Yesterday . . .

Cindy and I went on an impromptu road trip yesterday.  I did do a video of it, but blogger says it is too large to put on here, so there you go.  We wanted to go and check out the Cemetery while the leaves were changing colors and see how mom's plot was doing.

As you can see it was a rather cloudy day, but in between the clouds beautiful blue sky was showing. You can see the North Mountain in the background, but not much leaf color was showing. The really reds have not yet begun to make their presence known.

We usually check on all of the graves, not just mom's.  John's was looking fine. He was our younger cousin who died a number of years back.  He was our Aunt Freda's youngest son.

Aunt Freda's grave was looking well. We could see that her great granddaughter Odessa (our cousin) had left her rock that she painted at the  paint night for her, which was lovely. Odessa was our maternal grandmother's second name.

We checked out Abel Beals, who was one of our earlier ancestors, and his wife's grave.  We checked out a lot of them actually.  All were in good repair. There was a lady there from Toronto cleaning up some gravestones of her ancestors. We had a lovely chat with her about genealogy, etc. It was quite interesting.  I think women are more interested in genealogy than men perhaps, but I could be wrong.

I think there is probably something inside each of us that longs to know more about our roots.

We then went up the mountain to check out some other things. This was the first school that my mother ever went to.  I have a photograph actually of our grandmother standing in front of it with her school mates, which dates back to the early 1900's.

Our Aunt Freda's funeral was at the church which is just next to this building and there were so many people at our Aunt's funeral that they had to open up this old school house with a video relay for the overflow.  Our Aunt Freda was that loved by many, many people.

We then went to go to our maternal Great Grandparent's farm.  I have shown you it before.  This is the house that our mother was born in.  Mom and her sister Thelma used to sit on that front porch looking out over the valley below, scraping pieces of turnip with a spoon as a snack and treat.

This was so beautiful a farm, that people wanted to get married here and hold their wedding receptions here beneath the beauty of the orchards.  It was a successful farm as well, with orchards, sheep, dairy cows, etc.

Our mother had so many lovely memories of this beautiful (once upon a time) place.  It had largely become derelict, but we loved to go there and see it and think about, speak about, all the stories mom had shared with us through the years of her time spent living on this farm when she was a child.

It was gone.

Imagine our distress at discovering it was gone.  There was nothing there but charred trees . . .

Charred ground and leftovers that had not quite been totally incinerated.  There had been a fire.  And it was just gone  . . .

We don't know how or why or when.  Sometime over the summer we assume.  We were last there I believe in November or so of last year.

It was quite upsetting to see. We know that mom would have been totally heartbroken to see it gone, and we were as well.

The outbuildings are still there. That is only how we were able to recognize that we were at the right place.

We then went to the church/cemetery just below town to find our ancestor Brigadier General  Timothy Dwight Ruggles grave. We had been saying we were going to do this for four years now and we finally did.

He has quite an interesting history which you can read about on Wikipedia, and is the ancestor that I have in common with my friend Glenna who lives across the road from me.

We also checked out the plaque that was erected to him at the park in our town. Well, him and a few others.  We had not checked out that before either.

So it was quite a family history type of a day. I think we were out for at least three hours. We will need to try to find out now what happened to our great grandparent's house. I am sure someone somewhere will be able to tell us.   Was it an accident?  Was it on purpose?  We will find out  . . .

Cindy had always said if she won the lottery she was going to buy the property and restore the house to its grander days. I remember being inside the house a few times with our mother when she went to visit her cousin Florence Ruggles there.  As I recall, you stepped down into the kitchen from the back porch room.

So that was our day/adventure yesterday.  The rest of the day was quite uneventful.  I did get to talk to Douglas after his procedure.  They decided that there was nothing untoward about his stent and have just switched his meds again. They said it if got worse then he could come back and they would replace it.  But there is only a 50% blockage at this point and that they generally don't do anything unless it is at 70%.  So they are driving back to the Island today. Well his father in law is driving as Doug is not allowed to drive for several days. He said he was going to have a nice breakfast this morning as he had not been allowed to have anything yesterday morning.

The girl is coming later this morning, about 9:30-ish to do my gardens and clean them up for the Winter.  That reminds me, I need to call for an appointment to get my snow tires put back on the car.  It doesn't seem like it has been long since I had them taken off!  Time is just a flying!

