The Simple Woman's Daybook

FOR TODAY, November 14, 2017

Outside my window ...
Its still dark, and very cold, but it is a dry day so far. I like that.

I am thinking ...
Of those poor muslims fleeing Burma for Bangladesh.  Why is the world not doing something to help these poor people.  I said to Todd I would take a family in. I know we only have a small box bedroom, but it has to be better than what they are going through. I don't know how to go about doing anything like this.  My heart aches. We need to help them. We don't have a bath to bathe children in, but we could get a baby bath, which would be something.

In the kitchen ...

Creamy Broccoli Soup with Cheddar Cheese. Real cheese.  This is delicious!

On my "To Cook" list ...

Pinch of Yum. Chicken and Rice Casserole. This looks really tasty!

Good to know ...

From Terrace Beesley, How to create  depth and interest in your painting by adding neutrals.

I am creating ...

Growing a Jeweled Rose.  How to make cinnamon ornaments.  I have done this in the past years and years ago.  They smell fab and look like gingerbreads.  And you can use white puff paint tubes to decorate them.

Gingerbread House Treat Boxes.  From The Craft Patch.

Mini Yarn Hat Ornaments.  Easy Peasy. From Easy Peasy and Fun.

Wire & Star Ornaments by Allysa and Carla.  I think these are really pretty.

Lila Griffith, animal felt ornaments.  These are so cute!

I am reading ...

Lisette's List, by Susan Vreeland

In 1937, young Lisette Roux and her husband, André, move from Paris to a village in Provence to care for André's grandfather Pascal. Lisette regrets having to give up her dream of becoming a gallery apprentice and longs for the comforts and sophistication of Paris. But as she soon discovers, the hilltop town is rich with unexpected pleasures.

Pascal once worked in the nearby ochre mines and later became a pigment salesman and frame maker; while selling his pigments in Paris, he befriended Pissarro and Cézanne, some of whose paintings he received in trade for his frames. Pascal begins to tutor Lisette in both art and life, allowing her to see his small collection of paintings and the Provençal landscape itself in a new light. Inspired by Pascal's advice to "Do the important things first," Lisette begins a list of vows to herself (#4. Learn what makes a painting great). When war breaks out, André goes off to the front, but not before hiding Pascal's paintings to keep them from the Nazis' reach.

With German forces spreading across Europe, the sudden fall of Paris, and the rise of Vichy France, Lisette sets out to locate the paintings (#11. Find the paintings in my lifetime). Her search takes her through the stunning French countryside, where she befriends Marc and Bella Chagall, who are in hiding before their flight to America, and acquaints her with the land, her neighbors, and even herself in ways she never dreamed possible. Through joy and tragedy, occupation and liberation, small acts of kindness and great acts of courage, Lisette learns to forgive the past, to live robustly, and to love again.

I have only just started this, but I am enjoying! (Thanks Monique!)

I am looking forward to ...
We are going to go to Costco later this morning. I am looking forward to that! I love Costco.

BOOK OF MORMON CORNER - Today's Reading - 1 Nephi 17:17-30
Question What have you learnt from the reading today? How do you maintain the faith that the Lord has something better in store for you when he asks you to give up worldly pleasures?

What I learnt -The things Laman & Lemuel say to Nephi remind me of the things Satan wants us to think & feel when we are asked to do something by the Lord.

1/ don't be a fool and think you can do something like this - you can't
2/you lack what's needed & have no experience in what you've been asked to do - you'll fail
3/ don't bother, settle for the easier way - you'll still be happy.

Satan takes Heavenly Father & Jesus Christ completely out of the picture. He wants us to only see our inadequate selves not measuring up to the task!!

Yes maybe we do lack what's needed and we are inexperienced, and most often we won't be able to do what's asked of us , at least by ourselves, but the Lord doesn't expect or want us to do it by ourselves. He will help us. When we choose to have faith in Jesus Christ we choose to add Him to the picture,  making it us, Him & the task. That's when we will find the confidence Nephi had and that's when we will be able to accomplish whatever it is the Lord is asking of us.

