Small and Wonderful Things . . .

"The world is fairly studded and strewn with pennies cast broadside from a generous hand. But who gets excited by a mere penny? It is dire poverty indeed when a man is so malnourished and fatigued that he won't stoop to pick up a penny. But if you cultivate a healthy poverty and simplicity, so that finding a penny will literally make your day, then, since the world is in fact planted with pennies, you have with your poverty bought a lifetime of days. It is that simple. What you see is what you get." ~Anne Dillard

A few of the small and wonderful things which bring untold joy into my life. It's the small things in life which truly mean the most. Simple abundance . . . it's the best.

This was the view outside my front window late yesterday afternoon. So beautiful.  It was snowing quite heavily at that point and continued like this for a while. It was so peaceful. I was just sitting indoors with the cats watching it fall, listening to some beautiful music. Such a lovely and calm way to spend a part of my day.

Because of the snow I was not able to get to my sister's for Sunday Dinner, but that was okay.  I was safe and warm and at home.  Having a place to shelter and a home in bad weather is a particular blessing that many do not experience.  I will never take mine for granted. Never.

Is there anything cozier than a hot water bottle on a cold winter's day? Probably, but having a hot water bottle at my disposal is pretty nice all the same.  I don't have a furry cover for mine like this one, but I do have a knitted cover, and it is still very cozy.

Remember the Sunbonnet Sue Needlebook Tutorial I created a few years ago? I had given that needlebook to my daughter-in-law Kayla a number of years back.  I decided to make myself another one and started it yesterday.  I have a great love for needlebooks. To be able to create is one of the greatest gifts from God.

On Saturday I tried taking two of my Metformin tablets in the morning and I was sick the whole day through.  I was in bed by 8:15 on Saturday night. Yesterday I took only one and felt so much better.  I know that it can take time to get used to changes in medication.  But that is just horrible. I am not sure what to do.  If my blood sugars are regulated with just taking one, I cannot see the need it taking more?  What to do . . .  what to do . . .  My son Doug takes one which is a time release one.  Maybe I should ask about that one?  I am grateful that I live where I have access to free healthcare. Many do not. I have been blessed to have free healthcare all of my life.

The Danish art of Hygge. I practice it every Winter.  It brings me joy.

"Hygge is a Danish and Norwegian term that describes a cozy, contented mood evoked by comfort and conviviality. It involves fostering a calming ambiance, typically indoors, that encourages a feeling of ease and happiness."

Lighting, warmth, coziness.  I am very contented.

Keeping the Sabbath Day.  I try always to make my Sunday's a bit different than the rest of the week.  Some people don't watch television at all. I don't have anyone here to talk to or interact with so I do watch television, but I try to only watch things on Sunday that are in keeping with the Sabbath.  Music and the Spoken Word is a favorite program I like to watch.  Old black and white films or television shows with values and charm. No violence. I like to read my scriptures or books/articles that are peaceable and calming as well.  It is meant to be a day of rest and of worship.  I keep it as such as much as possible.  Normally I go to church. I did not go yesterday, but I did watch church online. How wonderful it is that in this day and age we have the technology and the ability to do this.

Taking the time to be present in your life, turns your life into a "present."  Be aware. Be grateful. Be in the moment. Seek the joy that is in every day and that is only yours to find. Be thankful.

I have chosen to surround myself with peace and with peaceable things. Life is so much better without chaos. It does take an effort at times. Doubt does creep in.  Thankfully I have the tools in place to chase that doubt away.

This has never been more important to do than it is now. We live in such a disruptive world, a world filled with chaos and turmoil.  We do not have to invite it into our homes and lives. It is a choice we make.  For a harmonious life this is essential.  Just walk away from everything that doesn't bring peace into your life. It does make a difference.

Warm socks and slippers.  Cozy toes. If my feet are warm, then the rest of me is warm.

A nice warm drink.  It warms the hands and the heart.  Make it a ritual.  Turn it into something special. A treat.  For the eyes and all your senses. You would do it for company.  Why not do it for yourself.

