The Simple Woman's Daybook . . .

FOR TODAY, January 14th, 2020

Outside my window ...
Its raining cats and dogs.  The skies are just tipping it down. That's winter in the UK. It could always be a lot worse.  Snow is prettier to look at but a lot harder to deal with.

I am thinking ...
It sounds like the Royal Family is dealing perfectly well with the news of Harry and Meghan changing their home and roles. I knew they would. They are a family and that's what families do. Love comes first, even when you are a Royal. Nice to see.  Now I wish the press would just lay off and let them get on with it.

I am thankful for ...
I downloaded an app onto my iPad called Calm.  I have been sleeping better than I have in years.  It did cost me a little bit, but so far it's been worth every penny. It was my Christmas present to me.

In the kitchen ...

Broccoli Salad for Two.  Crispy tender broccoli, toasted walnuts, sweet sultanas, shallots and crisp bacon in a creamy dressing.

On my "To Cook" list ...

Chelsea's Messy Apron.  Toffee Chocolate Chip Cookies.  Dangerous.

Good to know ...

I am creating ...

Crafty for Home.  Handy homemade napkins.

Lovely Little Handmades.  Pillowcase Tutorial.

Crafty Pod.  How to make a sharpening pin cushion.  Designed to keep your pins and needles sharp.

Sew Many Ways.  Easy Thimble Pin Cushion Necklace.

Mama in a Stitch.  Modern Hot Pad, free pattern.

I am reading ...

A Hope More Powerful than the Sea, by Melissa Fleming

This is the story of Doaa, an ordinary girl from a village in Syria, who in 2015 became one of five hundred people crammed on to a fishing boat setting sail for Europe. The boat was deliberately capsized, and of those five hundred people, eleven survived; they were rescued four days after the boat sank. Doaa was one of them - her fiancé Bassem, with whom she had fled, was not; he drowned in front of her. Melissa Fleming, the Chief Spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, heard about Doaa and the death of 489 of her fellow refugees on the day she was pulled out of the water. She decided to fly to Crete to meet this extraordinary girl, who had rescued a toddler when she was nearly dead herself. They struck an instant bond, and Melissa saw in Doaa the story of the war in Syria embodied by one young woman.

She has decided to tell Doaa's story - the dangers she fled, and the journey she risked to escape the conflagration in her homeland. Doaa is the face of the millions of mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, daughters and sons who risk everything as they try to escape war, violence and death. Doaa's story will revolutionize how we see the thousands of people who die every year in search of a home. It will squarely face one of the greatest moral questions of our age: will we let more people die in boats and trucks, or will we find a way to help them?

Apparently it is now being made into a film by Stephen Spielburg.

Corners of my kingdom ...

The Mall. Buckingham Palace in the centre, the road leading up to it is The Mall, the large park on the left is St James' Park and the built-up part to the right is St James' replete with the old gentleman's clubs and various places of "The Establishment"  To walk down the Mall to the palace is a long walk, but fascinating.  On special occasions it will be jam packed with people from one end to the other. That's a LOT of people!

And that's my daybook for this week!

  1. Hi Marie, loved all your bunny themed items. You must be thinking of Easter. Will Anthony and Eileen's visit coincide with Easter? I think the Queen is being very gracious to allow Harry and Megan to step away from their royal duties wnd come to Canada at least for awhile. Enjoy your day. Hope the rain stops.
    Hugs, Elaine

  3. Hi Marie~

I think at this point in my winter...I would take a few rain drops ;0) We have been snowed in for two days!

The bunnies are adorable. I have a set of cute bunnies that I bought at Peir 1, that live in my living room. I heard that Pier 1 are closing a lot of stores around the country. I love Amazon, but they sure have put a lot of small(ish) stores out of business.

My daughter has taken up water-coloring, and painted a really cute bunny the other day. It must be the season...spring is right around the corner!
I love the hot pad crochet pattern! It looks easy, and people can always use a new hot pad, right?!

I would love to make pillow cases for my grands, what a great tutorial!

    XOXOX love you my friend!

    Hugs,
    Barb
