Wednesday Witterings . . .

I am really loving these cooler nights and days. I have never been one to wallow in the heat and humidity of summer. I know some people love that and that's okay. Me, I am an autumn girl.  In just 12 days, on the 22nd of September we will officially be in Autumn and I am all in!

The leaves here in Nova Scotia started to change a lot earlier this year because of the drought, but from now on we will start to see things changing more and more with each day that passes. I am getting the hunkering for cozying down.  And I am not the only one. Many of us are leaning into the change that's in the air.

Especially now that they seem to be getting a handle on the wildfires.  That's a blessing and a relief!  I am so grateful for all of the firefighters, etc. who have been working so tirelessly for about a month now!

They take their time and wander, on this,
their only chance to soar"

I was watching Cherry Menlove yesterday and she was talking about having a signature style. It made me think. Do I have a signature style?  I don't think that I do.  I have never been able to afford to be stylish or to clothe myself according to fashion dictates. I have only ever been able to afford cheap and wearable. I tend to find something I like, that is comfortable, and then I wear it for years and years.  I have been wearing the same trousers now for at least ten years.  I do need to think about getting new ones, but all I can seem to find is leggings and I don't do leggings. So I guess if that is a signature style then it's mine. The No Legging Signature Style.

I tend to wear elastic waisted trousers without pockets and loose t-shirts. I don't like anything tight or constraining. And I like my t-shirts on the longish side. To hide a multitude of sins, that everybody knows are there . . .  who am I fooling . . . but still, they are a comfortable wear, these long t-shirts.

So I guess that is my signature style. Fat lady comfort.  ha ha

But inside me the thin woman wishes it were something else.

Remembering these apples that we buy every autumn and hoping that they have made it through the drought. For the life of me I cannot remember their name. (It will probably come to me in the wee hours of the morning.) They have the nicest flavor and make the most delicious ruby hued applesauce. I just remembered their name.  Sweet Tart. Here is a tutorial my sister and I did on canning your own applesauce last year. I still have a jar or two to eat. I guess I better get them eaten up now, ready to make a fresh batch for this year!

They really do make the most beautiful applesauce and the most delicious also! We both love them.  And, they sell out really quickly when they start selling them. Probably more towards the end of the month.

I am really looking forward to Winter Squash season as well. There is so much to love about this time of year.

I went over to Cindy's yesterday and made Ghee for the first time. It was not all that hard to make and it is quite a lot cheaper to make your own. I will be putting a tutorial on the food blog. This is a photo I took of it before it solidified afterwards.

The best part was doing it with my sister.  We were scraping out the batter bowl we had strained it into with bites of her homemade Cranberry and Rosemary Easy Bread. Another delicious recipe I am going to have to try out for the blog. I have made regular easy bread before. When I was still living in the U.K.  I want to be totally rid of the gnats before I attempt the Cranberry and Rosemary version. I don't want them ending up in my bread dough, especially where you have to leave it sitting overnight to ferment. They would be quite attracted to the smell of the yeast and the fermentation.

Yes, I am still battling gnats. I should be able to pick up that light later today that my cousin ordered for me at Home Hardware here in town. (She works there.)

Nice also yesterday was to get to spend some time with dad chatting at the dining room table after we had finished making the ghee.  He said that it made him really happy to see his girls enjoying time together and being such good friends. I told him it makes me happy to see him happy, and also to have my sister as my best friend. It has been ever so. I love them both dearly and I love to spend time with them.

The guy is here this morning detailing my car.  It badly needed doing. I haven't had it cleaned inside and out since 2023. I have taken it through the car wash a few times, but not had it hoovered, etc. at all. I can't wait to see how clean it is afterwards.

He has done every car on this street now, pretty much. He does an excellent job and I like that he comes to your house to do it.  The last time I had it done I had to take it to the dealer and leave it all day. I think they finally got around to doing it late in the afternoon, even though I had a 9 a.m. appointment. I wasn't impressed. I always thought 9 a.m. meant 9 a.m.  Apparently, it did not to them.

Bonus, last night when I was cleaning out my glove compartment, I found my Cath Kidston pompom tie knitted gloves. I had wondered where I had put them. These are the gloves that I love so much I am scared to wear them as I know I will never be able to get a pair again and I don't want to lose them.

I now need to make an appointment to have my car safety done next month and I am thinking I might as well have the car winterized and get my snow tires put on at the same time.

I did not see the female hummingbirds at all yesterday, but that doesn't mean anything. They are not a the feeder as frequently as they were, but where the males are now gone on their migration, it is possible that the females have now left as well.

Those Guinea Hens were here several times yesterday. They are such funny creatures. I really am surprised that none of them have been hit by a car crossing that busy road that runs along next to ours. I saw cars slowing down to let them cross yesterday, but all it will take is a driver who is not paying attention.

I think they got into a ruckus with someone across the other way yesterday afternoon as well as I heard them making quite a racket. I have no idea who these birds belong to. I doubt that it is anyone who actually lives on these two streets as I don't think the Landlord would approve of such.  So, it is probably someone behind our streets. Whoever, they sure get around and nobody seems to come looking for them.

And with that I best get started on the rest of my day. I have miles to go before I sleep!

A thought to carry with you . . .