I am going to finish clearing out the fridge today. I wonder what other surprises I will find!  The mind boggles.  My friend from church Eileen calls it the walk of shame.  LOL  She, too, lives on her own. She knows just what I am talking about. We all experience it. It is certainly a learning curve, this learning to live on your own.  This trying to change the habits of so many years of having a large family, etc. to buy for and feed.  You would think that it wouldn't be much different than buying and cooking for two.  But it really is in a strange way.  Any how that's my chore for today.

I best get going now and so will leave you with a thought for today  . . .

Honey Bun Cake

In the Kitchen Today, Honey Bun Cake. The small batch. A lovely 8 inch vanilla cake, with a cinnamon pecan brown sugar swirl and a sweet glaze. This is simply delicious and a very easy make.

I hope that you have a beautiful day today.  You know, you all really do make a huge difference to my life.  I know that there are not as many of you as there used to be, and you are largely silent. That is perfectly fine.  I still know you are there, and it is such a fine thing that I have someone to share my ponderings with.  I am always grateful for your listening ears. I appreciate you, I truly do. Whatever you get up to today, don't forget!

Wednesday Witterings . . .

I didn't sleep very well last night. Some nights are just like that.  I think I did not fall asleep until after 3 a.m. At least that was the last time I checked the time. Up to that point I had only been sleep surfing, if you know what I mean.  Asleep, but not really asleep. Tossing and turning. Not really clicking over into la la land. I hate nights like that.

And it is not as if I wasn't particularly tired when I went to bed either. I was exhausted yesterday. I worked really hard and then started cleaning out my fridge. I only got the door done before I had had the biscuit. I will have to continue to work on it until I am finished, maybe one shelf at a time.

When you live on your own like I do, you end up with all kinds of partially used jars and containers of opened stuff in the refrigerator that ends up going out of date before you can use it all up. Periodically I need to go through my refrigerator and have a purge.  Its shameful really. I wish that they made smaller containers of things.

I remember thinking that everything was so small when I first moved over to the U.K. Most food stuffs came in really small containers compared to what I was used to, which only made sense to be honest. At that time, most people only had very tiny refrigerators in their homes. I can remember wishing that I could have much larger sizes of things.

Now I wish I could have much smaller sizes of things. Life has done a turn-around.

At one point when I was purging jars from my refrigerator door yesterday, I thought to myself, "You are turning into your mother." In mom's later years whenever we went home to visit we checked the date on everything in the refrigerator before we used it. She had salad dressing in there that was five years old, lol.  Maybe even longer.  If I had bought a jar of something one time when I had visited and hadn't used it all up, it was sitting there waiting for me the next time I came home. I have sprinkled brown Parmesan on my pasta because I did not want to hurt her feelings.

As I worked yesterday I began to understand why or at least how she ended up with so many things that were out of date. When you live on your own, it is almost impossible to use everything up.  And that is shameful, or at least it makes you feel ashamed.  Especially if you hate waste.

After seeing what got thrown away from just the door, I am dreading seeing what is going to be thrown from the shelves. To be honest this is the first time I have done a full scale purge like this in a while so it is bound to be bad. 😧

Again, I wish they made much smaller sizes of things.

Yesterday I cooked myself a "British" sausage for my dinner along with some roasted potatoes, squash and carrots.  I had picked up these sausages on Cindy's and my recent Farm Market haul. I had high expectations of them.  British bangers are something I love and really miss from the U.K. They had some of the most delicious sausages over there that I have ever eaten.  So, yes I had high expectations of these sausages.

Expectations so high that I was bound to be disappointed . . .  and I was.  Not only did the sausage not have much flavor, but it was dry.  Dry as a bone. There was no meaty succulence, no fatty juices . . . it was solid and had no give.  The skin did not snap like it should have done.  I ran to get some mustard, anything  . . .  to dip it in, but alas, almost all of my sauces had been purged from the fridge door and down the drain.

Alas . . .  something else I could not bring myself to finish.  The sausage, and  . . .  I have the rest of the package and another one still in my freezer.  Woe is me.

