The Simple Woman's Daybook . . .

FOR TODAY, December 12, 2017

Outside my window ...
Its cold and dark and icy. Winter came early.

I am thinking ...
We got to the crematorium alright yesterday afternoon. It was almost comic. Had a phone call from Peter about 15 minutes before we were due to leave.  Our Bishop couldn't get his car out of his drive so could Todd direct the service in his place.  Could I also print out about a dozen copies of this hymn he wanted singing.  No problem.  I went to print them out.  It spit out four and then stopped.  Printer was out of ink. We replaced the ink cartridges, but then the printer kept saying it was in error.  Finally got it out of error and it still wouldn't print, but it would photo copy, so we photo copied the remaining copies.  Dashed off to pick up Brenda, and we got to the Crematorium on time. Todd did well for having been thrown in last minute like that. Peter had forgotten his hearing aids so couldn't hear a thing anyone said, etc. But we gave Audrey the best send off that we could.  Then got home, sat down to do something on the computer and presto chango the printer spit out the remaining 8 copies.  Was Audrey having a laugh with us?  I dunno, but we did smile.
In the Kitchen ...

As promised what I did with the leftover roast from the other day.  Hot Roast Beef Sandwiches, but not in the normal way . . .  I used freshly baked Yorkshire Puddings instead of bread and paired them with homemade thick oven chips and veg.  AMAZEBALLS as Ariana would say.  These were fabulous!  Why did I never think of this before?

On my "To Cook" list ...

From Crumb, Cappucchino Biscotti.  I love Biscotti.

I am Reading ...

Wonder, by R J Palacio

'My name is August. I won't describe what I look like. Whatever you're thinking, it's probably worse.'

Auggie wants to be an ordinary ten-year-old. He does ordinary things - eating ice cream, playing on his Xbox. He feels ordinary - inside. But ordinary kids don't make other ordinary kids run away screaming in playgrounds. Ordinary kids aren't stared at wherever they go.
Born with a terrible facial abnormality, Auggie has been home-schooled by his parents his whole life. Now, for the first time, he's being sent to a real school - and he's dreading it. All he wants is to be accepted - but can he convince his new classmates that he's just like them, underneath it all?
WONDER is a funny, frank, astonishingly moving debut to read in one sitting, pass on to others, and remember long after the final page.

Thoroughly enjoying this book.  THOROUGHLY.  I highly recommend! Heartwarming to say te least.

I am looking forward to ...
Ward Christmas Party on Saturday. The Children's Nativity at Church on Sunday. Carol Service on Christmas Eve, etc.

BOOK OF MORMON CORNER - Today's Reading - 2 Nephi 13:6-14:6
Question - How can you see these verses coming to pass? How do you make your home a defence against spiritual storms?

My Thoughts - Love is my answer. Love of God. Love for others. Love for self. When my priorities are placed this way around I feel more in harmony with heaven. I feel like in the world the opposite is true and that often there is no love for God.   Elder Wirthlin said "The storms of the evil one can be stopped at the very entrance of our homes." How? DO the things that come with PROMISES of protection for us, our families and our homes. I'm so grateful we've been taught by the Lord how to make our homes a refuge and sanctuary from the world. I feel like He really magnifies every effort we put forth in this. Our families matter so much to Him.

I know putting the Lord first, being consistant in doing the 'basics' and in keeping His commandments is what protects and strengthens my family, even though we are only two. I especially feel the spirit fill our home when we listen to and sing uplifting music, watch Mormon messages, spend quality time with each other, serve together and try our best to observe the Sabbath day. But the biggest influencer I feel is how we treat each other, when we are Christlike in our actions and words and when we quickly put right our wrongs.

Tomorrow's Reading (Day 54) -  2 Nephi 15:1-30
Question - What have you learnt from the reading today? How is there a famine of spiritual knowledge in the world?

Have a beautiful Tuesday.  Don't forget along the way of your day!

