A Day Book . . .

FOR TODAY, May 13th, 2025

OUTSIDE MY WINDOW ...

Just a few minutes shy of 7 a.m. and the sky s a brilliant blue.  You can see the trees greening up behing the houses across the way. The grass is all green and covered with dew and the garbage is sitting there waiting for pickup.  A sunny day on garbage day. A rareity.

I AM THINKING ...

All of my blood tests came back pretty normal. My liver enzymes have even improved, so I was happy about that yesterday. Blood sugars, cholesterol, etc.  All good.

I AM ALSO THINKING ...

About my brother's impending visit. So much to do, so little time. That's me! All will be well. Looking forward to seeing him.  I guess the three of us talk at least a little bit every day. It's good we are so close. Not all siblings are.

Oven Baked Pierogies with Caramelized Onions

IN THE KITCHEN ...

Oven Baked Pierogies with Caramelized Onions.  A delicious dish.  I love Pierogies.  I was not totally impressed with these frozen ones I had bought, however. They seemed kind of bland to me. Grandma's Pierogies.  I used to make my own all the time. I guess I should start doing that again!

ON MY "TO COOK" LIST ...

Spicy Ginger from Slimming Eats. This looks fabulous! I love a good curry.

I KNOW THIS TO BE TRUE ...

Attitude is everything.

SOMETHING THAT IS NICE ...

There is no sweeter sound on earth than birdsong in the spring  . . .

SOMETHING ELSE THAT IS NICE ...

If you do something, anything, large or small, do it the best way that you can. If you always make your best effort, nobody can ever accuse you of not trying. Anything worth doing is worth doing well. A plain and simple truth.

I AM READING . . .

THE HEART OF WINTER,  by Jonathan Evison

Abe Winter and Ruth Warneke were never meant to be together—at least if you ask Ruth. Yet their catastrophic blind date in college evolved into a seventy-year marriage and a life on a farm on Bainbridge Island with their hens and beloved Labrador, Megs.

Through the years, the Winters have fallen in and out of lockstep, and from their haunting losses and guarded secrets, a dependable partnership has been forged. But when Ruth’s loose tooth turns out to be something much more malicious, the beautiful, reliable life they’ve created together comes to a crisis.

As Ruth struggles with her crumbling independence, Abe must learn how to take care of her while their three living children question his ability to look after his wife. And once again, the couple has to reconfigure how to be there for each other.

In this bighearted and profound portrait of a marriage, Jonathan Evison explores seventy years of big moments in subtle ways, elegantly braiding the Winters’ turbulent history with their present-day battles, showing us how the oddly paired college kids became parents, fell apart and back together, and grew into the Abe and Ruth of today.

Endlessly heartwarming and moving, The Heart of Winter is a reminder that true love lives in small, everyday moments.

I am thoroughly enjoying this.  It's probably one of the best books I have read this year. Seriously good.  I read a chapter every night, or as close as I can to that much. I am making the pleasure of reading it last as long as I can. Yes, it is that good. I don't want it to end.

I know most people would have finished this by now, but I only read novels at night in bed and I have been falling asleep quickly lately.

Not a bad thing . . .

  1. The wren is busy in the garden making nests and singing all day. They return each year. I call them Jenny wrens too, must be a British thing. The birds are so busy chirping away in the garden. Do you use Merlin, an app that identifies bird calls, best thing is that it s free. A bit of a red sky this morning, possibly a bit of rain later this afternoon. Lovely crochet ideas today. Old sitcoms are the best. We watch a lot of Vision tv, has lots of the old shows. Enjoy the day

  3. Beautiful dresses...reminds me of things my kin wore when I was a kid...funny how in ways, some styles return again...or maybe never quite go out of style. It is nice to be older and not worry about what is popular you know...if I love something, it does not matter to me if anyone else thinks it is popular...ha!! Comfort is primary of course.