I try to fill my life with things and people who bring me joy.  Warm hearts.  Family. Faith. Friendship. Home.  Peace. Contentment.  Having enough and knowing that it is enough is key. I want for nothing in my life. I have all that I need, right here, right now.  I am content.

And with that I best leave you with a thought for the day  . . .

Mary Berry's Easy Quiche

In The English Kitchen today  . . .  Mary Berry's Easy Quiche.  This really is easy.  A soft flour tortilla is used as a crust rather than pastry. No fuss. No muss.  Easy and delicious! Not too big, sized right for a smaller family.

I hope that you have a beautiful day and that your week is filled to overflowing with the things in life that truly matter most.  Faith, Family, Friends. Good health. Peace. Comfort. Be blessed.  Don't forget!

All Things Nice . . .

You have to work at friendship
Like a gardener with his flowers,
Cherish the tiny buds of love,
Treasure the happy hours,
Plant loving seeds for future bloom
Pluck out the weeds and tares,
Water the soil with loving deeds,
And firm it down with prayers.

You have to work at friendship,
With a tenderness and zeal.
Drawing your friends into your heart,
With roots as strong as steel,
Shaping the growth with loving thought
As careful gardeners do,
If love and peace and happiness
Will ever bloom for you.

For friendship is a tender plant
Of bud and root and vine,
Frail as the mist above the hills,
Fragrant as myrrh and pine,
Rooted in the earth its branches reach
Beyond the farthest sea,
Yet clings in little tender words
Between my friend and me.

And like all worthwhile things it pays
Dividends in a hundred ways.
~Edna Jacques, Friendship
The Hills of Home, 1952

One thing which I have been richly blessed with in life are good friends.  I am a rarity as an Airforce brat in that I have friendships which go way, way back and which are still in place. This is not a common occurrence as children of armed forces personnel tend to move a lot and our friendships are very transient like our lives. The fact that I have been able to maintain and keep in place some of these friendships for sixty-five years is a very rare thing.

This is a picture of the awards ceremony at the end of Grade 1. I am the one in knee socks and saddle shoes.  The one on the vary far left is my friend Susan Warburton, and the one getting the gift from the teacher is Eileen Sargeant. These two girls are still my friends after all of these years.  These friendships have survived many moves and happenings in each of our lives.  Eileen is the one I named my oldest daughter after, and she came to visit me once when I was living in the U.K.  Susan and I have touched base in person many times through the years. These two are some of my oldest and my dearest friendships and I treasure them deeply.

Of course, my very oldest friendship is the one I share with my sister.  I cannot tell you how many years because she doesn't like people knowing her age, lol.  But she is 3 years younger than me. I can remember the day my mother brought her home from the hospital. I was not so enamored with her, but I understood that she was there to stay and so I quickly became a little mother to her. We are very close.  We talk every day, multiple times a day, and we do spend a great deal of time together. I love her dearly.

But you all know that.

I have been blessed to have many good friends in my life. You all know who you are.  I treasure each one of you deeply.

It is freezing cold this morning. -10*C/14*F.  It is not going to get too much warmer today either. I am not sure if any snow is expected today, but I know there will be some tomorrow. We have been blessed this Winter in that we have not had tons of snow dumped on us at any given time. They have plowed our street, but have only employed some young lads with shovels to do our driveways, not snow blowers as in previous years.

Yesterday Cindy and I took a trip out to pick up some cat food at the Vets and we noticed that the pond in the next town over from us has frozen. They were clearing it for skating. There is only a short time each winter that that is so.  They keep a sign there to let people know if it is safe or not.  Green, you can skate. Red, you cannot.

It has been many, many years since I have donned a pair of skates.

I got a lovely letter in the post yesterday, all the way from Greece, from my friend Tatiana. I was trying to remember how long it has been that I have known Tatiana and it is at least from my years when I was working at the Manor, and I finished there in 2010.  At least three or four years before that.  So, we have been friends for almost 20 years now.  The card she enclosed was really delightful. She knows the things that bring my heart joy.  Her handwriting is impeccable. It is always so nice to get a surprise letter like that in the post. It really made my day.