Shame on me and my predilection for being a great hunter-gatherer. It is never enough for me to buy just one of some things  . . .  like packages of "British" sausages  . . .  I have to buy two. Why?  Because I might never see them again and regret not having done so.

Cindy and I are going to take a trip down to the Cemetery later this morning to check on mom's grave and take a few photos of the changing leaves from that perspective. It is right at the base, the foothills as it were, of the South Mountain and there is a spectacular view.  Afterwards we plan to drive up to the old farm higher up the mountain and take a few photos there.

We have a really long family history in this valley. Both the North and the South mountains that cradle our little valley used to be known as Ruggles Mountain and Beals Mountain, respectively. Named after two of our illustrious ancestors.  Brigadier General Timothy Dwight Ruggles, and Abel Beals.

Now, after several hundred years, they are just the North and the South mountains. There is a plaque in our town park devoted to BG Ruggles, and he is buried at the old cemetery just at the far western edge of town, so we are going to check that out as well. We have been saying we will do so for a long time and I think today we are going to do it.

I am sure that the Mi'kmaq, who were here before any of us, had  very different names for these places, and they were probably a lot more interestingly based on folklore.

I have been watching the Whitney Houston film on Netflix. (I know.  I tend to watch these things in spurts. Half an hour here and there.  I am seldom able to sit down long enough to watch a whole film all the way through, unless its really REALLY good!)  Her life is a bit depressing I think. Or is that just me?

I recently started watching these two Germans on YouTube. Kirsten and Joerg.  Two Germans in Britain.  I find their channel so interesting. They do a lot of decorating/home/cooking/travel videos.  They mostly stay in cozy cottages on their travels. Sometimes they take us shopping with them.  I just find these little glimpses into their lives really fascinating and entertaining.

"Our YouTube channel offers escapism and hopefully also gives you some ideas which places to visit here in beautiful Britain. We love staying at romantic places that offer the whole package: A gorgeous setting combined with the wonderful classic English interior. We love sharing the odd recipe as well, shopping trips & our house that we are still renovating! Never stop dreaming!"

I love watching videos about how other people live. I have always been a people watcher.  That is why I have never minded waiting around for people to finish what they are doing. I have always been quite content to just sit and watch people walking about, going about their business, moving to and froe.

I find myself wondering about them. Everybody has a story and I am sure that some of them are very interesting.  And watching people on YouTube is a bit like that.  Watching people and listening to their stories, learning of their interests, etc.

I can't help myself, I just fall down the rabbit hole, but quite happily so.  I don't really have anyone here in my house to talk to and so I watch YouTube, or listen to music, etc.  I don't mind not having someone to talk to or have conversations with actually.  I quite like living on my own for the most part. I don't get lonely. I can always find something to fill my time with and I do talk to my cats.  And sometimes they even talk back.

Sometimes they talk back too much.  But I cannot complain. They are good company.

And somehow we are finding ourselves at the end of September. Only five more days and we will be in to October.  Hasn't this year just flown by?  I cannot believe how quickly it is slipping off the calendar.  Is it just me, or is the same for all of you as well?   Somehow I wish that time would slow down. All I can do really is to try to get the best and the most out of every day.

I had a message from Douglas last night. He has had his first appointment at the hospital. The Doctor is saying/hinting that the stent he got  several years ago might not have been large enough, so today he is going for the cardiac catheterization assessment.  I am praying for good news, and I know you are as well. I will keep you posted as he keeps me posted.

And with that I best leave you with a thought for the day  . . .

Cheesy Sweet Corn Casserole

In the kitchen today, Cheesy Sweet Corn Casserole. I made the casserole that my sister had made on Sunday, but in a small batch recipe. It turned out delicious.  I highly recommend!

I hope that you have a beautiful day filled with good things and the people that you love.  May your day be filled to overflowing with tender mercies and blessings.  Don't forget!

A Day Book . . .

FOR TODAY, September 24th, 2024

OUTSIDE MY WINDOW ...

I thought I would show you the brilliance of the trees behind the houses across the way from me.  And they are not finished yet. There is more to come.  Oh how I love the brilliant colors we are treated to at this time of year. So beautiful.

I have taken down my hummingbird feeder now.  I have not seen any for a couple of weeks and my sister hasn't seen any at her runner bean flowers either.  I think it is safe now.

I AM THINKING ...

