Rain, rain . . . go away???

“The rain to the wind said,
You push and I'll pelt.'
They so smote the garden bed
 That the flowers actually knelt,
And lay lodged . . . though not dead.
I know how the flowers felt.”
~Robert Frost

We have had more than our fair share of rain over these past couple of weeks, and it looks as if we may be getting even more of it today.  The skies are overcast, dismal and grey.  The rain we get is why this country is so green and lush, and that is one of the first things people notice about the UK.  Its green and lush.  Ahh . . .that it were like Camelot and only rained at night, but this is real life and not a dream . . .

As a child I had spent many, many rainy days with my face pushed up against the glass of the windows in our home with a heart filled with longing.   Rainy days were so boring.   There was nothing to do, and unless it was very warm along with the rain . . . we were not allowed outside.   I don't know why . . . I suppose there was a somewhat irrational fear of us getting a chill and pneumonia if we dared to venture out and play in it.

My sum total of experience was splashing in the puddles on my way to school . . . for school mustn't be missed, rain or  no . . .

Of course we wore galoshes . . . there was no fun of bare feet in puddles to be had.   Our stockinged and shod feet were stuffed into galoshes that were very difficult to remove without the shoes coming with them.  They were plastic and see-through and folded closed with a button and an elastic closure . . . there were no fancy rain boots, coloured with images of flowers and such . . . or if there was . . .  I had never seen them.

Just as well really, for I doubt my parents could have afforded "fancy smancy" . . .

Rain always came garnished with longing . . .  a yearning for something else, someplace else . . . feeling bored and wanting something to do.   There were indoor games and outdoor games . . . and indoor games were not half as much fun as the outdoor games . . .

We only had two or three channels on the television and children's programming was only happening for about an hour or so early in the morning, or on Saturday mornings . . . you might have a cartoon or two or three then . . . other days we were left to our own devices and had to make our own fun . . .

Board games, crayons, books . . . and longing . . .

"Some people feel the rain, others just get wet".
~Bob Marley

I remember being caught up in a sun shower one day though . . . and it was mesmerizing and exhilarating.  I stood beneath the eaves of the garage . . . dry . . . whilst the sun shone brightly and just inches away from my face rain fell in such a deluge that . . . it roared . . . and bounced back up off the pavement in tall sploshes . . .

I stuck my hand out to catch it . . . and it pelted down on my fingers, tickling . . .

And then I got brave and decided to taste it . . . it tasted like . . . rain

I remember the smell of pavement which had recently been hot and smelling like sunshine  . . . now wet . . .
and smelling like damp earth.   A much nicer smell than the rusty smell of a wet wire window screen . . .

And then as soon as it had started . . . it was finished and the pavement began to dry . . . and before you knew it you could barely tell that it had rained at all . . .

Except for the rare jewel collected and nestled in the petals of a flower or leaf . . . or clinging to a blade of grass, small droplets here and there . . . gathered and filling little fairy buckets.

Magic . . . pure and utter magic. Oh rain which joins the sky and earth . . . and knits the two together . . . Joy comes in seeing the wonder of it all, and embracing it for what it is. Stew or soup tastes better when rain is pelting down, and blankets comfort in a special way.   Books . . . likewise.

A thought to carry with you through today . . .

  2. Hi Marie, well surprise surprise!! The sun has shone beautifully all day!! Unfortunately I had a funeral to go to so couldn't make the most of it. Still, a funeral in the sunshine is so much better than a funeral in the rain!

It was a burial and my daughter and I both noticed the grave stone we were standing by, it simply said the man's name, year of birth and death, and 'dealt a bad hand'. It really upset me, wouldn't you just hate that on your headstone.

Let's hope the sun stays a while longer, lot's of love xxx

    1. We had showers off and on. Today is not looking good at the moment, but there is hope! That is a sad grave stone. :-( Love and hugs. xoxo

  3. Hi Marie, what a lovely ode to the rain. When my cousin was a little girl she used to pray it would not rain because she did not like her new raincoat. Her mother explained that we needed rain so the farmers could grow our food. She stopped praying it would not rain but she never was fond of that raincoat. I remember only too well those clear plastic rainboots. A fashion statement they were not! Hope it will be a sunny day tomorrow. Hugs, Elaine

    1. Not looking good thus far Elaine! We do need rain, but I wish it would be spread out a bit more with some extra sunny intervals in between! Love and hugs, xoxo

  4. Yes, I remember those galoshes! Only my parents called them 'rubbers' - lol). Mine were red, but still closed with the button and an elastic loop-thingie. I loved them!

  5. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on rain today. It's getting ready to rain here right now. We have had a lot of rain the last month are too and I really do need the sunshine.
Your thoughts did send me back to some memories of my own; which was sweet.
There is something nostalgic about rain and stew and soup does taste better along with a warm blanket.
Blessings and hugs for this one!

  6. It sort of mauzy here today... don't you love that word? It's one my Newfoundland born husband uses to describe misty, grey days. I must say that the green is brilliant against the dull overcast. I confess that I don't mind rain. I like the coziness of it. Curling up with a good book and a cup of tea or going through the fridge and finding lots of veg to make a big soup with, putting bread to rise or baking a cake and that lovely "homey" smell that accompanies anything baking in the oven. I do hope the sun continues to shine down on you and warms your heart and soul. Sending love your way. xoxo

    1. Oh, I love the word Mauzy! I can just picture those misty grey days back home. Lots of mornings in the valley start off that way, but mom always said they foretold a fine day and she was right. Once the fog burnt off the day was always beautiful sunny and warm. Your day sounds lovely. I wish I could be there to smell everything "homey!" Love you! xoxo
