A Day Book . . .

FOR TODAY, April 15th, 2025

OUTSIDE MY WINDOW ...

There is not a lot going on. Its dry and partially sunny. Garbage day and the bin men were here at 7 a.m. Happy I got mine out last night. You never know when they are going to come. It could be at early as this or it could be the middle of the afternoon.

I AM THINKING ...

"If someone can ruin your day, mood, vibe, or mental peace,
you are giving them too much power.
Pull yourself together and remember who you are."

This is so true. Other people have been living rent free in my head for far too long. Time to kick them out.

I AM ALSO THINKING ...

Yesterday I went to throw some bread out to the birds.  I always shut the back bedroom door before I do this.  As I was throwing it out, Cinnamon dashed between my legs and was out the door and on the patio in a nano second. Thankfully I was able to grab her and get her back in the house pronto. The little  minx must have been hiding under the bed. This has always been my greatest fear, that one of the get out.  There are coyotes around here. a lady one street over lost her cat to them. I would be devastated should anything happen to either one of my babies.

Butterscotch Self Saucing Pudding

IN THE KITCHEN ...

Butterscotch Self Saucing Pudding. The small batch. A great little dessert that goes together quickly and uses things you already have in the house.  Simple and delicious.  Especially with a dollop of thick cream on top.

ON MY 'TO COOK' LIST ...

Stirato Italian Bread. Moorland Eater.  An easy no knead bread.  Looks delicious!

our children teach us what life is all about."

I AM READING . . .

THE HEART OF WINTER,  by Jonathan Evison

Abe Winter and Ruth Warneke were never meant to be together—at least if you ask Ruth. Yet their catastrophic blind date in college evolved into a seventy-year marriage and a life on a farm on Bainbridge Island with their hens and beloved Labrador, Megs.

Through the years, the Winters have fallen in and out of lockstep, and from their haunting losses and guarded secrets, a dependable partnership has been forged. But when Ruth’s loose tooth turns out to be something much more malicious, the beautiful, reliable life they’ve created together comes to a crisis.

As Ruth struggles with her crumbling independence, Abe must learn how to take care of her while their three living children question his ability to look after his wife. And once again, the couple has to reconfigure how to be there for each other.

In this bighearted and profound portrait of a marriage, Jonathan Evison explores seventy years of big moments in subtle ways, elegantly braiding the Winters’ turbulent history with their present-day battles, showing us how the oddly paired college kids became parents, fell apart and back together, and grew into the Abe and Ruth of today.

Endlessly heartwarming and moving, The Heart of Winter is a reminder that true love lives in small, everyday moments.

I am thoroughly enjoying this.  It's probably one of the best books I have read this year. Seriously good.

  1. Hi, Marie! Lovely mix of bits here today. The bin men arrive here VERY early... 6am Monday mornings almost like clockwork. And they often wake me up before my alarm does--LOL! Good you were able to get Cinnamon (now BEAUTIFUL she is!) back inside. Kitties, they do like to sneak, don't they?! That Italian bread looks sooo good--yum! I've not baked bread in a long time. Even before the pandemic, I was doing sourdough. But lost my baking mojo--just too many loaves, I guess... haha! I love those old square-ish Beatrix Potter book... I wonder if they still make the books tiny like that? Those Dachshund pins are adorable--clever idea. And that photo of the dog and kitties is also, well--simple adorable! The Jane Austen books/image is lovely. I'm very much enjoying a Jane Austen reading project this year--soon finishing a re-read of Pride & Prejudice. Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret, was one of my fav books when I was around 12... they did a great job with the film adaptation--very sweet. Hope you have a lovely Holy Week as we look forward to Easter weekend! ((LOVE & HUGS))--Tracy

  2. Naughty Cinnamon, but she was just out the old saying that the grass is always greener on the other side. A day of showers on and off, the kind that pour down for a few minutes and then the sun comes out. then repeat several minutes later. Shopping done, and that feeling of when you walk though the door was lovely. Oldest daughter has 2 Dachshunds, adorable little dogs. Love the pins, must save it for later when I have more time to make things. Enjoy the day.

  3. Hi Marie, so scary for you that Cinnamon got out. She was probably as frightened as you were. So glad you were able to grab her. Is she and Nutmeg micro-chipped? I’m going to make your Butterscotch Pudding. Yum. Love and hugs, Elaine
