Wednesday witterings . . .

I love bread. There. I said it out loud.  I LOVE BREAD!  I guess I am a carbaholic because I also love pasta and potatoes. All carbs.  All things that I love and could not live without.  And I could quite happily enjoy all three together at the same time. I am not sure what that says about me really. I guess that I am a simple person with simple tastes, wants, needs?

My sister and I stopped at a small French Bakery in Kingston yesterday on our way to the Farmer's market. It's called Marie et Guy's.   Tis a very humble place with a wooden screen door. A warehouse actually.  Just one huge open room.  When you go in you often see Guy or Marie at work kneading dough or some such. It's just them. There are no workers. Not that I have ever seen.

But their bread is fabulous.  Everything they make is fabulous.  Their cabinets are filled with fresh baked daily breads and pastries, all made by hand with organic ingredients, and I can't help but make a pig of myself.  Yesterday I bought a sourdough baguette, a country loaf, four Breton cookies (with jam) a package of Biscotti and a Lemon Brioche bun.  And there's just me in my house.

Oh, I am so bad . . .

Guess what I had for lunch and supper.  I was going to have a bowl of chili with some bread for my supper, but I skipped the chili and just had butter and jam. And I was in heaven.  If it sounds better, I did have a salad for lunch. (And the lemon bun).  But to be fair, I had to eat the bun while it was still fresh, or it would have been a waste of money. 👀 I do hate waste. And I can't resist a good bun.

The Pierce Family Farm Market just the other side of Aylesford was our destination. They have about the widest array of Winter squash and pumpkins I have ever seen, and all very good quality.  It is just a small market. You walk inside and it smells just like a good farm market should smell this time of year. Like autumn and apples.  I picked up three kinds of squash.  A couple of sweet dumplings, a Hubbard and a larger one that I forget the name. I want to say kabocha, but I don't know for sure.  I could have quite happily bought one of each kind of squash they had just to try them out.

Funny that. When I was a child, I did not care for squash. Or maybe I just didn't care for the way my mother cooked it. It was always bland and watery.  As an adult I could sit down and eat a plate of it and nothing else at all and be quite happy.  My sister cooked some sweet dumplings on Sunday and they were soooooooooooooooooooooooooo delicious!  Just cooked and mashed, nothing added.  When something tastes that good in its natural state there is no need to add anything else. No salt. No butter. Nothing. Just the squash.

They had the best corn earlier this year.  I did imbibe.  In fact, I ate corn on the cob every chance I could. I guess I was making up for all those years in the UK and the fact that there was no good corn on the cob to be had there.  If a person could figure out how to grow good corn on the cob over there, they would make a fortune.  Any corn I ever had the misfortune to eat over there either came from Kenya or tasted like cow corn, which is what we call the corn here that is grown for animal feed.  It's not their fault.  Their climate is too wet.

The fields here are full of it now, cow corn . . .  turning yellow and brown and dry, ready to be mown down and popped into the corn cribs so that the animals have something to eat all Winter.

I wish I could bottle the smell of the apples in this farm market.  It was such a wonderful smell. If you ever get a chance to go to this market, I highly recommend. It's the best.

I can't believe that here we are already staring the face of October in the eye. It seems to have happened so fast. I was saying to my sister yesterday as we were driving down the road, looking at all the colors of the changing leaves, how quickly Autumn seems to have taken hold. She said, yes, it happened literally overnight. One day it was Summer and the next it was Autumn. It happens on the same day every year.  She does make me laugh.  I think being able to laugh is very good for the soul and adds years to your life.  Well, maybe not years, but . . .  you know what I mean, I am sure.

My mother was very superstitious.  She had a superstition for just about everything including spilling salt. If she saw one crow, she would pray to see another and another until good luck had returned. God forbid a bird should hit our window and die.  If you dropped a piece of cutlery you were going to get a visitor, the gender depending on the piece of cutlery you had dropped. Knives and spoons bring pantaloons, and forks bring gentle ladies. An itchy nose meant you were going to kiss a fool. An itchy palm meant money was due. You had to scratch it on wood to make sure that it was a tidy sum, or the money would be lost. If you put your clothing on inside-out, you had to wear it that way all day lest you invite bad luck into your life, etc.

