My Favourite things . . .

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOOPpfEd5Zsq2tbOc2-UBk6Njak8VrG7e7evggWXGZ2mh-j53ekFS5_iJ7oLR7meELGbGOHT1tpJoMRH-WDForIBx-F86puBU5K_uuGKf1hWiGc5Jko8kG6S71gFooUD3ZEZNrNzAWfJI/s320/alfp_favorite_things.png

A few of the things which catch my eye, inspire me, pluck at my heart strings, make me smile, or that I just enjoy.  Maybe they will do the same for you.

Vintage stoves. I just love the looks of them. You can get them all updated and working to today's standards apparently.  Those old beauties were real work horses.  I've had my Canon for 8 years now and have had the engineers out three times this past 6 weeks.  It is still not working properly and the last guy who came said he would have to order several new parts and come again, He is due tomorrow.  Apparently there is a major design flaw in it.  It has a computerised mother board  or some such in the control panel and the designer put it in the hottest part of the stove.  Computer parts and heat don't work well together. He said though, fingers crossed, that once he gets it sorted if I am lucky I might get another 8 years from it before it cracks up again!

Cookie Cutters.  I love them. My mom had a Christmas set like this.  I have quite a few different ones. Ones I have collected, and others I've been given.  My favourite ones of all are these  . . .

Its an old Tupperware Set I've managed to keep ahold of for years, since my kids were young. Nine times out of ten, these are the ones I use.

The Mary Tyler Moore Show. It was brilliant and still is.  We have it on dvd, or a lot of it anyways. When I was a teenager I used to watch it faithfully every week.  I wanted to be her, have her clothes, job, apartment.  Or at least the character Mary Richards whom she played. She was a great role model!

I also wanted to marry Vinnie Barbarino  . . .

And own an Inn in Vermont.

Impromptu visits from Grace and her mama and papa!  She is just so sweet, and she loves Mitzie's squirrel.  (I told Ariana that I had washed it at least once, lol)

She is just so lovely and has the chubbiest little cheeks.  I could just kiss them forever.

Letter writing Grandsons.  I can't wait for it to arrive!  Jake is such a character.  Love him to bits.

Love all my grandchildren.  Guess who is a big 13 today!  Gabriel.  Its hard to believe he is a teenager now!  Next it will be Jon.  They are growing up far too quickly!  Somebody make it stop!  Happy Birthday Gabriel!  Love you and hope its the best one ever!

Easter. I think I probably like Easter almost as much as Christmas.  I have loads of happy childhood Easter memories.  We didn't really have an Easter Basket. We had Easter bowls and when we got up in the morning they would be sitting in our places at the table.  Nothing special about them. They were the same melmac bowls we normally had our cereal in.  There would be a chocolate bunny, some marshallow filled hard coloured eggs, maybe a few other little bits and best of all real eggs that my mother had coloured with our crayons after we went to bed the night before.  My favourites were the ones she would colour all stripey with all the colours.  Once we had gotten up and seen them, she would poke out both ends carefully with a darning needle and we would help her to blow them out into a bowl and we would have scrambled eggs for breakfast.  We may have only had two or three real eggs each, but to me they were precious.  After they were blown out she would string them on yarn for us and we would wear them like necklaces all day, trying very hard to keep from breaking them.

And we would always have a ham for dinner.  Sliced and served with mustard and mashed potatoes.  We only ever had ham twice a year.  For New Years and for Easter.  It was soooooo good!

I have always loved old fashioned wooden rocking chairs.  They are just so lovely.  To me they say home sweet home.

Classic Lemon Meringue Pie.  It is my favourite pie of all  . . .

Only slightly edging out raisin pie, which is a very close second  . . .

If you were to set a slice of each in front of me, I would have a very difficult time choosing.

Carrots.  Raw or cooked, next to potatoes they are my favourite vegetable.  And they are very good for you.  Mom always said that carrots helped you to see in the dark.

Cream and sauce jugs.  I've been collecting them for years.  I don't have a vast collection. Only about 6 or so.  They come in really handy when you are having company for dinner.  I like to serve everyone their own individual pot of gravy in them.  A bit eccentric I know  . . .

Vintage Table Cloths  . . .

YOU!  Most of us have never met in person, and we probably never will, but I feel like we are friends.  You are some of my favourite people!

And those are my favourite things for this week.

A thought to carry with you  . . .

In The English Kitchen today, I'm cooking rice.  There are two risottos, a sweet and a savoury one, a delicious soup and two salads.

Hope you have a beautiful day.  Love and be loved! Don't forget!

  1. Hi Marie, I think your idea to serve individual little jugs of gravy is excellent and how pretty they would look on the table. Lemon pie is one of my favourites, too, but for some reason I never think to make it. Take gentle care. Hugs, Elaine

  5. Oh, my sweet friend; you are a favorite of mine. I loved going through your favorite list today. They are always fun to look at. I
I’m sorry your stove is having a problem for you that must be really hard. You cook; I do but not like you do.
I love love all the vintage stuff of course. I especially love the cream and sauce jugs. I have a few.
My husband would love both of those Pies. I wonder if it is too late to learn to make a good pie. I never wanted to compete with his blessed mother that could make the best pies ever.
Happy Birthday to that cute grandson and I love that you receive notes from them. I wish we wrote more letter and sent more notes. I hate all the texting and etc.
I love you get moments with that adorable Grace. She is a cute one.
I have an old fashioned wooden Rocking Chair and it is a favorite of mine.
Sending loving thoughts and hugs your way!

    1. No time like the present LeAnn! Hopefully the engineer will have it sorted today and I can bake again. I have wanted to make bread all week, but didn't want to risk ruining it! I get to babysit Grace today so that Ariana can have her driving lesson! xoxo

  6. Hi Marie~

Love it all! Funny thing, I was just watching the, Bob Newhart Show!! I have always loved it, it just reminds me of good times...the same with, Mary Tyler Moore, two of my favorites!

Grace is getting so big, she is so adorable! I'm so glad you live close so that you can get lots of hugs and kisses!! Jake is so cute, I just love that big smile! Happy birthday to Gabriel!! I have a granddaughter who will be turning 13 at the end of the month...where does the time go?!

I loved your Easter memories. We always hard cooked our eggs and colored them with food coloring, I love the idea that your mom colored them, and surprised you the next morning. Our Easter's weren't extravagant, like you we got a few pieces of chocolate, the hard, marshmallow filled eggs and jelly beans. My mom always made us a new Easter dress, and we wore white gloves to church, I loved it!

You are such a great host, I would love my own little jug of gravy, yum!

We have been dealing with a sick dog all month, in fact, this morning, we were suppose to have him put to sleep - but, my prayers were answered, and we brought him home! He is suffering from liver disease, and they thought he had liver cancer. We did ex rays this morning, and his liver looked a little big, but not cancer. They sent us home with some medication, and we will have to make his food from now on. It sounds like a ton of work, and the medication will make us tighten our belts, but it's worth it to me. It's amazing how these beautiful little friends just work their way into our hearts!

So good to catch up to you, I have missed you!! Love to you! XOXOX

    Hugs and Love,
    Barb

    1. Oh what a blessing Barb! So happy you have had a reprieve with your much beloved furry family member. It is so sad when we have to say farewell. Easter was when we were finally allowed to wear knee socks after having to wear leotards all Winter. I hated my leotards, they had nubbies and were itchy! Love you to bits also! xoxo
