A Day Book . . .

FOR TODAY, May 6th, 2025

OUTSIDE MY WINDOW ...

Its not yet 7 a.m.  Cloudy and quiet outside. You can see the leaves starting on the trees across the way. The grass is now really green. 7*C/45*F and is supposed to get up to 20*C/68*F. No rain today. Yesterday it was quite sunny all day. No such luck today.

I AM THINKING ...

I am stressing a bit about my blood test appointment later this morning.  Yesterday I had a lot of trouble walking very far. My left knee is really bad and my right hip as well.  That spells trouble on both sides. I hope that I can walk from the parking lot and all the way down to the lab alright to have them done. I am praying that I can.  Arthritis is no fun, that's for sure. From the waist up I am ok, but from the waist down, well, that's a different story!

I AM ALSO THINKING ...

About Ants. I hope the landlord sprays soon. I have bait all over the place in here, tucked into places that the cats cannot access it of course. I would never want to harm them.  I get rid of the ants in one area and they pop up in another. It is an ongoing battle.  I was doing my zoom class last night and I kept finding them here on top of my desk. It was very distracting. At least I have not seen or felt any in my bed since Saturday night. That was not very nice to say the least. Ants in my bed. Just the thought makes me shudder.

Homemade Catalina Dressing

IN THE KITCHEN ...

Homemade Catalina Dressing. I like to make my own salad dressings from scratch if I can. For one thing I never get a bottle of store dressing used up and it is a waste of money for me, and for another I can control what goes into them better. This homemade version of Catalina is delicious and very simple to make. You will never want to buy the readymade dressing again. This is fabulous.  Sweetened with honey. Tangy and rich.

ON MY "TO COOK" LIST ...

This Greek Cabbage Rice from Hungry Happens looks fabulous. I love cabbage and I love rice.  This is right up my alley.

I KNOW THIS TO BE TRUE ...

I do love my little home. When my home is happy, I am happy.  From the time I walk through my door, I am at peace.

I AM READING . . .

THE HEART OF WINTER,  by Jonathan Evison

Abe Winter and Ruth Warneke were never meant to be together—at least if you ask Ruth. Yet their catastrophic blind date in college evolved into a seventy-year marriage and a life on a farm on Bainbridge Island with their hens and beloved Labrador, Megs.

Through the years, the Winters have fallen in and out of lockstep, and from their haunting losses and guarded secrets, a dependable partnership has been forged. But when Ruth’s loose tooth turns out to be something much more malicious, the beautiful, reliable life they’ve created together comes to a crisis.

As Ruth struggles with her crumbling independence, Abe must learn how to take care of her while their three living children question his ability to look after his wife. And once again, the couple has to reconfigure how to be there for each other.

In this bighearted and profound portrait of a marriage, Jonathan Evison explores seventy years of big moments in subtle ways, elegantly braiding the Winters’ turbulent history with their present-day battles, showing us how the oddly paired college kids became parents, fell apart and back together, and grew into the Abe and Ruth of today.

Endlessly heartwarming and moving, The Heart of Winter is a reminder that true love lives in small, everyday moments.

I am thoroughly enjoying this.  It's probably one of the best books I have read this year. Seriously good.  I read a chapter every night, or as close as I can to that much. I am making the pleasure of reading it last as long as I can. Yes, it is that good. I don't want it to end.