We had a deck of cards in the house, but they were used for only one thing. Fortune telling. We were forbidden to touch them. Ever notice that an old deck of cards has a peculiar smell? They smell like every pair of hands that has ever touched them I suppose . . .

I used to love to open my father's top dresser drawer and sniff it. (Yes, I was a peculiar child.) It smelled like cork grease for his clarinet and leather from his wallet, and the butterscotch wafers he kept hidden there. He doesn't remember that, but it is clear in my mind.

It was forbidden for us to even go into our parents' bedroom so don't ask me why I was in there. I was probably en route to the open bags of potato chips that my mother kept hidden behind my father's dresser.  They were only to be eaten during Saturday night hockey games on the television. We would each be given a small (and I mean small) bowl of them. We used to sneak a chip or two when afforded the opportunity during the week.

I am sure my mother noticed them disappearing because we all did it, but if she did, she never said. My mother was very tight with the pennies. Nothing missed her observations. We were really only cheating ourselves because less in the bag meant less for Saturday night.  But I can attest to the fact that sneaky chips taste better than the regular ones.

Well, I am out for supper with my dad tonight and his two lady friends. I have a bit of puttering about to do here today. The sun is shining.  All is well. Tomorrow, I have to take my car to have it cleaned.  God willing it will actually get done this week! I also need to phone to make an appointment to have my winter tires put on.  Hardly seems possible it is that time again.

And with that I best leave you with a thought for the day . . .

Small and Wonderful Things . . .

"The world is fairly studded and strewn with pennies cast broadside from a generous hand. But who gets excited by a mere penny? It is dire poverty indeed when a man is so malnourished and fatigued that he won't stoop to pick up a penny. But if you cultivate a healthy poverty and simplicity, so that finding a penny will literally make your day, then, since the world is in fact planted with pennies, you have with your poverty bought a lifetime of days. It is that simple. what you see is what you get." ~Anne Dillard

A few of the small and wonderful things which bring untold joy into my life. It's the small things in life which truly mean the most. Simple abundance . . . it's the best.

I was all turned around yesterday morning and you got my Tuesday post on a Monday!  So now you are getting my Monday post on a Tuesday.  Every time I do something like that, I scare myself a little bit.  Thoughts of memory loss, etc. Mom had dementia and so I worry about getting it myself. Its only natural I guess, but more and more I lose words these days.  I can see what it is that I am wanting to say but the word won't come out.  It does eventually though. Whew!   Sometimes my sister and I are both sitting there in the car trying to remember what it is we are trying to say! haha

At the age of 88 (89 in January) our father has a really quick mind. There is nothing missing there. If there is, I can't see it and haven't noticed it.  He might be slowing down physically, and he might not be able to hear so well, but his brain works very well.  He plays Solitaire on his computer for an hour or so every day and he reads tons of books, so that probably helps to keep things ticking in the brain.

I need to read more.

Looking at photos of all the trees that came down and all the damage that was done on my son Doug's property I am so grateful that nobody was hurt and that their home was not damaged in Hurricane Fiona. So many people lost so much here in the Maritimes.  I am not sure if my son has had his power restored yet or not.  It will take a while for people to sort themselves out after this one.  Many people have been devastated by this storm and it will take months, maybe even years to recover.  My heart breaks at the loss, and another hurricane is making its way up.  Ian.   My heart and prayers are with all of those who are and will be affected.

I have not heard if my youngest daughter and her family have been affected by it or not. They live in one of the areas here in NS that would have been hard hit.  I am just assuming no news is good news there, also with my youngest son.

My son in NB was alright. They got high winds but were safe.

