Five Things About Me . . .

I thought it would be fun to do another five things about me post today.   So long as I can come up with five things about me that is!  I think I can.   I love to share and I love a bit of self examination too.  I hope you don't mind!

This is a photograph of me flying up to Girl Guides from Brownies.   Back in those days almost every little girl was a Brownie and then a Girl Guide.  It was a marvellous program.  I loved being a Brownie and then a Girl Guide.  I loved belonging to something which I thought was special and great.  I learned how to do so many things via the guiding program that I would never have learned otherwise.   I learned how to mend clothes and how to darn socks.  How to make a bed properly with hospital corners and everything.   I could tell direction by looking at the stars in the sky at night.  How to build a fire.  Basic First Aid.  How to survive in the wilderness, well to a degree at any rate.  So many skills I learned, most of them invaluable.   I also learned how to follow rules and I learned respect for others, God and Country.  My girls were also Brownies and Girl Guides and I was a Brownie leader for a time.   I was Happy Owl.  I loved working with the girls.   I have such wonderful memories of my years as a Brownie and as a Girl Guide. I don't think many girls join this organization today.   It's sad really. They are missing out on something pretty wonderful I think!

There used to be a television program on the television on Sunday mornings when I was a girl called Davey and Goliath.   Davey was the little boy and Goliath was his dog.   Lots of nice things were taught on this show.   Mostly of a spiritual nature I suppose, but all to do with becoming a better person.  We learned through Davey and his family's experiences.  I loved this show.  I felt like they were real people, even though intellectually I knew that they were not.  They seemed pretty real and I could identify with a lot of situations they addressed on the show.   Hands up if anyone else used to watch this???

As a girl I really admired Haley Mills.  I wanted to be just like her.  I devoured her films if I could seen them.  I had a Haley Mills paper doll.  I just adored her clothes, her hair, everything about her.   When I was about 16 I saw a film on the telly that she was in when she was a bit older called "The Trouble with Angels."  For a while, even though I was not Catholic, I wanted to become a nun . . .  all because Haley Mills had wanted to become a nun in that film.  I don't think I really wanted to become a nun . . . I think I really wanted to become Haley Mills!  Or maybe a combination of Haley Mills and Annette Funicello.

I suffer terribly from motion sickness.   It was really bad when I was a child.   Even a swing made me feel very sick, and I couldn't even think about going on one of these Merry Go Round things.  Driving in the car was a nightmare for me.  I don't think my father ever had a car I did not throw up in, frequently  . . .  I am not so bad in cars now, so long as I can sit in the front seat.  It's when I am in the back that I really feel ill.  I wonder why that is???   Why would one feel more sick sitting in the back of a car than in the front of a car???  It's weird.   In any case I would love to be able to go to amusement parks and enjoy the rides like other people do, but I cannot.  Just thinking about it makes me dizzy.  Todd has always wanted to go on a cruise, and I would kind of like to go on one too.  Aside from the cost (money is a huge factor, we haven't got any!) the thought of spending a week or maybe even two feeling seasick puts me off.  To me that would be a nightmare and not like any kind of holiday at all.   I hate being on boats most of all.  They REALLY make me feel ill.

I have always kind of wanted to have blonde hair. I know that I would just look totally ridiculous as a Blonde.  It just wouldn't suit me at all . . .  but I have always thought blonde hair was so beautiful.  There is that old saying about Blondes knowing how to have fun.   And all the most glamorous actresses and singers have always been blond.  Twiggy was blonde.  All I have ever had is dark, dark hair, which is now getting more grey with each day that passes.  I refuse to dye it.   I am going grey au naturelle.  I reckon being grey, or white hairs is about as close to being a blond as I will ever get!

And there you have it!  Five nonsensical weird things about me.   Whew!  I enjoyed it!  I hope you did too!

I meant to show you this yesterday.  I was cleaning up my craft room and this piece of paper was just begging to be drawn upon  This is what came out.  I quite like her hair.

A thought to carry with you through today . . .

