Wednesday Witterings . . .

Just some thoughts which have been crowding my mine over these weeks.

Why don't I use some of the things I have?  What am I saving them for?  We all do it. Some of us have beautiful dishes, or silver cutlery, sweaters that we love, etc.  We save them for good.  Why do we do that?

For me, it has always been because I don't want them to be damaged or broken, to get worn out, etc. My mother did the same thing.  Kept things for special occasions and then barely used them for fear of damaging them. She was the kind of woman who kept the plastic wrapping on her lamp shades.  When she died her furniture, even though it was over 25 years old, looked brand new.

There is nothing wrong with having a healthy respect for our possessions and caring for them as best as we can. But is not every day that we are given a special occasion?  Does not every morning we open our eyes once more deserve to be celebrated?

I say, rip the plastic off your lamp shades. Use the good dishes. Wear that sweater you love so much.  Eat those cookies now, don't save them for a special occasion or guest that might never come. Eat them now while they are still good, before they expire, and you have to throw them away. Drink your tea in a china cup. Write/draw in that pretty notebook. So what if you ruin a page?  Or if you chip the cup?

What is the point of having pretty things, or things you love, if you don't darn well enjoy using them?

In my dreams there is always a Mr. Darcy.  Someone to share things with.  And I enjoy their company. What does that mean?  Does that mean that I don't really wish to be alone?  Do I actually want to have someone to share my life with, eventually, one day?  Do I not feel that I deserve to be loved in the way that I deserve to be loved?

Just because I have gotten it incredibly wrong three times do I never deserve the opportunity to get it right?  Should I close the door forever on the chance at finding love in my old age?  What is love in your old age supposed to look like?

I tell myself that I am not thin enough, pretty enough, yada, yada, yada. I question why anyone would ever want to spend time with me as their companion. I tell myself I am not mobile enough, not healthy enough, yada, yada, yada.

Why can't I see the good in me, or my worth in that way?  Why do I deem myself as unlovable? Sometimes it makes me sad to think that I have spent my whole life not ever knowing what it is to be cherished or appreciated in a meaningful way. But then again, they do say that it is better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all.

I may not have ever had a face beautiful enough to launch ships but who says you need to?

Then again, perhaps I first need to learn to truly love myself before I go looking outside of myself for love.

Where is the elegance today? Do you remember when people used to dress up to fly? You couldn't go on an airplane unless you were properly attired. You would not go out for a meal without putting on your best clothes. You had clothing reserved just for wearing around the house, and doing your chores, but you changed them for going out the door.

When we were children, we had clothes that were reserved for going to school, but then we had clothes that were for play.  Sundays meant we had special clothing that was reserved for Sunday School and church, which was a tiny bit more fancy that that which we wore to school, and fancier yet than what we wore for play.

You would never have dreamed of wearing your night clothes all day, or of walking around the house without your night robe on or your slippers.

True, it was only the housewives on the television who did their chores in pearls and high heels, with every hair in place.

There is a part of me that longs for elegance. That would love to dress up just to go to the shops.

There is a man in town that you see walking often and he is always dressed proper-like.  Shirt and tie. Neat jacket, shone shoes, proper cap on his head. He is a bit of an oddity really, but a part of me admires his standards.

We have gone from having pride in our looks to wearing jeans that look like they have been run over by a lawnmower.  How/when did that happen?

Do you make your bed every morning?  I do.  It is one of the first things that I do. Even though most days there is never anyone else in here to see if I have made my bed or not, I go to the trouble of making it. Of brushing the wrinkles out of the sheets and blankets, and pulling them up just so, tight and secure.  Of pulling the bedspread over top and placing the pillows in their rightful spots. It is a part of my routine.

It is the same at the end of the day. I prepare my bed for sleeping. I turn the bedspread down and open the sheets/blanket, turning it over in a corner waiting for me to arrive. Turn on the light on the nightstand in readiness for my arrival. And I do this right after I have my shower and put on my night clothes.  I am a creature of routine I suppose.

There is a great comfort to be found in routine, even if that routine is only for your own eyes.

Sometimes I wonder why I don't go to the trouble of setting myself a place at the table for my meals.  Why am I content to sit on the sofa and watch the television while I eat off a tv tray?

I have fallen into the bad habit of just eating whenever I am hungry. There is no set time for breakfast, lunch or supper.  Sometimes there is no breakfast, lunch or supper.  There is just whatever, whenever.

