The Magdalen Girls by V. S. Alexander
Dublin, 1962. Within the gated grounds of the convent of The Sisters of the Holy Redemption lies one of the city’s Magdalen Laundries. Once places of refuge, the laundries have evolved into grim workhouses. Some inmates are “fallen” women—unwed mothers, prostitutes, or petty criminals. Most are ordinary girls whose only sin lies in being too pretty, too independent, or tempting the wrong man. Among them is sixteen-year-old Teagan Tiernan, sent by her family when her beauty provokes a lustful revelation from a young priest.

Teagan soon befriends Nora Craven, a new arrival who thought nothing could be worse than living in a squalid tenement flat. Stripped of their freedom and dignity, the girls are given new names and denied contact with the outside world. The Mother Superior, Sister Anne, who has secrets of her own, inflicts cruel, dehumanizing punishments—but always in the name of love. Finally, Nora and Teagan find an ally in the reclusive Lea, who helps them endure—and plot an escape. But as they will discover, the outside world has dangers too, especially for young women with soiled reputations.

Told with candor, compassion, and vivid historical detail, The Magdalen Girls is a masterfully written novel of life within the era’s notorious institutions—and an inspiring story of friendship, hope, and unyielding courage.

A real page turner.

  1. Part of the problem with these sickos, Marie, is that there seems to be SO MANY of them these days...as we are learning alongside our daughter in our fight to protect our darling grandchildren, who have already had some abuse we have learned. Here, there is little to no protection in the courts either...seems Europe is ahead in this one...terrible horrid problem. You may be on their radar for using the word that refers to what ought to be ONLY marital relations. ...you have to be oh so careful...one of my friends wanted to learn more about where our president lives and put that on her search online one day...but oh my, "those terms" put her on an awful website, and then it would not let her get away from the website somehow...but in this day? WHY does the www not protect us more...cut off those sites?

    1. You would think with all the technology and knowledge we have today we could protect ourselves better and that our internet service providers could block things like that! Its not right really! Surely these horrible sites could be taken down, but there is apparently a hidden www, which I know nothing about, but have heard of where these sick people do most of their dirty work. It is a double edged sword. So much to love about this modern technology, but there is also a lot to be sad about it as well, if you know what I mean! So many predators out there wanting to hurt people. I get messages all the time from men on my FB even though I make myself private, wanting to chat me up or telling me how pretty I am, etc. I can look in the mirror and I know they are blowing sunshine up my hooey, so I just block them, but it takes precious time to do all of the blocking, etc. I just hate it! Sorry that your grandchildren have already experienced abuse! That's terrible! xoxo

  2. Oh, my Marie... VERY sad to hear about what's happening with your food blog and strange contacts you've been getting. :( Hope that won't continue! For all the good, there is a lot of bad junk on the internet. Thank goodness for comfort food... LOL! Your Broccoli-Cauliflower Cheese is super-yum!! Good luck with your meal plan for Friday and cooking allergy-free... that is so challenging, I think. Those fleece hats are so cute--love the fringe-y poms! That colorblock shawl looks very cozy--I'd like to make one of those! :) Wishing a great week ahead, my friend! Thanks so much for your visits to my place and sharing a month of Thankful with me! :))) LOVE YOU LOTS!! ((LOVE & BIG HUGS))

    1. It does give me the creeps, or they want free advertising and leave questionable links in their comments! Or even their names! There are so many losers out there. Like you I just want to have fun, without any nasties! Creeps, bullies, nasties. I like to think and believe that there are more nice people about than the negative ones, but they do try to spoil it for us don't they! xoxo

  5. Too bad you have some creeps invading your space. There is always someone out there trying to steal our joy. I do love butter pecan cookies so will check out that recipe. I also loved that movie too, and most any one that has Barbara in it. She is one of my favorites. Hope you have a terrific Tuesday. Our weather is much the same here.

  6. Oh, that little Golden Retriever pup is so cute! I wish they could just stay small. I love my little Sammy. However, he is a little chunk. Regretfully, he doesn’t get out for a walk much.
Love your daybook as always. Your recipes look yummy espcially the Pumpkin one. I must say the title is a funny one.
I always love your scrafs, hats and etc. knitted or crocheted items. I really like the cute hats. I wish I was talented enough to make them.
I must try the vinigar cleaner for appliances.
I always love your dreams. I liked the antique doll. I actually have a couple of them. I should blog about my dolls sometime.
Well, I love these daily reading moments.
    Sending loving thoughts and hugs!