  1. It is lovely to get a glimpse into your younger self Marie...i was in the guides as well, but not the brownies,,unfiirtunately we didn't have a very good leader, she had favourites...not good...i wanted to do exciting things a bit like your bush skills etc..all they wanted to do was sit around chatting and discussing things....i didn't stay long which was sad as the uniform must have cost mum quite a bit that she coudn't afford...you never think of that as a child. Sarah was a guide leader long before i was guide age,,,and she was brilliant camping etc with her troupe....there is a brownie troop in the village here but not sure about guides dont think they can get leaders these days...

  2. Love the painting Marie. I really do.

I was in Brownies but we did not have a Brown Owl. I was so glad to give up when I went to Guides. When I was older I became a Cub leader.

    Enjoy your day.

  3. Thank you Sybil! I think I was certainly an interesting child! At least when I look back on it I think I was. Mind you I could be completely way off base! IN any case I loved being a child and I have a lot of happy memories. I loved the Guiding program. Thankfully I always had great leaders and a good bunch of companions for the most part. It's a shame people no longer want to help out in that way. I think white hair is like a halo! Very angelic!

Suzan, thank you so very much! My boys were in Beavers, Cubs and Scouts! They enjoyed them too!

  5. I was dying mine a couple of years ago when I had really long hair Monique, but I just had it all cut short and let it go. I quite love it now! Thanks for the comment about me looking great grey! I am not so sure about that. Is it possible that grey could be the new blonde??? What fun!

  6. When I first went gray, I did color my hair. I had blond streaks put in to hide the gray. Well that stopped a long time ago as I didn't like the fuss of having it done all the time and now I'm naturally frosted with white... There is really no hiding our age and I for one am glad to be the age I am. Hope you have a wonderful Thursday!

  7. Even though I am just now coming to know you from your art and your writing, I sometimes feel we are "sisters from another mother" as one of my friends says. I also went through the Guiding system. My mother (who has Alzheimer's) and I were chatting about it just the other day. I reminded her that she wanted me to be able to attend because it was an "extra" that wasn't affordable in her time. She could begin each fall and go until she "had" to purchase a uniform, then she would drop out. There were four brothers who could pass along the Cub uniform but Mom couldn't wear that to Brownies. She was so pleased that I had remembered her story just as she was pleased the day she could afford to purchase the uniform for me. My comment is getting too long but enough to say that I had the same passion for Hayley Mills in most of her roles.

  8. Colleen, this is what I have come to love about blogging, getting to meet nice people like yourself. Like attracts like I believe and so we are bound to have lots in common. My mother could never join anything like this when she was a girl either. With the depression and then War it was impossible. I saved up and bought my own Brownie Uniform when the time came. It was expensive, but worth every penny! Of course my younger sister benefited from it as well!

  9. I had some streaks put in when I was growing it out as well Pam. They helped to hide it until it looked natural. You have a super day too! xxoo

  10. Dear Marie, Your art is simply lovely! I loved this post. I love Haley Mills and bought many of the movies for my oldest daughter to watch when she was a little girl.
I am in the process of going gray. I am in my early 40's and decided, that it just was not worth the trouble or the stress on my hair to dye it. I am salt and pepper right now. But my dad was completely gray by 45 so we will see if I have the guts to stick it out. Blessings and Sunshine, Valerie
ps. love that brownie scout picture. I was a brownie and a girl scout growing up. loved it!

  11. It is fun getting to know 5 more things about you. I've been sick so long and didn't feel like dying my hair so my hair is all grey now. I think I like it... Still deciding. Hugs, Lura

  12. I love the post of 5 things about you. I always learn a bit more and then I find here and there some things we are a like in.
I wasn't a girl scout but I did belong to an organization for girls similar to the churches program for the 8-11 year old girls. I loved being activity day leader; it was a lot of fun.
I am like you I have motion sickness sometimes. Just looking at the Merry Go Round made me remember well. I do theme parks well.
I love the adorable picture you did.
The recipe is a keeper for sure.
Thanks for your comments dear friend on my blogs. You are the best. Blessings, love and hugs!

  13. Valerie, I have only started going grey the last few years. I will be 59 in August. My mother is 82 and still does not have a grey hair on her head. Instead she has only gone lighter and lighter each year. She once had quite dark hair and now has light brown hair.

I am glad that you are feeling much better now Lura. You had us all scared for a whiie! I think you are beautiful no matter what colour your hair is!

LeAnn you are so kind. I truly hope that one day we will be able to meet in person! xxoo