Which causes me to think did I only do those things for the pleasure of others?  Am I not worth doing those things for myself?  I need to do better. I am worth the effort.

This made me smile big time. Both the Quote and the Jesus. I love this Jesus as he is portrayed in the series The Chosen.  He is just as I have always imagined Jesus to be. Not blue eyed and fair skinned, light haired.  Middle Eastern with the kindest eyes.  Eyes you can lean into and feel loved and welcome, cared for.

And with that I have probably troubled you long enough with my witterings. My head is a bit all over the place this morning. My Doctor's appointment is at 10 and I need to get ready for that. What will be will be.  I am hoping for a miracle and at the same time steeling myself for whatever it is.  But then again, are you ever truly ready for bad news?  I think not . . . but I am hoping it is not the worst.

A thought to carry with you . . .

In The English Kitchen today  . . .  Biria Tacos.  I loved these.  But then, I love most Mexican flavors.  These were fabulously tasty.

Have a wonderful Wednesday.  I have Doctors this morning and then whatever, supper with my dad and his friends tonight.  Life must go on!  Whatever you get up to don't forget!

The Simple Woman's Daybook . . .

FOR TODAY, October 4th, 2022

Outside my window ...
It is still dark. It's garbage day today. And it's not raining. Wonder of all wonders, lol.  It is frosty however!

I am thinking ...
My son still has no electricity. Thankfully the people my DIL works for has loaned them a generator, but not before they lost the contents of their refrigerator and freezer.  I think perhaps a generator is a wise investment for any family, but it's not something I can afford at this point. I would have a difficult time manhandling one around as well. The house I had put the offer on had its own generator.

I am thankful for ...
The leaders of my church and the wonderful wisdom, words and inspiration they shared with us over this past weekend, the music and the choirs.  It was all pretty special.

In the kitchen ...

Oven Roasted Butternut Squash.  This simple method of cooking really enhances and highlights the natural sweetness of this beautiful vegetable.

On my "to Cook" list ...

Cupcakes and Kale Chips.  BBQ Chicken Tostadas. These look so yummy.

Good to know ...

I am wanting to create ...

Where Your Treasure Is. Cinnamon Salt Dough Ornaments.

Boxwood Avenue. Stove Top Pot Pourri Gifts.

The Feathered Nest.  Little Christmas Wishes Under Glass.

21 Rosemary Lane.  Skies and Poles Ornaments. Cute!

No source, but a fabulous idea for a stocking stuffer.

I am reading ...

Mean Baby, by Selma Blair

Selma Blair has played many archetypal roles: Gullible ingenue in Cruel Intentions. Preppy ice queen in Legally Blonde. Fire-starter in Hellboy. Muse to Karl Lagerfeld. Face of Chanel. Cover model. Advocate for the multiple sclerosis community. But before all of that, Selma was known best for being one thing: a mean baby.

In a memoir that is as wildly funny as it is emotionally shattering, Selma Blair tells the captivating story of growing up and finding her truth. The first story Selma Blair Beitner ever heard about herself is that she was a mean, mean baby. With her mouth pulled in a perpetual snarl and a head so furry it had to be rubbed to make way for her forehead, Selma spent years living up to her terrible reputation: biting her sisters, lying spontaneously, getting drunk from Passover wine at the age of seven, and behaving dramatically so that she would be the center of attention.

Although Selma went on to become a celebrated Hollywood actress and model, she could never quite shake the periods of darkness that overtook her, the certainty that there was a great mystery at the heart of her life. She often felt like her arms might be on fire, a sensation not unlike electric shocks, and she secretly drank to escape.

Over the course of this beautiful and, at times, devasting memoir, Selma lays bare her addiction to alcohol, her devotion to her brilliant and complicated mother, and the moments she flirted with death. There is brutal violence, passionate love, true friendship, the gift of motherhood, and, finally, the surprising salvation of a multiple sclerosis diagnosis. In a voice that is powerfully original, fiercely intelligent, and full of hard-won wisdom, Selma Blair’s Mean Baby is a deeply human memoir and a true literary achievement.

Looking forward to ...

Small and Wonderful Things . . .

"The world is fairly studded and strewn with pennies cast broadside from a generous hand. But who gets excited by a mere penny? It is dire poverty indeed when a man is so malnourished and fatigued that he won't stoop to pick up a penny. But if you cultivate a healthy poverty and simplicity, so that finding a penny will literally make your day, then, since the world is in fact planted with pennies, you have with your poverty bought a lifetime of days. It is that simple. what you see is what you get." ~Anne Dillard

A few of the small and wonderful things which bring untold joy into my life. It's the small things in life which truly mean the most. Simple abundance . . . it's the best.