I had been going to try to get a video done yesterday but when the opportunity presented itself for me to go out with Cindy I jumped at the chance.  I would rather spend time with her than to do anything else. And in the Winter months with the roads being iffy much of the time, this was a real treat. We got the cat food at the Vets, and we went to the Super Store to pick up a few bits.  They had their really expensive whole chickens marked down by 50% because they were on the sell by date, so we each picked up one of those. I planned on cutting mine into pieces and cooking a couple yesterday so I could share some with Sheila and freezing the rest.

We could not resist stopping at Spurrs Farm Market.  They make their chocolate donuts on Fridays and Cindy wanted to get some of those. I had never had their chocolate donuts before, so I got some as well. I thought I could share some of those with Sheila also.

I cooked a simple supper of some chicken legs in shake and bake, some scalloped potatoes, yellow beans and then I took half of it over to Sheila along with several chocolate donuts.  She was really pleased.  I think sharing food with and cooking for others is my love language.

So maybe I will get a video done today.

I had ordered some fabrics on sale from one of my favorite online-fabric-shops and they came this week. I have in mind to make some new throw cushion covers for my sofa. I was very pleased with my choices.

This is the style of cushion covers I would like to make, where you have one fabric on the outside and then another for the enclosures and ties.  I had watched the girl on Olesya and House making some on YouTube and thought I could do that. They are really quite straight forward.

Now all I have to do is find the time. I think they are a simple project which could be done in an afternoon.

I started watching a new program on my BritBox last night. "Captivated. " It stars the fellow who played Tom Branson on Downton Abby. It is a thriller, and I do so love a thriller.  I am also keeping up with the latest series of Shetland on there.  Plus, All Creatures Great and Small on Prime and a new one called Missing, on Acorn.

I don't watch the regular television at all these days.  There is just nothing on there that I am interested in and all of the good stuff is on too late (I am an early to bedder.) so I prefer to stream. Its what works for me.

Also did you know that there are all kinds of old black and white films available on YouTube?  Old television shows as well.

We live in strange times, a bit of escapism is not a bad thing.

I had to laugh this morning.  Someone had left this comment on my latest recipe:  "Looks like it would go good with Hot Dogs and Sauerkraut." I am not sure what the intent is behind it. I put it into the garbage bin. I think it was meant to be sarcastic. There is a person who leaves sarcastic and sometimes even nasty comments on blogs.  I am not sure why. Always anonymous of course. It is easy to be a jack*** under the cloak of anonymity.  What a sad, sad life this person must have that they have cause to waste their time in such a way. It serves no purpose. I know a few other people this person leaves comments with, and the comments are never helpful or nice. They always take digs at the content posted. Sad, sad puppy. You really need to seek help for your malaise. You are sick. Normal, mentally healthy people don't spend their time doing things like this. I mention this only so that you can be inspired to get the help you really need to get.

Does this face say I love you?

How about this one, a few seconds later??
Nutmeg, you are such a ham.

Begging belly scratches as Cinnamon plays with her pipe cleaners.
(Don't worry. I keep them locked up and
she only gets them under
supervision.)

There is a talent show/afternoon planned at the chapel this afternoon between 2 and 4 pm.  I am not sure if I will go or not. I have work to do today and I want to get a video done.  I don't really have any talents to share either, although it would be nice to see other people's talents.  Apparently, Jacqueline can talk like Donald Duck. If I can get my work done before then I might go. We shall see.

I slept a bit better last night. I did not take the second Metformin and was able to sleep the whole night through without waking up with excessive thirst and perspiring. I am not sure how to get around that.  Should I take two in the morning rather than one in the morning and one at night?  How do other people take them?  Just wondering.

And with that I best end this off now and get cracking on the remainder of my day.