Last night in bed before I went to sleep I was listening to some of the new additions to my church's hymn book.  They recently added a list of new hymns to the book and they are all lovely.  I know I am a bit biased.  The words  . . . the music, they have a wonderful way of calming the heart and soothing the soul.

Day by day, God's gracious love surrounds me
As a balm to soothe my troubled heart.
Countless cares and worried that confound me
Fade away or quietly depart,
For His heart is kind beyond measure,
And He comfort us as He knows best.
Ev'ry day, with all its pain and pleasure,
Mingles tears with peace and rest.
~God's Gracious Love, Hymn 1013

There are worse things to fall asleep thinking about.  This is a wonderful way to do it.  They can be found here, and you can listen to them being sung along with the music.

I  AM ALSO THINKING ...

I have set the Lord always before me.
Because He is at my right hand I will not be shaken.
~Psalm 16:8

Live first and foremost in My presence.  Gradually you will become more aware of Me than of people and places around you. This awareness will not detract from your relationships with others. Instead it will increase your ability to give love and encouragement to them. My Peace will permeate your words and demeanor. You will be active in the world, yet one step removed from it. You will not be easily shaken because My enveloping Presence buffers the blow of problems. (Sept 24th,  Jesus Calling, enjoying peace in His presence, by Sarah Young)

Walking hand in hand with the Lord is my secret to a peaceful life filled with abundance. That doesn't mean that I don't sometimes stumble.  I am only human after all  . . .

Crockpot Fire Roasted Tomato & White Bean Soup

IN THE KITCHEN ...

Crockpot Fire Roasted Tomato and White Bean Soup. This was really, really good.  Simple to make and delicious. I popped it into the crockpot before I went out yesterday for my blood tests and to the store with Cindy. It smelled fabulous when I got home and a delicious dinner was waiting for me. I took a pot of it over to Sheila next door along with a couple Sweet Potato Biscuits.  I sat on the porch talking with her for a few minutes.  She seemed to enjoy the time I spent with her. I know she gets lonely and misses her late husband very much. It did not take much effort on my part to spend some time with her.

ON MY "TO COOK" LIST  ...

Kitchen Divas, Cheesy Cornbread Casserole. My sister made this on Sunday and it was delicious!  I want to try cutting the recipe in half.

LOOKING FORWARD TO ...

Getting into the kitchen later on and seeing what happens. The kitchen is my happy place.

REMEMBERING ...

This was my Douglas when he was about six months old. He always had such a charming smile and pleasant demeanor when he was a child.  Today he leaves for NB for his dye test tomorrow.  I hope and pray that the Doctor will be able to find out what the problem is and be able to sort it.  He will be 43 in November. He is a good, good man. A good husband, father and son. I love him very much and want only good things for him.  For all my children.  Praying that all will be well for this son of mine.

SOMETHING NICE ...

Soon, soon the wild geese shall be flying overhead. The night before I left the U.K. to come back to Canada a flock of wild geese flew over as I was in the front of my wee house bidding farewell to Tina and Tony. I knew then that I was making the right decision. It was like the best sign ever. My life has been richly embroidered by the flight of wild geese as they fly south for the Winter. It has marked all of my years.  The sound of them always strikes my heart in a special way.

I KNOW THIS TO BE TRUE ...

“Learn of me, and listen to my words;
walk in the meekness of my Spirit,
and you shall have peace in me”
~D&C 19:23

Excessive worry never added a whit of peace or joy to anyone's life.

I AM WANTING TO CREATE ...

I dug this pattern out of my stash a few days back. I have been wanting to make one for a while now. I picked up some fabrics yesterday. We will see how it goes.  I love this rabbit doll.

Love this combination of pillows. My sister picked up some of this same checked fabric yesterday. Perhaps I need to go and get me some?

Loving this combination also. Is it the bobble trim?  I don't know.  Probably, but I also love the combination of fabrics.

I love this little pleated lamp shade. I don't think it would be difficult to make one.

I love this embroidered picture.

OH MY GOODNESS ...

Cinnamon was making biscuits on my lap last night, as she sang me a sweet, sweet song of peace and happiness.   I love her little ear hairs.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE ...

Lord of the Manor, Sir Nutmeg of Estate Lane.  Sitting on his throne. He is almost too big for it, but that doesn't stop him from perching there.