I don't have to look very far in my life to see where my trials have actually been great blessings. Where once upon a time I  might have been tempted to despair when bad things have happened, I have learned through experience that sometimes the worst of times is actually for my own benefit and contains a great blessing.  Knowing this, having experienced this first hand, helps me to have faith in the better things  that the Lord has which are in store for me.  Look for the blessing. I find if I do that, I always find one.

Tomorrow's reading - (Day 26) -1 Nephi 17:31-47
QuestionWhat have you learnt from the reading today? Why do you think Nephi is referring to Moses' experiences?

Have a wonderful Tuesday no matter what you get up to!  Know always that  . . .

  1. Like you, Marie, my heart goes out to those those Burmese souls on the run... It's terrible what is happening to so many people the world over--having to leave their home, their countries. :( Lots of sweet things here to life the spirits... Those felt animals are just aborable! I'd like a whole little forest of those! ;) Happy week, my friend... LOVE YOU LOTS, and your good BIG heart!! ((BIG HUGS)) P.S. I can't wait to watch The Holiday too--a MUST for this time of year, just like Little Women! ;)

  3. Everytime I start to feel sorry for myself, I remember those that have it so much worse than I do. Makes me feel rather silly as I do have so much to be thankful for that others only dream about. I cannot imagine having to flee for my life and leave everything behind. We are so blessed to live where we do. And I think that there but by the grace of God goes I. Enjoy your trip to Cosco.

  5. Like you Pam, I also think that there but for the Grace of God go I. I feel very distressed about this and want to do something. I had to get Todd to turn the television off yesterday because I just could not bear to watch it. Heartbreaking. We, here in the West, have nothing to complain about. NOTHING! Hope your day is going well! xoxo

I had a great time at Costco Monique! I spent a bit of money but I got some lovely cheese and some flank steak. I wish I fit the clothes! I have never been lucky enough to find any in my size yet! I can just picture you browsing the aisles. Fun fun! I will never complain about a cold again. Never. We have to much in the West. We are truly blessed. xoxo

  6. Hi Marie~

I know how you feel, I feel like these people are just lost souls looking for protection and comfort...they will be in my prayers, and so will you. I think if you want something bad enough, you will find a way. Good luck, you are such a sweet soul, Marie.

So many cute ideas for, Christmas! I think it's funny that so many of your ideas, are pinned on my Pinterest account! One time, very long ago, when my children were very small, I made some really adorable felt ornaments. I think I still have a few of them...oh, the memories. We were so poor, and I bought a small felt ornament kit, so that I would have something new to put on the Christmas tree. They were so cute, and made me smile whenever I looked at them.

I dream of a kitchen like that - oh my...I love the butcher block counter tops, and the old farmhouse sink... :0)

    Wonderful post!

    Hugs and Love,
    Barb

  7. Thsnks Barb! On our Christmas Tree when the children were growing up, all the ornaments were hand made. One year I made gingerbread men and decorated them, and we strung together popcorn and cranberries. After Christmas the birds got the popcorn and berries. Our Christmas was punctuated that year with the sound of gingerbreadmen falling from the tree as they softened and my hanging threads pulled through the holes I had put in them to hang them. I wish we could get cinnamon hearts over here! Each of my gingerbreadmen had a cinnamon heart! Love and hugs! xoxo

  8. I do enjoy reading your Simple Women’s Daybook entries. You are such an interesing and entertaining Sister that I love. I feel so sad about all the sisplacred families and indivduals all over the world. We have quite a few refugees in Salt Lake that are slowly being placed in homes and etc. We will be having a RS service project soon to help with some of those needs. The world is in such commotion. I love your generous heart in wanted to help them.
Every year you always have so many fun ideas for Christmas. Maybe at some point of time I can figure out how to actually do some of them. I can dream can’t.
I think the book you are reading is so interesint. I have a list of book I would love to read so I will add it to my list. Gosh, I might be caught up in about 20 years at least at the rate I am going.
I always love the decor photos you post; we have similar tastes.
The good dishes always looks so yummy!
Blessings and hugs for you dear friend!