New England Spider Cake

In The English Kitchen today, a small batch recipe for New England Spider Cake.  This is a type of sweet cornbread baked in a cast iron skillet. It has a creamy custard filling that bakes in simply.  Delicious served warm for breakfast!

Dear Neighbor . . .

 3 ESTATE LANE, NS
-8*C feels like -18*C
(19*F feels like 0.4*F)

Dear Neighbor,

There is a definite chill in the air. We are enjoying some of the coldest days so far of the winter. We have had snow off and on for the past week, which I really don't mind all that much.  Big goose down flakes at times. Those are the ones I love most of all.  I have ventured out a few times, but mostly I have been contented to just stay at home.  That is one of the benefits of keeping a good store cupboard of food, etc. If I don't need to go out, I don't have to go out. I can just stay here, warm and cozy. What a great blessing that is. I do not take my home for granted. I recognize it as one of the tender mercies of the Lord.

The pipe to my shower broke the other day. Snapped right off. Can you believe that it was made from plastic?  I know!  How shoddy.  I called the maintenance guy, and he came right over, went out and got a replacement pipe (metal this time) and everything was in working order in less than a couple of hours. Another tender mercy. My life is filled with them.

This was me, most of the day, yesterday. I was so very tired. I did get some work done, and I got the vacuuming done, but most of the day I only wanted to sleep.  I found myself sitting down to have a short nap in the afternoon and then I ended up spending 2 hours in the chair dozing off and waking up and dozing off again.  This, after having slept in until 7 a.m.  Last night I slept again, and woke up about 1 a.m. just perspiring, with a very dry mouth. It took me quite some time to get back to sleep, but I did eventually and woke up again at 7 a.m. I have had a medication change this week and I do not think it was for the best.

I have been taking one metformin pill a day since about 2016, without any problems at all. My sugars stay static, etc. This new Doctor of mine says that that is the dose they start people on and that it is meant to be more and so he not only doubled it but quadrupled it to four a day.  I have only taken 2 a day for two days and am not liking the results.  I do not like to question a doctor's authority, but I do think that an increase was not really required.  What to do, what to do . . .

It is hard to know what the right thing is. I am going to try only taking one today and see if that makes a difference.

I had hoped to do a video yesterday but was too tired.  Perhaps I will get one done today.  I have not been as consistent in doing them as I had planned to be.  I had originally planned on doing one to two a week, but that hasn't happened. I do enjoy making them.  I just struggle sometimes with coming up with ideas.  I do wish I knew how to splice more than one video together as that would change up the things I could do for them. It is hard to come up with things you can just get done within a certain time frame, without making people wait for ages for whatever you have cooked to finish cooking.  And how to fill in the waiting time. That is hard also.

I watch other people's videos, and they all seem to be so seamless. I know comparison is the thief of joy and I try hard not to compare with others. I do have my own unique qualities. I will just have to keep practicing.

My friend from church Elizabeth wants me to make some British pancakes, which I could certainly do.  They don't come without a modicum of risk however.  The first few can always be quite difficult. They are more like crepes than pancakes.  Another friend wants me to make soda bread, but then there is the waiting period for it to be done. Of course I could have one already prepared. But then I end up with two soda breads. I can give one to my next-door neighbor I know, but having to make two of things is not practical, not expense wise, etc.

I will work something out.  I usually do.

I would like to begin another embroidery project. I do so enjoy embroidery.  I also want to make doll clothes and dolls, and I want to paint. There are so many things I would like to do.  My time just seems to disappear into thin air. One day no sooner starts and it is finishing. Of course, not getting up until 7 a.m. is not helping, ha-ha. It was not so long ago that I was getting up at 5 a.m.

I have books that I want to read as well.  I took Linda's advice and sent for a trial copy of The Senior Paper. I am really enjoying it.  So much so that I have subscribed to it for a year. I am sure that Sheila will enjoy reading my copy of it after I have finished as well, or maybe even Cindy.  I will have to ask her first.