This past weekend was the semi-annual General Conference of the church I belong to, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. I always try to prepare myself in the weeks prior to Conference spiritually so that I can get the most from them that I can.  I arm myself with questions I am seeking answers to, etc. Second talk in, BANG! All of my questions, insecurities, longings, etc. were addressed.

"You can build a joyful happy life, because Jesus Christ is your strength."

And it continued throughout the whole five sessions that I watched.  Over and over again I was uplifted and inspired and edified.

Fear not, doubt not, be of good cheer, let not your heart be troubled.

It's not easy to commit yourself to spending 10 hours of time in one weekend entrenched in the things of the spirit.  The world always pulls us in so many directions.  But I have discovered over the years that it is always worth every second of the attention that I give to these conferences. My spiritual battery is renewed. My faith is upbraided. My testimony is strengthened.  Questions are clarified. Prayers are answered. I am filled with hope and peace, enough to help carry me through the next six months until the next conference comes around.

I am grateful for my heat pump this morning. First frost of the year. It went down to -1 last night, but my little house is toasty and warm. I have an appointment to have my Winter tires put on the car on the 11th. I will be happy to have that done. I am not sure what else I need to do to have my car winterized? Maybe have the oil changed?  I am not sure.  I have had it undercoated and cleaned thoroughly.  I have always left things like this up to the men in my life. It's not something I have ever really had to think about. I will have to do a google search.

Thank goodness for googling!

The autumn dance.  It is starting to escalate now. Leaves are changing color rapidly and dancing about. I love it. "October gave a party. The leaves by hundreds came. The chestnuts, oaks and maples, and leaves of every name." ~George Cooper

Like Anne Shirley, I am so happy that I live in a world where there is Octobers. This is one of my favorite months of the year. General Conference, Thanksgiving, Halloween.  All the colors, the smells, the sounds. It is a month that never stops giving.

Sunday dinner with the family.  I am so grateful that Cindy includes me. Its nice to be there all together. I love my family.

It's not a great photograph, but this is my second Great Paternal Grandfather. Someone posted this photograph on his entry on Family Search.  We don't have very many photographs of our ancestors, so this was a nice discovery.

I love family history.  Its who we are.

Pumpkins. I am still so undecided. It's a lot of money to spend on something that is just for a holiday . . .

Hot buttered toast. I'm enjoying some now. To me it is a simple thing I sometimes take for granted.  To others in the world, it is a great luxury. May I always be able to find the joy to be found in a slice of hot buttered toast.

I am grateful for having lived my whole life in countries free from great conflict, famine, etc. Do we take those things for granted?  Do we take our comforts, clean water, peace, warmth, shelter, education, etc. for granted. I have been guilty of often never giving those things a second thought. They are only what I have always known throughout my lifetime. I have never known true deprivation of anything. May I always hold those things dear and never take them for granted. There, but for the Grace of God, go I.

My life is filled with lots of joy. It is not perfect. I am not perfect. I strive every day to be better today than I was yesterday. Some days I am brilliant at this, other days I fall short, but I try . . .  always, I try. We will be blessed in the trying. Of this I know for sure.

A thought to carry with you . . .

In The English Kitchen today . . .  Easy Oven BBQ Pork Chops. No fuss, no muss and sized for two. Delicious.

My son on the Island is still without electricity. I hope it won't be too much longer for them.  It's been a year since he had his successful heart operation. I am grateful for that. It hardly seems a year, but it has been.  Time flies far too quickly.  I wish for you a week ahead filled with an abundance of small and wonderful things. Be happy. Be safe. Be healthy. Be blessed.  Don't forget!

All Things Nice . . .

The last warm hint of sunlight on the hills,
The naked harvest-field where Autumn spills
All the rich colors of her glowing stores,
Like Persian carpets laid on temple floors.

The earth is seamed with cracks and jagged scars,
The cattle stand beside the milking bars,
Waiting their quiet stable, dim and warm,
Sensing the hidden coming of the storm.

Even the dog whines now with lifted face
To come insie to his accustomed place
Behind the stove . . (he'll snore, and maybe bark
At some imagined person in the dark.)

I like to wake and know the cattle sleep
In warm, clean straw . . and in their pen the sheep
Lie huddled close, their breathing sweet and soft,
Mounting like incense to the dusty loft.

