A Day Book . . .

FOR TODAY, December 2nd, 2025

OUTSIDE MY WINDOW ...

The calm before the storm. It is -8*C/17*F.  There is a snowfall warning in effect from this afternoon on until tomorrow afternoon. We will see how it goes. These things are often predicted and never materialize.

I AM THINKING ...

December has gotten off to a good start. Dad is home from the hospital. Everything is as it should be. My trip to the Doctors yesterday was very uneventful. Dan came and picked me up and dropped me off, and then Cindy came and picked me up afterwards and brought me home. I really appreciated their help. I did not want to bother them so had not asked. I ask too much of them I think, so I was just going to take a cab. They volunteered. I am so blessed to have such a good family around me.

I do have a handicap badge for my car, but there are only 2 spaces outside the clinic, and they are always taken. When I got there, they were taken and so were all of the other ones across the street.  I would have had to park in the back 40 to get a space. Impossible.

I AM ALSO THINKING ...

In an area where a great deal of the population is seniors and elderly, you would think that there would be more handicap parking available at the hospitals/clinics. But alas, it is the same everywhere. At Tim Hortons there is only one space. My sister went one day and this guy had his ride on lawn mower parked in it.  The RCMP also happened to be there, so she complained to them. The guy said he had a handicap badge, just didn't have it with him. Cindy said to the RCMP, I am pretty sure that the handicap sticker doesn't cover lawn mowers. Nobody did anything. Of course. And that guy is still parking his lawnmower in the handicap space. It's really not on.

I AM GRATEFUL FOR ...

My cozy little home. Especially with a big storm coming. I can sit in side and watch it from the window with a hot drink and a cozy blanket across my lap and my two furry family members by my side.

I AM READING ...

THE REED OF GOD, by Caryll Houselander

The Reed of God by Caryll Houselander, British Catholic writer and artist, has been cherished by Catholics worldwide since its first publication in 1944. This spiritual classic invites readers to encounter Mary, the Mother of God, not as a distant, untouchable figure but as deeply human―one whose openness to God made divine love visible in the world.

Caryll Houselander portrays Mary as a reed, hollow and open, through which God’s song could be played. With this powerful image, Houselander reveals how Mary gave her whole being to God’s plan and shows how we, too, can become instruments of divine love.

Years before the Second Vatican Council inspired renewed devotion to Mary, Houselander offered her own profound and approachable vision of the Mother of God―warm, intuitive, and accessible. She counters the stiff, idealized “Madonna of the Christmas card” with a portrait of Mary that is alive, intimate, and profoundly relevant for Christians seeking closeness with Christ. Drawing from centuries of theological tradition yet enriched by her keen understanding of the human condition and the modern hunger for meaning, Houselander gives flesh and spirit to the Church’s affirmations about Mary and presents her as a figure designed for contemplation and imitation.

Through essays and poems, divided into four parts, Houselander reflects on the mysteries of Mary’s life―her fiat, the finding of Jesus in the Temple, her assumption―and on themes of emptiness, fruitfulness, and the soul’s longing for union with God. In Mary’s humanity, Houselander finds the model for every believer: to carry Christ into the world.

As Houselander writes, “The one thing that she did and does is the one thing that we all have to do, namely, to bear Christ into the world. To this need, the imitation of Our Lady is the answer; in contemplating her we find intimacy with God, the law which is the lovely yoke of the one irresistible love.” Mary was the reed through which Eternal Love was piped as a shepherd’s song.

The question remains for us: Are we reed pipes? Is God waiting to live lyrically through us?

I am reading this for Advent.

  1. I must make your Parsnip and Potato Mash, Marie. I’ve made Cauliflower and Potato Mash so would like to try the mash with parsnips. Hope they are wrong about the storm. Stay safe and cozy. Love and hugs, Elaine
