A Day Book . . .

FOR TODAY, January 21st, 2025

OUTSIDE MY WINDOW ...

Quite a bit more snow than last week. This was around 6:30 this morning. All is quiet and calm out there. It is very cold however. -13*C/9*F. Probably the coldest day we have had so far this winter.  I am all toasty warm in my wee house, thank goodness. I do have to go out later to collect my prescriptions, however.

I AM THINKING ...

What is it that motivates people to be wicked and cruel to others without provocation. There is this person who drops really mean and spiteful comments here and there. All under the cloak of anonymity. Only on blogger, because blogger doesn't have anything in place to prevent such a thing.  It seems you can say whatever you want to or about another person and hide who you are completely. You cannot do that on any other platform.  They all require that you sign in.

But what is it that motivates a person to say mean and spiteful things to people they don't even know?  I wonder about the sanity of such a person. My conclusion is that they have to be crazy. Unhinged. Mentally ill.

I AM ALSO THINKING ...

It was six years ago today that our mother passed away. There is not a day that goes by that I do not miss her. I wish that I had been able to come home and see her one last time. I wanted to, and had someone who would have bought me a ticket to, but . . . I would have been in the way, which is totally understandable. There was enough to do without me being there as well. I know and believe that I will see her again one day, but that doesn't stop me from missing her now.

Scottish Farmhouse Eggs

IN THE KITCHEN ...

Scottish Farmhouse Eggs.  A simple and easy supper.  Simple ingredients, soft white breadcrumbs, cheese, spring onions and eggs. Most delicious.

ON MY "TO COOK" LIST ...

My brother was cooking Chicken Kadai for their dinner last night. I had never heard of it, so I had to look it up.  Its a delicious looking curry. I have put it on my to try list.  I sourced the recipe here on Cook with Kushi. It looks amazing. I love a good curry.

LOOKING FORWARD TO ...

I got a new shower head. I am looking forward to getting it put on.  I know its not long since I bought one, but the one I bought previously makes it impossible for me to have a shower without the water blasting me full in the face the whole time. I have to shower with my eyes closed. Blind. I can't seem to adjust it properly. I hate that. I am hoping this new one I bought stops that from happening and that it can be adjusted in such a way as I can have the water blast going more down than out and in my face.

SOMETHING NICE ...

How terrible it must be to carry around the burden of hatred in your heart continuously. No wonder some people are so nasty.  Ohh . . . the weight of all that negativity. It must be so heavy to carry. Martin Luther King had it right.

SOMETHING ELSE THAT IS NICE ...

I just love this woman's channel. Olesya & House. I find it so relaxing to watch her puttering about her gardens, cooking, crafting. So well done.

THINGS I KNOW TO BE TRUE ...

We are surrounded by lies. We must cultivate in ourselves the power of discernment so that we can easily distinguish between truth and lie.

I WOULD LIKE TO CREATE ...

Little knitted dolls  . . .  can you imagine a cute little bowl of these to enjoy?

OH MY GOODNESS ...

HOW I WISH ...

My kitchen was full of light.

I AM READING ...

TO THE BRIGHT EDGE OF THE WORLD, by Eowyn Ivey

In the winter of 1885, decorated war hero Colonel Allen Forrester leads a small band of men on an expedition that has been deemed impossible: to venture up the Wolverine River and pierce the vast, untamed Alaska Territory.

Leaving behind Sophie, his newly pregnant wife, Colonel Forrester records his extraordinary experiences in hopes that his journal will reach her if he doesn't return--once he passes beyond the edge of the known world, there's no telling what awaits him. The Wolverine River Valley is not only breathtaking and forbidding but also terrifying in ways that the colonel and his men never could have imagined. As they map the territory and gather information on the native tribes, whose understanding of the natural world is unlike anything they have ever encountered, Forrester and his men discover the blurred lines between human and wild animal, the living and the dead. And while the men knew they would face starvation and danger, they cannot escape the sense that some greater, mysterious force threatens their lives.

Meanwhile, on her own at Vancouver Barracks, Sophie chafes under the social restrictions and yearns to travel alongside her husband. She does not know that the winter will require as much of her as it does her husband, that both her courage and faith will be tested to the breaking point. Can her exploration of nature through the new art of photography help her to rediscover her sense of beauty and wonder?

The truths that Allen and Sophie discover over the course of that fateful year change both of their lives--and the lives of those who hear their stories long after they're gone--forever.

I have read and enjoyed her book The Snow Child several times so thought I would try another book from this brilliant author.

  1. I mentioned that some come on Blogger to be bullies to my daughter. It's unbelievable to her. It's not like it helps in any way.It just destroys.I wonder how that person raised her children..if any? I bet they ran away lol.It only makes us wonder about how intrinsically depraved they are.Shame.And yes a basket of those dolls would be adorbs:)

  3. Be safe if you go out in the snow, Marie!! We may get some here in next few days which I am not looking forward to but hope to stay home at least. It is pretty to look at however. Sorry about the nasty person...seems lots of loonies loose these days...I suppose whatever motivates them is the same crazy issue as whatever drives the nutter above us to pee on our window!! But we are working on getting a move ere long...tho' moving is overwheming too...well, bit by bit, eh?

  4. Bullies always think they can hide, they must have a miserable life. Cold here too, with some wind and sun. Lots of nice things to make, lately I don’t have the inclination to make myself but really enjoy looking. Stay warm when you go out.

Your comments mean the world to me, and while I may not be able to address each one individually, each one is important to me and each one counts. Thanks so much!
