My Favourite things . . .

These are a few of my favourite things. Maybe some of them are your favourites also!

Blue and white china.  I love it.  It makes me happy just looking at it.

I especially love Greengate Blue and Whites, Fay pattern.  I have a few of the coffee bowl/cups and two egg cups and egg spoons . . . any they have blue and white textiles also.  I have two tea towels.

Don't get me started on their red and white, that is my second favourite love . . .  I have two of those big tea cups.  They're beautiful . . .Todd is not allowed to use them.

Anything and everything with bluebirds on it.  I adore bluebirds.

I had this very old Lefton Bluebird cream and sugar dish set, but Todd knocked the creamer off the shelf and it broke into a bazillion pieces.  *sniff *sniff*  They are highly collectible I understand.
Its only stuff, but I like it.

Silver spoon rings. I don't own one, but maybe one day  . . . or maybe not.  Just something else my children will have to dispose of one day, but that doesn't stop me from liking them.

These new tiny houses.  I am not sure I could ever manage to live in one. I have too much stuff, but I do like them. A lot.  I'd need an awfully big shed, lol. My first husband's grandfather used to live in a small shack on the corner of the farm.  It was basically just one room, but he had everything in it. A bed, a small table and a chair, an armchair, a woodstove, etc. It was not cluttered. It was cosy. He lived in it until he passed away. I used to love visiting him in it.  He drove a little Volkswagon Beetle.

Really good corn on the cob.  Peaches and Cream is my favourite.  That is something they don't have over here.  Good corn on the cob.  Mostly what they sell in the shops is what I would consider cow corn, and they husk it before they sell it which makes it deteriorate in flavour even more.  Anyone who knows good corn  knows you don't husk it until just before you are going to cook it, and that you cook it preferably within hours of picking it.  I used to love it when we lived in Southern Ontario and during corn season we could buy it off the back of a wagon at the side of the road. A farmer's dozen. 13 not 12. They always gave you and extra ear. I would buy a good three dozen, take it home, husk it and cook it right away and we would feast on it with plenty of butter and salt.  It was sooooo good!

Country Fairs and Exhibitions.  I love them.  The sounds and smells . . .  all of it.  I love going through the exhibition tent and seeing all the pickles and cakes and flowers . . .  seeing all the animals. Hearing the fair music and the squeals of delight.  Smelling the hotdogs, chips, popcorn, candy floss and candy apples. Hearing the hawkers shouting out, step right up, step right up  . . . They are a lovely experience.  I remember as a teen one stopped in Middleton where we were living at the time and set up in an old parking lot in front of the highschool where Tim Hortons sits right now.  There were rides and all sorts. It was just a small fair. I remember the guy running the rides letting us girls all ride for free. I went on the swing ride and threw up after.  I cannot go on rides although I wish I could.  Doesn't stop me from enjoying watching however!

Fair ground food.  The hotdogs.  The handcut chips.  The everything. Its all good!!

The humble tomato sandwich. Nothing fancy here.  Cheap white bread.  Butter, miracle whip, sliced ripe tomatoes, salt and plenty of coarse black pepper. I am in sandwich heaven. Magnificent.  Brilliant.  Bliss.

Cucumber Salad, with tomatoes when they are ripe.  It's delicious. I could eat a big plate of it and nothing else.  I don't pout Dijon in mine or parsley.  I salt the onions and cucumber first and let them sit for a bit before I rinse and drain them well.  That takes some of the sharpness away from the onion and makes the cucucumber less watery when it comes to making the salad.

It tastes best in the summer with fresh ripe
tomatoes and cucumbers.

The music of Neil Diamond. I could listen to it for hours.  It always makes me happy to hear his songs. Takes me back to my youth in many ways. There isn't a song of his that I don't like, and I could not ever pick one as a favourite. I love them all.

Little House on the Prairie.  Especially the early series when the girls were a lot younger. I just adore this show. Its nice, like the Waltons.  With great values. No swearing, nudity, sex or violence, and yet it is very entertaining, and remains a firm favourite in the minds and hearts of many, many people.  Maybe the film/television industry could learn something from that.

Lets go back to nice
and simple.

A good steak, cooked well. It is for this reason alone that I could never become a true Vegetarian. I love steak.  Medium rare, with lots of fried onions and mushrooms on the side, a baked potato and salad.  If I had to pick a last meal it would be either this, or perfectly roasted Prime Rib . . .  medium rare and still pink, au jus . . .

My mom made good steaks.  T-bones. What a
treat they were for Sunday lunch.
With mashed potatoes
and her homemade
salads
...

She used to start her salads mid afternoon, by marinating some chopped onion in some oil and vinegar. By the time supper rolled around it would be ready to toss together with the lettuce, etc.  So good. ♥♥♥

Reading the classics . . .  Jane Eyre, Little Women, Green Gables, Pride and Prejudice, etc. They never go out of style and never will.  I also love to watch film adaptions of them. Soooo good. I really enjoyed the latest version of Anne with an E.  I thought it was excellent.

Somewhere in Time. Its one of my all-time favourite films. We haven't watched it in a while.  Time to re-watch it methinks . . . I love the music from the film as well . . .

It's getting late so I better stop.  Is my age showing from this list of favourite things? Maybe so.

A thought to carry with you  . . .

  5. Like you, I love blue-patterned dishes first and red next. (Well, I love blue anything!) I also agree with you about corn: Nova Scotia corn was wonderful, and now that I've moved back to Newfoundland, I shall probably suffer as you do. :( As well, I agree about Little House on the Prairie and The Waltons: they're being re-run over here, and with all the terrible and stressful things in today's world, they are 2 of my escape shows. TTFN!