I am looking forward to General Conference this coming weekend.  Twice a year our church leaders speak to our church as a whole and I have always found it to be an inspirational and uplifting experience. I refer to the talks that are given often in the ensuing months afterwards.  I have been preparing myself spiritually this past week and this week to be ready to take it all in.  These have been a really difficult few years for all of us in a variety of ways.  A bit of inspiration is always welcome. The conferences are available for all to watch and listen to. You can find out more on the church website. Come listen to a prophet's voice.  I always love the music as well. It is just time well spent.

Family. We all have one.  Some of us are more blessed in that area than others, I know.  I am very grateful for mine.  I have always been able to count on them. We may have been a bit dysfunctional in some ways when we were growing up, but we matter to each other.  I would not give any of them up for anything. I love each one so much and they are important to me.  The best gift God ever gave me was my family.

The blessing that these two are in my life. I chose well.  They are as unique from each other as unique can be. Cinnamon is aloof and yet at the very same time incredibly affectionate when she wants to be. She is the braver of the two. Nutmeg runs and hides at the first sign of anything different.  He might be twice the size of Cinnamon, but he is a big chicken when it comes to bravery. He is very affectionate, however.  He is never too far from me.  In the evening he lays right next to me on the sofa and looks up and back at me often wanting a scratch behind the ears.  I love them both so much and would not be without them.

My garage door is fixed.  Hooray!  They came yesterday to have a look at it and the guy burnt the motor out testing it. He said it was ready to burn out anyways.  No matter, I have a new motor on it now and it is a lot quieter and works wonderfully.  I can now use my garage again without worries.

I am so grateful for my cozy home and the life I am living.  At times I do get lonely, (Not very often. I am a person who has always enjoyed my own company.) and I do feel sad sometimes that I don't have anyone human to share it with, but I love my little home. I am not at all unaware of the blessing that it is, and I do not take it for granted.  When I think of how far I have come in the last two years I am overwhelmed with gratitude to my Heavenly Father and the angels He set around me to help me through this time. I know that all of our lives are filled with their own trials and tribulations and life itself is a series of ups and downs.  I am grateful for my faith which gives me the strength to keep going through it all.  My faith has seen me through a lot and will yet.

Hot cocoa. I'm enjoying one now.  Love these cooler mornings.

And with that I best leave you with a thought for the day  . . .

I recently took an online cooking course by Marco Pierre White, a Micheline Star Chef via the BBC Maestro program.  I am offering the prize of a free course through BBC Maestro to one lucky person. They have a multitude of courses available on everything from wine tasting to vegetarian cooking, writing, film making etc.  This is a great opportunity and all you have to do for a chance to win it is to leave a comment on my post here

I really enjoyed the course I took.

I hope you have a lovely day. I think my sister and I are off to the farm market this morning!  Whatever you get up to, don't forget!

The Simple Woman's Daybook . . .

FOR TODAY, September 26th 2022

Outside my window ...
Everything is pretty calm this morning. Gone are the winds of the weekend. Yesterday was quite sunny and bright. Its been raining this morning and through the night. There are puddles.

I am thinking ...
I am thinking about all the people in the Maritimes that have been badly hit by Storm Fiona. Some areas have been decimated by the impact of this storm. PEI, Cape Breton, Newfoundland. My son and his wife had many trees go down in their yard and the cleanup needed is a full-on job, and without any power.  My DIL has had sporadic internet and has posted many photos using her phone. Everyone is involved in the cleanup.  They have had to travel to other areas to be able charge their phones. She has posted about several historic series of rock formations, notably the turned teacup and twin shore elephant rock, now gone. I can't tell you how many homes in Port Aux Basque Newfoundland that were simply swept out to sea. Its devastating.  My prayers are with everyone who has been negatively impacted.  Thankfully here in the Valley we were protected from much of the devastation.  My sister lost a part of one tree and part of one came down in my back yard, but that appears to be the most damage that people here in the Valley have experienced. Downed trees and branches.  Thank goodness.  I think most people's power has now been restored.

