A Day Book . . .

FOR TODAY, December 10th, 2024

OUTSIDE MY WINDOW . . .

I took this photograph late yesterday afternoon as it was getting dark outside. I loved the way I could see my Christmas tree reflected in the windowpanes. I was feeling very cozy inside my little house. Nutmeg snuggled into my side and Cinnamon keeping me warm from just behind me on the back of the sofa.  A little family.  My little family.

I AM THINKING . . .

It is only two weeks until Christmas Eve will be here. This month is passing by far too quickly. I am trying to savor each day and to get the most out of this wonderful season as I can.  I wish I could get time to slow down.  Last evening I watched my church's annual Christmas Devotional on YouTube. I really enjoyed it and it was a very pleasant and meaningful way to spend my evening.  I enjoyed every minute of it. The beautiful music and the special messages shared. All were really lovely.

I AM ALSO THINKING . . .

I am thinking about how much I am missing my Christmas Cards this year, both sending and receiving. They have always been one of the things I enjoyed a great deal with the Christmas celebrations.  Yesterday was my youngest daughter's birthday, and Sunday was my youngest son's.  I was not able to send them cards this year, and I did buy them. I could wish my daughter a Happy Birthday on FB. I did so privately and shared the recipe with her for the cake that I had always baked for her on her Birthday. I could see where she had actually read it. My son I was unable to leave any messages for on his birthday because he blocked me on FB last Mother's Day for wishing his wife a Happy Mother's Day. I do not know him and perhaps I never did . . .

Gingerbread House Inspired Mince Tart

IN THE KITCHEN . . .

A Pretty Gingerbread Inspired Mince Tart. It was so much fun making and baking this yesterday.  I had been planning this for a few weeks now, thinking about how I could execute it, etc. It was a lot easier to make than I had supposed. I really don't think that there is a way that this could come out not cute.  I really don't. I was very pleased with how mine turned out and I am not an expert baker, confectioner!

ON MY "TO COOK" LIST . . .

Winter Minestrone Soup from Yummy Addiction. This looks so delicious!

LOOKING FORWARD TO . . .

I am looking forward to decorating my Christmas Cake, probably next week. I have gotten some really cute decorations to use on it that I cannot wait to show you.  But I am saving it for a video. Shhh . . .  mum's the word.

SOMETHING NICE . . .

I love the sentiments expressed in this. This is the sweet life.  A life where what some consider to be mundane is celebrated for the simple joys that they truly are.

SOMETHING ELSE THAT'S NICE . . .

A jar filled with vintage laces and trimmings  . . .

THINGS I KNOW TO BE TRUE . . .

Love isn't love until you give it away. It is in serving others that our lives become filled with joy. They need not be grand gestures. Pure and simple acts of kindness are often the most meaningful and well received.

I AM CREATING . . .

A home filled with love and peace and comfort . . .

Pretty pillow cases  . . .

Embroidery  . . .

Bits of whimsey as, when and wherever I can  . . .

It doesn't take much to turn something simple into a thing of beauty  . . .

OH MY GOODNESS . . .

I have always loved Red Polls. I used to get quite a few of them at my home in New Brunswick. I used to spend hours watching all of the beautiful birds which visited my feeders.  When I think of all the homes I have lived in in my lifetime, that is the one I loved the most.

OH HOW I WISH . . .

That our world was filled with more love, joy and peace. That nobody was hungry, or afraid, or cold, or unloved. A world where serving others was just what we did without even thinking twice about it.  Second nature. A world full of giving.

  2. So much loveliness here today, Marie! ☺️😬 “Love isn’t love until you give it away,” what a beautiful way to think about that! Love really isn’t about us, ourselves, but about others, true. Your top photo of/from your window is sooo pretty! I just love all the extra light and prettiness around this time if year. That old Charisma’s books sounds delightful! Oh, and your gingerbread house mince pie—TOO CUTE! 😍 Looking forward to your Christmas cake. That minestrone looks so good… yum! I’ve got a potato soup going in the slow cooker. So thankful for soup season… and how easy soup is to make! It makes my heart sad that your heart is sad over your youngest daughter and son… May time heal all yet! 🙏🏻 Much LOVE—Tracy 🩵❄️🩵

  3. So many parents today are in somewhat the same situation you are, Marie...some of us not totally forgotten, but also mostly ignored...certainly, we expected our children would love us as much as our parents loved us and we loved them, etc. But we have to remember they may not have received much of our genes (a nurse friend pointed out to me that we really do not get entirely the same amount of genes from each parent...her grandson when DNA teste, had primarily their family genes rather than those of the sperm donor). Sometimes that is good...sometime not so much. It sounds like 2 of your children really did not inherit much of you because you are always looking for ways to connect etc. So I think there are ways our children can indeed be strangers to us...but we gave them life and did our best to care for them all their life...we gave them all we could. I struggle more in the dark times of the year too...guess we have to look forward to Spring so much as we can huh? And as always, the next life as well!! Sending you hugs...

  4. Fog warning this morning, it will take a lot for the sun to get through. I remember fog in London in the 50’s, so dense the ticket collector on the bus would walk in front with a lantern. What a memory. I think for a small fee joining Jacquie Lawson for a month is a good deal. Even if post office goes back to work mail won’t make it for Christmas. Time for change and I’m not sure the post office workers are ready for that. Parcels still getting delivered by other services. We have been watching Christmas movies on these dark and dreary evenings with twinkle lights on in the house.
