respect for that woman when she told me this, and I could never look at her without feeling angry. Back in the 1970's I had a little boy who was friends with my son, both aged 5, that was often in our garden, or at our house. I found him in the garden one night at midnight trying to take my son's bicycle. He often showed up at our house dirty, or unfed, clearly neglected. I finally reported it to family and social services, because I was afraid something would happen to he or his younger sister and I couldn't have lived with myself if I did nothing. An investigation was done, but everyone with the exception of myself was afraid to speak up. Didn't want to be seen as whistle blowers, which I get, but I would rather blow a whistle and have made a mistake than keep quiet and see an innocent child die. The mother of this lad was an alcoholic and my husband (who was a policeman) was called often to their house because of one issue or another. Their next door neighbor told me one time that she had seen both he and his sister in the back garden one night after midnight still in their day clothes. The sister was maybe 18 months old. All too ready to gossip amoungst themselves people are, but lacking in courage when it comes to actually doing something about it. It makes me angry, can you tell???? I will always speak up for those who cannot speak up for themselves. I hope these people who abuse their children like this get the maximum punishment alloted! And I hope that people who see it happening and do nothing get punished also. I have very little compassion for them! :-(

    4. No Applause needed. That old saying comes to mind, Bad things happen when good people do nothing! xo

  3. Ah yes. The power of a note, a lyric to bring the past alive. Been there, done that … and will, no doubt, do it again!
The Beatles! I was such a fan. Probably quite obnoxious to my poor parents. HA. What a thrill to have visited the Cavern! And George. My favorite; a beautiful soul. Have you watched his clips on YouTube as part of the Travelling Wilburys?