Nature is an incredibly powerful force.

I am thankful for ...
Nobody in my family was severely impacted that I know of.

In the kitchen ...

Rice Crispy Chicken. Not new, but the post has been revamped. I need to do that occasionally. To bring some of my older posts up to date. I think it is called SEO.  But I am not sure. Anyways, this is a delicious chicken recipe! If you look at a lot of food blogs you will see that there is only very rarely new content and they focus a lot on revamping the old stuff, bringing it up to date, rephotographing, etc.

On my "to cook" list ...

The Cosy Apron.  Grilled Lemon Chicken Flatbread Wraps.  These look fabulous!

Good to know ...

I am wanting to create ...

Megan Plus Five.  DIY Painted Pumpkins. Cute!

Ruffles and Rainboots.  Painted Mason Jar Pumpkins.

The Happy Farmhouse. Bushel Basket Pumpkins.

No source, but cute. Wicker plate holders painted to look like pumpkins.

Three Sheep Studio.  Rustic Wool Pumpkins.

I am reading ...

Mean Baby, by Selma Blair

Selma Blair has played many archetypal roles: Gullible ingenue in Cruel Intentions. Preppy ice queen in Legally Blonde. Fire-starter in Hellboy. Muse to Karl Lagerfeld. Face of Chanel. Cover model. Advocate for the multiple sclerosis community. But before all of that, Selma was known best for being one thing: a mean baby.

In a memoir that is as wildly funny as it is emotionally shattering, Selma Blair tells the captivating story of growing up and finding her truth. The first story Selma Blair Beitner ever heard about herself is that she was a mean, mean baby. With her mouth pulled in a perpetual snarl and a head so furry it had to be rubbed to make way for her forehead, Selma spent years living up to her terrible reputation: biting her sisters, lying spontaneously, getting drunk from Passover wine at the age of seven, and behaving dramatically so that she would be the center of attention.

Although Selma went on to become a celebrated Hollywood actress and model, she could never quite shake the periods of darkness that overtook her, the certainty that there was a great mystery at the heart of her life. She often felt like her arms might be on fire, a sensation not unlike electric shocks, and she secretly drank to escape.

Over the course of this beautiful and, at times, devasting memoir, Selma lays bare her addiction to alcohol, her devotion to her brilliant and complicated mother, and the moments she flirted with death. There is brutal violence, passionate love, true friendship, the gift of motherhood, and, finally, the surprising salvation of a multiple sclerosis diagnosis. In a voice that is powerfully original, fiercely intelligent, and full of hard-won wisdom, Selma Blair’s Mean Baby is a deeply human memoir and a true literary achievement.

I had no idea really of who Selma Blair was until I saw her on Dancing with the Stars last week, then I saw this memoir. I like autobiographical books.  I was interested. I read the first 55 pages in one go!  Its an I can't put it down kind of a book if you are into biography types of books. Loving it.

Looking Forward to ...
General Conference this weekend. I always love General Conference and I am so happy that it doesn't conflict with the Canadian Thanksgiving!  Quite often it does and that makes it difficult!

Today . . .

Just briefly checking in to let you all know I am okay.  Much of the Maritime Provinces has been very badly affected by the storm with loss of power, downed trees, etc. This is my little back yard with a branch having been broken from the Maple tree there. As you can see from about midway up the tree. It is still very windy out but not raining at the moment.  The power flicked off and on again about 5:30 a.m. So far it has stayed on, but a lot of people in the province have no power and some areas they are saying will not have any until at least the 28th of September.

PEI has been very badly affected with 95% of the province being without power. Here in Nova Scotia, it is the Eastern side and Cape Breton which has been affected the worst.

It is still very windy here however, so it not entirely over yet. We will see how the day progresses. I think the worst of it is over though. I hope you all have a wonderful day.  Don't forget!

My Friday Finds . . .

