My favourite things . . .

These are a few of my favourite things. Maybe some of them are yours too!

Coronation Street, the soap.  I've been watching it since it was in black and white back when I was a girl.  Of course in Canada it is about six months behind here.  I have always loved it and the characters on the show.  I love that they tackle some pretty strong issues like their recent sex ring grooming story, and Sally Webster's Breast Cancer, etc. Its always done tastefully and they always leave numbers you can call if you have been affected by the story line. Not everyone in the show is beautiful or wealthy. Most are just normal every day folk. I used to watch East Enders once upon a time, but it got to be a bit too dark and depressing for me so I don't watch that anymore, nor do I watch Emmerdale or any other soap.  Just Corry.  Its like the steak of soap operas, and when you have had a great steak why would you settle for anything less. ☺

Pound Cake or Madeira Cake.  I just adore it.  My mother used to buy it when we were kids and we would have it for dessert sometimes with some tinned peaches and ice cream.  What a treat that was.  I still love it that way.

I love lace.  Anything lace.  Curtains. Trims. Tablecloths. Collars. You name it. I just love lace.

Brussels Sprouts.  I adore them. Steamed, boiled, roasted, stir fried, etc. They are one of my favourite vegetables.  When properly cooked at any rate.  I don't think anyone likes them when they are overcooked.  I bought tinned ones once.  BLECCH!  They were just plain nasty. Seriously nasty.  I could eat a whole plate filled with properly cooked brussels sprouts and be quite happy!

I love all the seasons and I am so glad that I get to live in a temperate climate where I get to experience each of them in a moderate way.  England, in the North West, is not a country of great extremes.  You don't get super hot summers or super cold winters.  But you get a nice variety all the same.  I am so happy that I live where we get summer, autumn, winter and spring!  Without Tsunamis, Typhoons, etc.  and very little stifling humidity. I do miss snow sometimes, especially at Christmas, but I am not bothered about snow once Christmas is done and dusted.  I like not having to shovel and dig my way out of anything to go anywhere.

Of all the decorating styles I think I love the Modern Country Cottage style most of all.  It's not too frou frou, but also not clinical.  Its a happy mix of everything, but not in an overly cluttered way. Its cosy without being too over the top. I think I would love to have a corner sofa.  It would afford us the most seating in this lounge of ours without taking up too much room.  I am saving my pennies.

I love LOVE tomatoes.  Fresh, tinned . . .  whole, chopped, with chilis or without.  Herbed or not. Raw or cooked. I just love tomatoes.  We did not grow any this year.  With Todd having been ill, etc. we just never got around to it. But I hope to next year and I want to grow garlic also.  I simply adore tomato sandwiches.  Oh, but they are so good. My mother used to have one every day for lunch. I might have one today for lunch.  I baked another loaf of bread yesterday and it turned out fabulous.  I might have a tomato sandwich today for my lunch on homemade bread with mayo, seasalt and black pepper. Sounds like a plan! This is the time of year that fresh tomatoes are at their best!

I do love a good Farm Market where you can get plenty of fresh and local veg.  They are always a cornucopia of taste and colour.  I need to find one near me.  So far I haven't been able to, but I know there are some great ones in Wales.  There is nothing like fresh and locally grown fruit and veg.  Its the best.

Root Beer Floats.  I love Root Beer Floats.  When I lived in Canada I treated myself to one every summer and I am happy to say that Todd and I got to enjoy one this year also.  I had found some Root Beer (A&W too!) a few months back and saved two cans just so we could have this pleasure. And we sat down the other night and that is just what we had. A Root Beer Float and it was sooooooo good. I had not had one in a very long time.  I savoured every drop of it.  If I had the money I would open a diner here and it would serve root beer floats, and proper hot dogs, burgers and chips.  There would be blue plate and early bird specials, and the menu would be stuck all over the wall hand written on place mats, and it would change every day. And there would be all day Breakfasts too.

Which brings me to my final favourite thing today  . . .

The Elm Tree Diner in Houlton, Maine.  We usd to eat there every time we went to Maine shopping when I lived in New Brunswick.  The food and atmosphere was fabulous!

Every sandwich a tasty piece of heaven.

Okay, time for just one more  . . .

Anna Mae's Bakery and Restaurant in Millbank, Ontario.  Oh boy, this is the best place to eat in Southern Ontario that I have ever been to.  Run by the Mennonites, the food is fabulous with a menu that changes according to the day of the week.

Everything is homemade and from scratch.  We always went on Turkey Dinner day.  We used to live not too far from there.  We always, always enjoyed it! Their pies are to die for.

And that is my favourite things for this week.  I think I better go get me some breakfast!

A thought to carry with you . . .

In The English Kitchen today . . .  Steakhouse Steak & Chips.  This is so good, with a fab parsley chimichurri sauce and pan fried chips.

Have a wonderful Thursday.  Don't forget!

And I do too!

  1. Hello. It has taken me hours to get my computer to open. Now I am terrified it will shut down. I loved your post but will now bid you goodnight and send you a hug too. God bless.

  2. I was told recently that I eat far too many sandwiches. Summertime means lighter eating and a sandwich can make a meal for me . I do love them. Quick and easy with no fuss. Have a great day. Happy Thursday!

  3. Have a beautiful day..always neat to see what you fancy:)

  4. Aww so sorry you have so many computer woes Suzan! Hope you can get them sorted! Xoxo

Is there such a thing as too many sandwiches Pam? I find a sandwich makes the perfect meal sometimes! God bless! Xoxo

Thanks Monique! Hope your day is special also! Xoxo

  5. Love most things that you do with the exception of tomatos, maybe tiny cherry ones plucked of the bush as you pass on a warm day and popped into your mouth.......mmmmm they are specially nice but I say no to any other kind. I am lucky that there is a good market in Chippenham only about 8 miles up the hill....intact that's where I will be. going in the morning, Sheila my friend wants to make dinner for Mary and I on Saturday something like roast vegetables with feta cheese so we have to get the provisions!!! She is still driving me mad with her incessant speaking, even as I write this, she just NEVER stops. Apparently Emerdale is her fav prog. So we watch it....I rarely hear a word of it, I have taken to putting up the sub titles so I can at least glance at them LOL.... It has been a nice day down here, we went to the beautiful gardens at Holt, The Courts, it is lovely there and Sheila did enjoy herself...Now I hope to go to bed in about an hour...if she stops speaking LOL.....night night God bless

  6. Sybil I understand. My mother has to tell me what's on TV, even if I am reading. She bugs me about everything I do and it is always how wrong I am. Sometimes I just have to say, 'Can we have something positive please."

    God bless.

  7. Oh dear Sybil! It must really try your patience! It would mine. We have subtitles on our telvision also. Partly because of Todd's deafness, despite his hearing aids, and partly because the actors seem to mumble nowadays and you can't understand what they are saying. My, I do sound grumpy, don't I! xoxo

    You're a saint Suzan! xoxo

Your comments mean the world to me, and while I may not be able to address each one individually, each one is important to me and each one counts. Thanks so much!
