A Day Book . . .

FOR TODAY, March 11th, 2025

OUTSIDE MY WINDOW ...

7 a.m., still dark. All that is left now are a few small dirty piles of snow. The edges of the lawns are all dug up from where the people who do the snow removal caught them with their tractor.  You can see frost on the ground that is not snowy.  The sky looks pretty clear.

I AM THINKING ...

There is not a lot that I really want to think about these days. It is all very distressing, upsetting, and anger-fueling. Out of my control.  So I try to just think about positive things and the things I can do something about.

I AM ALSO THINKING ...

I've been trying to watch With Love Meghan on Netflix and trying to like it, but I just don't. It all comes across as very insincere to me. I am disappointed as I really wanted to enjoy it. I have watched one and a half episodes and doubt I will watch any more.

Extra Easy Lemon Drizzle Loaf

IN THE KITCHEN ...

Extra Easy Lemon Drizzle Loaf.  I was so tired yesterday and so did not feel like cooking anything complicated for the blog.  I remembered this Lemon Drizzle Loaf recipe I have that is super simple and so I baked that. Everything just gets banged into a bowl or food processor and beaten together all at once. Very simple, moist and delicious.

ON MY "TO COOK" LIST ...

These Meatballs in Dijon Gravy from The Kitchn look really delicious!

SOMETHING NICE ...

This is one of my favorite quotes about March. March is windy and the weather fluctuates so much between Winter and Spring. She's hard to tie down.

SOMETHING ELSE THAT IS NICE ...

Chintz flowers . . .  I love these types of prints.  What a pretty tea cup.

SOMETHING I KNOW TO BE TRUE ...

It costs nothing to be kind.  Kind words feed the soul of the giver as well as the receiver.

I WOULD LIKE TO CREATE ...

OH MY GOODNESS ...

Yikes! My worst nightmare!

I WISH ...

I wish I had a huge kitchen like that, filled with light.

I AM READING ...

The Daring Ladies of Lowell, by Kate Alcott

From the New York Times bestselling author of THE DRESSMAKER comes a moving historical novel about a bold young woman drawn to the looms of Lowell, Massachusetts--and to the one man with whom she has no business falling in love.

Eager to escape life on her family’s farm, Alice Barrow moves to Lowell in 1832 and throws herself into the hard work demanded of “the mill girls.” In spite of the long hours, she discovers a vibrant new life and a true friend—a saucy, strong-willed girl name Lovey Cornell.

But conditions at the factory become increasingly dangerous, and Alice finds the courage to represent the workers and their grievances. Although mill owner, Hiram Fiske, pays no heed, Alice attracts the attention of his eldest son, the handsome and reserved Samuel Fiske. Their mutual attraction is intense, tempting Alice to dream of a different future for herself.

This dream is shattered when Lovey is found strangled to death. A sensational trial follows, bringing all the unrest that’s brewing to the surface. Alice finds herself torn between her commitment to the girls in the mill and her blossoming relationship with Samuel.

Based on the actual murder of a mill girl and the subsequent trial in 1833, THE DARING LADIES OF LOWELL brilliantly captures a transitional moment in America’s history while also exploring the complex nature of love, loyalty, and the enduring power of friendship.

This time I might even finish it. I am very close.

    1. You had so much more snow than we had to begin with. We did get a lot of rain for a few days though and that really melted the snow away. I worry for my children and grandchildren as well. I am proud of our Canadian leaders and how they conduct themselves for sure! But we Canadians are world renowned for being polite and kind! xoxo

  3. Hi, Marie! Oh, I'm with you... it's hard these days! The world feels like such a mess. And largely because of certain world "leaders" tearing things apart. It's all very upsetting to look at any news at the moment, and likely will be for some time to come. Like you, I'm trying to turn towards anything that is lighter and brighter--and things I can control or have some say in! It is snowing a little bit here today... so winter is not yet over. We don't change out clocks here until the end of the month. Those Envelop Books are adorable. I've not done any paper crafting in a very long time, just don't have as many of those supplies now. The sort of patchwork/embellishment to mend a jumper is a great idea--fun with the contrast of the knit fabric and smooth cotton patches. That cream dress with the frills and lace looks rather Regency-inspire--love Regency period dress! Ooo...Your lemon drizzles looks delish--YUM! That book you're reading sounds intriguing. Happy week, my friend! ((LOVE & HUGS))

  4. The "noisy neighbour in the basement" is making the world a terrible place. It is okay for him to issue tariffs but not other countries. The nerve. It is finally a spring like day, windows open,r ed wing black birds have returned as have robins. There is still lots of snow, but very slowly receding. Late today for my visit as we went out for brunch with daughter, son in law and grandkids to celebrate my birthday (tomorrow) and hers on Thursday. Have a lovely day.

  5. Meghan (and Harry )seem to come off as insincere and shallow, her show seems to highlight that…it IS a disappointment. I love the paper crafts and the embroidered sweater, so sweet. I don't need a big kitchen but wish I had that light! Glorious! Thank for always sharing such charming quotes and images…and yummy recipes!
Have a most delightful day and sleep well…soon this crazy time mix-up will pass! 🩷 cheers, Virginia

Your comments mean the world to me, and while I may not be able to address each one individually, each one is important to me and each one counts. Thanks so much!
