My Favourite Things . . .

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOOPpfEd5Zsq2tbOc2-UBk6Njak8VrG7e7evggWXGZ2mh-j53ekFS5_iJ7oLR7meELGbGOHT1tpJoMRH-WDForIBx-F86puBU5K_uuGKf1hWiGc5Jko8kG6S71gFooUD3ZEZNrNzAWfJI/s320/alfp_favorite_things.png

A few of the things which catch my eye, inspire me, pluck at my heart strings, make me smile, or that I just enjoy.  Maybe they will do the same for you.

Nesting hens.  I was given one when I got married many moons ago.  I am not sure what they are technically supposed to be used for.  Any ideas?

Formica and Chrome Dining Sets!  Had my parents old one when I first got married.  We had had it recovered. Wish I still had it!

Hoosier Cabinets. These stand-alone cabinets with built in work spaces really tickle my fancy. Oh how I would love to have one!

Vintage stoves.  I just adore them.  Susan Branch has one.  They don't make them like that anymore!

Vintage Bakeware Tins. The kind that left an impression on whatever you were baking. My mom had a few old baking sheets and tins like that. If you are lucky enough to have some that are still in good nick, you are a very lucky person!

Vintage cookie and biscuit cutters.  My mom used to have a set of Christmas ones that she cranked out Christmas cookies with sometimes. I am sure they are probably still somewhere in her house. She never threw away anything.

Vintage Flour Sifters . . .  wish I had one of these, sifting flour would be a lot easier!

Milk glass salt and pepper shakers.  Love them.  Love salt and pepper shaker sets anyways, but really love these.  I can't pick a favourite. I'll take all of them!

Dishes printed with berries on them. My sister had a set of stoneware with strawberries on them when she first got married that I coveted!

Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh!!!!

Spice cabinets and jars.  Mom had an old set that had little 3D fruits on the jars.  I always loved looking at it when I was a child. Maybe my sister can take a picture of it for me to show you. Mom hadn't used it to store spices in it for years. It was just there in her kitchen, sitting on the counter.

Pyrex nesting bowls.  I wish!

Old enamel salt and matchstick holders  . . .

Old food tins . . .  the kind that came with stuff in them, like cocoa powder, milk powder and the like, before we got all plasticized!

Vintage bake sets.  I had a Robin Hood one.  I used to mix the cake mixes up with water and eat them raw.  lol   I know . . . .

sigh  . . .  just sigh  . . .

Matching Cannister Sets.  Mom had several actually.  One was a set of houses in a variety of sizes that she had won as a prize from her days as an Avon Lady.

Red and white kitchens  . . .

Vintage Chrome Step Stools  . . .

This kind of potato masher.  Nothing else works as well! Nothing  . . .

And those are my favourite things for this time around.  What are some of yours?

A thought to carry with you  . . .

I think I might finally be going to get some royalties from my book.  Fingers crossed.  I've only ever gotten three payments which included my advance (which I didn't get until after the book was published.)  They owe me quite a bit.  Keep me in your happy thoughts that they finally pay me like they said they were going to. Saying something and doing it is two different things I have discovered.

Oh, and I seem to have done something to my back.  Please pray that it goes off soon, thanks!

Spiced Parsnip & Carrot Soup

In The English Kitchen today  . . . Spiced Parsnip & Carrot Soup.  A friend gave us a bag of parsnips from their garden and I made this delicious soup.  Its come in handy as it feels more like October out there than August!  Brrr  . . .

Have a beautiful day  . . .  don't forget!

And I do too!

PS -  I thought I would add this photo as it might thrill you as much as it thrills me! My sister sent me a photo of my mom's spice rack and her potato masher.  The spice rack is well worn, as is the handle of the masher.  You can't get a much better masher than this one!  Enjoy!

Those worn spots in the pain on the spice jars were probably cause by my always picking at them and lovingly touching them all of my growing up years and beyond.  They always fascinated me.

  1. Hi Marie, so sorry to hear your back is giving you trouble. Perhaps better for you to take it easy today and rest after all the excitement yesterday. I do love all your favourite things especially that Susan Branch stove. Did you see on Twitter that she broke her wrist preparing for a garage sale? It's her right wrist, too. Not good when you're trying to write/illustrate a book.

Apparently the hens on nests dishes came originally from England and ranged in size from 2" for mustard to 8" for candy. I dispay mine at Easter filled with jelly beans. You're quite right about those potato mashers. I needed a new one and found one at the $ store for $3. It is nice and sturdy and has a bright orange plastic handle but I do love the wooden handled ones. I have a small collection of the cookie cutters with the wooden knobs. I still get excited when I find one in the wild for a dollar or two. My favourite is Scottie dog shaped with a red knob. I hang him on our Christmas tree with a narrow red ribbon. You've made me feel like I've been antiquing with all the pretty retro pictures. Will go and check out your Parsnip and Carrot soup. Hope your back feels better soon. Stay warm. Hugs, Elaine

    1. Oh, I did see that on Twitter. Poor Susan! I can't imagine not being able to use my hands and as a writer and artist it must really be hard for her! Yikes! I hope it doesn't take long to heal! I can just picture your Scottie Dog shaped cookie cutter. My favourite cookie cutter shape. Over here you can buy Scottish shortbread cookies in that shape sometimes! Somehow they taste better when they are shaped like little Scottie dogs! Love and hugs and happy day wishes for you always! xoxo

  4. I have one of those hens in white porcelain that came with matching egg cups. I always assumed I was to put the soft boiled eggs in it to serve. Just wanted to add that I'm preparing for my son's wedding and thought a cookie buffet would be a good idea. I have chosen three of your recipes as they closely remind me of my mother's baking. We're going for nostalgia and your baking always reminds me of home.