  1. Surprise surprise I've got in first thing this morning !....it was lovely as always reading your thoughts....I have to say Mary and I both laughed at your chapter of ...incidents...yesterday....but good on Todd for stepping in at such short notice....I think Audrey would have liked that...
Mary and I both like ginger kittens/cats..that's why all these years ago when a friends cat had kittens and there was a ginger one I just had to phone Mary ( she was up in Edinburgh on holiday) to ask if she would like a kitten..the answer was a gleeful YES....it was just like the wee one in the picture. He had lovely Amber colour eyes hence his name Amber, he lived for 16 years....anyway hope today is a good one for you,.it is VERY FROSTY down here, so thick it looks like snow on the fences!....we will not be going out but will get a start on the Xmas parcels. Xxx

  2. I love sipping hot chocolate and wearing warm slippers while watching a movie.
I love the colorful socks and sweater patches.

I had an orange cat that I loved and he disappeared one day. Two years later I found out a scumbag neighbor on the next street stole him! They never let him go outside til they got another pet. He acted all skidish and ran away so I couldn't catch him. He wasn't the gentle cat like he use to be anymore.

When I had a yard sale someone asked me if my cat and dog was for sale. I told them no and not long after that, they both were stolen! How could someone take my son's dog Marie, that he paid for himself? He had a paper route after school. We found out years later that he was 2 streets over. He got loose during a bad snow storm. We even got in the car looking for him with the neighbors kids. Everyone was calling his name. We couldn't found him bc he was already taken inside someone's house.
Years later I called his name and he was trying to come to me while whining and these kids were holding the dog back. They moved soon after before I could get the guy that sold him to my son to help me get him back.
Those were not happy memories at all!
    Big hugs!xo

  4. Hi Marie, I know I shouldn't laugh but yesterday sounded like something from a slapstick comedy! I'm sure Audrey would of approved though and had a good laugh herself!!

We're off to Costco and Toys r Us today as Ashley has finally said what to get for Christian. So we're looking for a ride on car!

Have a good, warm and cosy day! Lots of love xxx

  6. As impromptu as it was, I glad all went well with the funeral. I know how hard it is to lose a dear friend and know the importance of being able to say a final goodbye. I never thought about watching a movie on You Tube. I'll have to try that out. I started to watch a movie last night and fell asleep in the chair before it was over! It's very cold here with a little snow and the wind is making it feel a lot colder. Stay warm and cozy!

  7. Hi Marie~

Some pretty wonderful things in this post!

I love the way you write, you are so descriptive, it's almost like I am there!! I was grinning the whole time reading about your crematorium adventure, I'm sure your sweet friend was grinning as well... ;0)

I have never made, Yorkshire Pudding, but it looks delicious with those big fat potatoes, yum! My husband loves Biscotti, it's the one thing he has asked me to make for Christmas, I need to hurry, so much to get done.

I've heard that, Wonder, is the book to read this year. Everyone I talk to say that they cry and laugh through the whole book.

I actually patched an old chenille housecoat with cute patches. The housecoat is still so wonderful, just a few little worn spots. I think patching is such a good thing, and I like the way it looks! The sweater is just looks so cozy!

I have wanted bookshelves like that for years...but I worry that I will also want to fill them...that's the problem!

I too adore old Christmas specials!! My favorite, hands down, is the Andy Williams Christmas Special. PBS usually airs it right before Christmas, I love it!

You are so right, Marie, love is the answer, what would our homes, or our world be without it?! I like to think that my home is a refuge for my children...my son will even tell me that sometimes, he just needs to come home. Very good thought on the scriptures!

I loved the pictures of your family on your last post, your mom is so cute! I love that she still goes to, Walma*t on Saturday...I'm sure that is something that just keeps her perking! Your son and daughter's photos were just priceless, so cute!! I hope they all had happy birthdays!

Thank you for the love and hugs, I think I truly felt them across the miles. Love you much Marie.

    Hugs and Love,
    Barb