A few of the things I find each week that inspire me to want to do better, to create, to become better, to read more, to watch, to just DO something! Things that delight, inspire, and bring me joy.  Maybe they will do the same thing for you!

How to make handmade paper using recycled materials.  This sounds interesting.  From Paper Slurry.

Make your own Art Bowls using tea bag papers.  These are so pretty.  From Letting in the Light.  No instructions, just eye candy and inspiration.  This woman is an amazing artist

Something just to make you smile.  Its a Cabbit . . .

Painted matching people rocks.   Love this idea and what fun the children would have playing mix and match.  Do you remember those flip cards from when we were kids that you could mix and match heads, middles and bottoms with?  Fun, fun!  This is from You Clever Monkey

Folded paper garlands.  So colourful!  Found on Minieco.

DIY Floral Party Hats.  Found on  Oh Happy Day

The Tip Toe Fairy.  Party Hat Hair Clips.   SWEET!  Complete tutorial.

An adorable Overall Tutu.  I love this.   I couldn't find a source but I couldn't help show you.  It is so sweet.

22 hard to kill plants.  From Decor 8

How to care for introverts.  Very helpful.

Get your fruit and veg squeaky clean.  From Women's Health Magazine.  This is great.  You never know what is lurking on the outside of your vegetables. Just think about it, if you are buying loose apples, or bananas or whatever, fifty people could have touched that apple or banana before you did. Who knows what their hygiene habits are.

Save money and eat healthy from The Frugal Girls.

I love this French Country Kitchen  . . . source.   Just a bit of eye candy inspiration.

How to get soft feet.  I must try this, although admittedly my feet have never looked like they do on the left.

I love this head wrap.  My idea of a winter hat.  From Frayed Knot

Cable stitch dish clothes.  Love LOVE the colours.  From Look What I Made.  Free pattern.

From Ravelry.  A free basket pattern.

I also like these from Maggie's Crochet. I used to do a lot of stuff like this when my children were growing up. I had matching stuff in my bathroom etc.  I would buy the Annie's Attic patterns for crochet.

Roasted Garlic Jelly.  From  Love and Olive Oil.

And that's my finds for this week.  I hope you found something to inspire you to get creating, or just do something better.

A thought to carry through the day . . .

What a run around I had yesterday. I dropped my car off at 10 for the undercoating.  They dropped me off back home and I did everything I needed to do to get the house ready for this big storm we are expecting.  I was thinking I would have the car back at 1 by the latest. It was being detailed after (washed, hoovered, etc.).  By 2 p.m. I had not heard anything.  I couldn't remember the name of the place either. My sister was at work so I couldn't call her.  I found an online chat and was chatting to someone online by 3, they couldn't get any response from anyone.  By 4:15 I was really getting upset. They closed at 5. Finally, at 4:30 I found someone to talk to only to discover they had not even started on my car, but I could have it back by noon today. I said that's unacceptable.  I have sat here waiting all day, I want someone to come pick me up and I'll bring it home. So, I made another appointment for next Thursday.  As it was, nobody picked me up until almost 5.  They had to get someone to bring the car up from their detailing place (the other end of town) and then come to get me.  I was really annoyed. I may find someplace else to do the cleaning because I am not very happy. Its not cheap and I really expect a little bit more consideration than that for what they are asking in price. They're short staffed. Knowing this they shouldn't book people in.  My appointment was for 11 a.m. They must have known by mid-afternoon they weren't going to be getting it done. What's wrong with people???

Anyways, I finally got my car and was able to go to the store before it closed and get home. I had wanted to pick up a few bits just in case we lose our power with that bad storm which is coming. They are telling everyone to be prepared for the long haul just in case.  If we lose our power it could days before it comes back on.  I may go and fill my car with petrol this morning just in case.

In the English Kitchen today, Everything Bagel Bread. I started this bread in the bread machine and finished it in the oven. It turned out really lovely. I was very pleased with it! I highly recommend!

Have a wonderful day. Whatever you get up to stay safe and be happy. Be blessed and don't forget!