One thing which I enjoy about it is that the articles and stories in it are not overly long. If I have a few minutes, I can just sit down and have a quick read. And they are making me smile. A lot of them are reminisces that people send it of things which have happened in their lives, childhoods, etc. Canadian as well, so I can relate to a lot of them.

It is a great little form of escapism and pleasure. Thank you, Linda, for suggesting it!

We have had some more snow fall during the night. Everything is covered with a fresh new dusting. I don't mind.  The first winter I was in this house we had so much snow that I could not see across the road. They were bringing in a snow blower to clear the driveways. This year they are just using two guys with shovels and a truck does up the street.

Yesterday Sheila came knocking on my door. She always picks up the mail for the man across the way.  He had a key for a parcel box, and she couldn't get it to work.  She wondered if I could help her. I was happy to.  They were slightly frozen shut, but I managed to get it open for her.  I needed to check my own mail anyways, and it really wasn't any trouble to help her out.

I would have been happy to help her out anyways.  That is what a good neighbor does.  I fear she is very lonely.  Nobody on the street, except for myself and Glenna have much to do with her.  I think it might be because she can be a bit of a negative Nelly.  Always complaining about how different things are these days compared to the old days.  I just take it all with a grain of salt.

She watches the news a lot and that would scare anyone.  I avoid the news as much as possible. If that makes me un-informed, then I am happy to be so. I do keep up with the headlines, but I choose not to dwell on any of it, if possible.

I have always been a great lover of the classics.  I believe this goes back to my childhood. One thing which our parents purchased early on in our home was an encyclopedia. It came with extra volumes of books. There was a set of Geography books, which I thoroughly enjoyed and there was a set of abridgements of many great novels. I got my first introduction to classic literature through them. This was where I first read Lewis Carol's "Alice in Wonderland" and Walt Whitman's "Leaves of Grass." There were a great many others as well. Of course, they were abridgements and not the full novels, but I did enjoy them.  Moby Dick. Great Expectations, etc. They were a wonderful introduction to great literature.

I still love the classics.  I need to make a more pro-active choice to revisit some of them again. I think of all of them I did enjoy Jane Eyre the most.  And next to that Sense and Sensibility.  Or course we have films today that we can watch in their place. I have my favorite versions of them as well.

I will forever love the Little Women film which came out in the 1990's with Winona Ryder as Jo. To me that is a must watch every holiday season. My favorite Jane Eyre is the one made in 2011 with Mia Wasikowska & Michael Fassbender.

Are you a fan of the messy hair?  I like to see it . . .  on other people . . . but when it comes to me, I don't like it and can't stand it.  And I have messy hair anyways. I have tried to do messy buns, but they never feel okay with me.  I always feel messy and unkempt. It is the same with the messy braid.

I find as I have gotten older, I have all of these fly away hairs at the front and sides of my head that drive me crazy. They stick out all over the place and I cannot tame them, but neither do I want really short hair, so I have learned to live with them.

I notice a big thing with younger women, especially women who are black or middle eastern, are these very sculpted edges on the forehead.  That looks exceptionally nice on them. It would look ridiculous on me.  The very thought of it makes me laugh.

I am afraid I am just stuck with what I have and who I am.  Oh, I admire women like Diane Schiffer who can style themselves retro. That is something I would love to be able to do, but I am sure it takes a lot of time to get that natural retro-look and that is something which I do not have a lot of.

And speaking of time I need to bring this missive to a close now. It is gone past 9:30 and I have miles to walk before I sleep. Getting up at 7 a.m. has made a profound difference it seems. I am an hour later in doing everything!

Hot Dogs and Sauerkraut

I will probably hear about these not being very healthy, but the recipe I am sharing in the English Kitchen today is for Hot Dogs and Sauerkraut. Healthy nor not, it is delicious. I enjoyed with a bit of raw onion and some honey mustard.  I was a very happy camper.  (All beef hot dogs.)

I hope that you have a wonderful day ahead of you. I hope that you are warm and happy, healthy and content.  Blessed.  Whatever you get up to, don't forget!
