The Simple Woman's Daybook . . .

FOR TODAY, September 10, 2019

Outside my window ...
Its still pretty dark out there!  The nights are really beginning to draw in now.   And it is quite cool this morning. It was cold last night also. I said to Todd it won't be long before we are going to have to put on some heat.  I hope it works well without any problems.  We haven't had our boiler serviced this year. We had been paying for the upkeep (which we shouldn't have) for 9 1/2 years now, but when our landlord put up our rent £10 a week, we said we weren't going to pay it anymore as it is his responsability.  Not sure if we will get a service or not.  It will cost them dearly if the boiler breaks down.

I am thinking ...
There are some really horrible people about. My sister had someone take advantage of them being without power during Hurricane Dorian and they broke into her car and stole some valuable stuff from her garden.  Some people are despicable.  How can they live with themselves?  I hope they catch them. Thankfully sis had CCTV cameras and they were still working. She has some good clear pictures of the thieves.

I am thankful for ...
I had a facetime with my dad yesterday and a nice convo with my oldest son on messanger. Thankful for modern technology!

In the kitchen ...

Curry Coconut King Prawns

I am reading ...

Everything I Never Told You, by Celeste Ng

Lydia is the favourite child of Marilyn and James Lee; a girl who inherited her mother's bright blue eyes and her father's jet-black hair. Her parents are determined that Lydia will fulfill the dreams they were unable to pursue - in Marilyn's case that her daughter become a doctor rather than a homemaker, in James's case that Lydia be popular at school, a girl with a busy social life and the centre of every party. But Lydia is under pressures that have nothing to do with growing up in 1970s small town Ohio. Her father is an American born of first-generation Chinese immigrants, and his ethnicity, and hers, make them conspicuous in any setting.

When Lydia's body is found in the local lake, James is consumed by guilt and sets out on a reckless path that may destroy his marriage. Marilyn, devastated and vengeful, is determined to make someone accountable, no matter what the cost. Lydia's older brother, Nathan, is convinced that local bad boy Jack is somehow involved. But it's the youngest in the family - Hannah - who observes far more than anyone realises and who may be the only one who knows what really happened.

Thoroughly enjoying this! Gripping!  Its a not able to put down read.

I am looking forward to ...

  1. Hi, Marie! Good to catch up with you and all your news, and see that Todd had a good birthday at the weekend. :) We had some yucky, rainy weather the past weekend, and chilly too--we had to turn the heat on in the evening! :/ Autumn is already here! Speaking of autumn and things, LOVE all your watercolor sketches--beautiful work! Very glad your family are OK back home in Canada, was wondering how they were in the wake of Dorian. I'm so very sorry your sister had things stolen from her! :( I hope she may be able to have her things recovered! Wishing you all a good new week now... LOVE YOU LOTS!! ((LOVE & BIG HUGS))

    1. Yes, she can't do much about it as she had more plants than she was allowed to have, but they are going to confront the theives. Modern technology is wonderful in so many ways, not so wonderful in others, but you have to take the good with the bad and hope that the good outweights the bad! LOL about that man and his kids! Thanks for your kind words re my work, lol. I try! xoxo

  3. Hi Marie,
I'm pretty sure that these days landlords are required by law to have gas safety checks done on all gas appliances once a year, and to produce certificates that the inspections have been done.

    Love your maple leaf.

    1. I am pretty sure they are, but then again, our Landlord told us when we moved in the Boiler was our responsability. When we went to renew the maintenance agreement a few years back, the gas company told us that the owner of the house was responsable, but still we continued to pay. Now that he has put the rent up £10 a week, we refuse to pay any longer! Thanks for your input Maria! xoxo

  4. I am blessed to have a good land lord here, anything that needs fixing, they do well and promptly. So nice for me to not have to pay for it myself. Hope yours does too.I figure all is paid for in the rent anyway. I used to have to do and pay for all the upkeep on my home but now have moved and am renting and like not having to be responsible for it all anymore.

    1. Our landlords are Irish and real skin-flints. We are afraid to ask them for anything because they want to put up the rent to cover any upkeep. So we stay quiet about things and do most of it ourselves. Hoping to move to a small place in the New Year, but at the age of 81 it is hard for Todd.xoxo

  5. Hope things work out with the landlord...they tend to be greedy folks, we have found in our life!!

  6. Hi Marie, I love your apple and leaf watercolours. So pretty and so Autumnal as Martha would say. I'm so glad your family is safe after the storm. The people who stole from your sister simply do not care about anyone other than themselves or else they are desperate. I hope they find who did it. And that picture of Tobermorey is besutiful with all those bright colours. Hugs, Elaine