I don't know how Lady Cinnamon could possibly be comfortable laying like this either, but somehow . . .  she is.

They make me happy and fill my home with joy.

I AM READING ...

Everyman's England, by Victor Canning

A classic travelogue that brilliantly conjures 1930s Britain. In this series of pen-portraits of England from the 1930s, Victor Canning ‘evocatively captures the pattern and color of English life’ (The Bookseller), from Cumbria to Cornwall. Canning’s heart-warming and humorous observations of sleepy villages, pastoral scenes and busy industries are a delightful time capsule into life in England during the interwar years. ‘What does the word England mean to you? To all of us England means something different, and yet I think there is for every man and woman some little corner which is more England than anywhere else…’

It is an entertaining and fascinating read.

"It was at this inn that I got, for a ridiculously small sum, a lunch which more than ever endeared me to Wharfedale, for after a man has had a morning full of beauty there is no better cap to it than a lunch which in itself is a thing of beauty. There was a rich, dark soup which was not only hot, but full of the flavour of vegetables, then turkey with thyme and parsley stuffing, roast potatoes, Brussels sprouts, a fruit tart with a crust it was a shame to break and a joy to eat, a portion of Wensleydale cheese and a cup of as good a coffee as you could expect in England."

It is a re-read. I did read it a number of years back and recreated a meal that he had described in the book on my EK page.  It was delicious.  You can find that post here.

Small and Wonderful Things . . .

"The world is fairly studded and strewn with pennies cast broadside from a generous hand. But who gets excited by a mere penny? It is dire poverty indeed when a man is so malnourished and fatigued that he won't stoop to pick up a penny. But if you cultivate a healthy poverty and simplicity, so that finding a penny will literally make your day, then, since the world is in fact planted with pennies, you have with your poverty bought a lifetime of days. It is that simple. What you see is what you get." ~Anne Dillard

A few of the small and wonderful things which bring untold joy into my life. It's the small things in life which truly mean the most. Simple abundance . . . it's the best.

Hooray for autumn. It is officially here, and it is officially my favorite season!  I am excited for the sights, the smells, the feels, the tastes. I love, love, LOVE it all!

Yes, yes, yes, YES!  Its here!  And I am excited.

Boo Berry Hand Pies  . . .  so cute.  I would love to make these. Maybe if my grands come over for Thanksgiving  . . .

Warm socks . . .  sock season is here.  I go in my bare feet most of the year and only really wear socks in the autumn and winter.

Bed making helpers.  How would I ever do it without the help of this little lady. It just would not be the same.

I live in a safe place, on a safe street, in a safe neighborhood,  in a safe town, a safe province, a safe country.  I am blessed.

Friends. My sister, of course, is my best friend, but I am blessed to have some very good friends in my life.  I don't take any of them for granted and I appreciate each one of them.  They truly are flowers in the garden of my heart.

Grateful for prayers.  For the spoken and the unspoken silent prayers of my heart.  I tend to carry on a conversation with my Heavenly Father throughout all my waking hours. It is as integral to my life as are my arms, legs, brain and breath.  It has made a huge difference in the quality of my life.

My life is filled with joy and purpose. I am grateful for that.

I am grateful for my faith. I do not know where I would be without it. It helps and sustains me, guides me, upholds me.  It has taken me to lofty places I never would have gone otherwise.

Grateful for a free education which taught me from a very young age, how to read and do  and know a lot of things.  I used to love the Dick and Jane readers we had at school.

I am grateful for school, teachers, and organizations that helped to shape me and reinforce the values I was taught at home by goodly parents. They taught me well.

The joy I have always found in homemaking and keeping a home, raising my family, being where I found the most peace and contentment.  For others it is found in other places, and that's wonderful too. For me, it has always been in my home.

If I can never be or achieve anything else in this lifetime, let me always be known as having at least been kind.  I love that saying, "In a world where you can be anything you want to be, be kind."   Not everyone is, but the ones that are do make a difference. It is the people who have been the kindest in my life who have made the most difference and I have been blessed to have many kind people in my life.

Faith, family, friends, food  . . . love. My life and days are filled with an abundance of blessings  . . .  I can not ask for more than that.