For our good land has meat and grace and health,
The marrow of her bones her hidden wealth.
A nation builds her walls on shifting sand
Unless her roots are nurtured in the land.
~Edna Jaques, Fall, My Kitchen Window (1935)

Many of the leaves have blown off in the storm last weekend, but there is still plenty of color there to delight my eye, especially in the early morning light of a brilliantly sunny day.  Not a cloud in the sky.  It is getting dark much earlier these days and will be even more so when the clocks fall back.   And it is dark when I get up in the morning.

The cats come to curl themselves around my ankles as I get up each morning, their eyes squinting from the sudden light after having spent a night in darkness. Their purring engines are revving, making me feel loved. It is nice not to be alone, and I am grateful for their company.  They do not ask for much in return. A warm place to sleep, food in their bellies, some ear scratches and belly rubs.

I had ordered a new place for them to sleep, with two comfy sleeping places so that they don't have to cram themselves into one small basket. Of course, it came in a flat pack. I spent an hour putting it together yesterday. I had thought that they might enjoy this in front of the window but hadn't really thought it through. It is too easy for them to reach my glass birds, so I have put it elsewhere. Unfortunately, elsewhere is not so welcoming to them as they cannot lay out and see what's happening on the street, and they do so love to keep current on the happenings there.  I may have to rethink the positioning of my glass birds.

Of course, while I was building it and immediately afterwards, it was a source of great curiosity. Little paws are not very helpful when you are trying to put things together, but each aspect of the building process was carefully scrutinized and approved.

Its lovely and soft. The little house bit is somewhat small for their larger frames. Cinnamon can get in, but Nutmeg is far too big.  They do enjoy the hanging pom pom.

They're back!  I had written to Old Dutch asking them what happened to them, and the response was that the summer here in the Maritimes was too humid and so they had stopped production for a few months, but that they would be back the end of September.  My sister happened to be at one of the local grocery stores after supper last night and there they were. There were only two packs left. She grabbed one for me and dropped it off on her way to pick up Dan after work.

Love is a sister.  I was so surprised and grateful for the care given. 💖 I am blessed, and I know it.

I had a lovely lunch out with my friend Christine yesterday. We did not go far, just around the corner from me. I had my usual fish and chips. (What else!)  I basically only ate the fish and a few chips, but it was nice to be there with a friend. (The fish was done perfectly.) I have known Christine for about 25 years now.  I introduced her daughter to her husband, and they have six children now. I served with Christine in the Relief Society Presidency not too long after I joined the church. We had a lovely catch up with each other yesterday. We both find ourselves at a point in life now where we are on our lonesome.  She is divorced and I am, well you know . . .  Anyways, it was really nice to get together. Life has not always been kind to either of us, but it has also been very beautiful.  We have much to be grateful for.

I do not actually mind living on my own much.  I have always enjoyed my own company and when I think back on the years, much of my life has been spent on my own without a companion for company. Even when I was married and bringing up my children, my husband was away more than he was at home, so my evenings were often spent on my own.  I did not mind overly much, and I do not mind overly much, but there are times when I really wish I had someone to talk to about the inner whispers and groanings of my heart . . .  to share with . . .  someone who understands and loves the same things. I thought I had that. After having spent so many years with a person who did not get my inner workings, I had been so happy to have found someone I thought was on the same page as myself, someone who shared that side of me that was so precious and personal. It wasn't real.

I wonder if I ever will in this lifetime have someone to share these things with.  Probably not, and I need to be okay with that. There is nobody to dance the reel with my old bones while they are still working.  If by chance one day, it should happen, I will be as surprised or even more surprised than anyone else will be.  I am not looking to be honest.  Maybe I need these years to learn how to love myself as I should.

I wonder should I get a pumpkin or two or three. Sometimes I think that I should. They would decorate the front porch and it would be nice to welcome my son and his family with a welcoming autumn porch when they come next weekend.   Something bright and color filled.

I had asked my son if he would go to church with me on the Sunday. Normally they will go with his dad and stepmom, but they are away on holiday this year. He said he would think about it, but I don't think he will.  I know what the words "I'll think about it" mean.  It means thanks but no thanks, but to placate you I will let you think I am thinking about it, but really I'm not going to even entertain the thought.

Most people think Latter Day Saints to be a peculiar people and I am not sure why, but I think we frighten them a tiny bit. And I "get" it.  I used to hide behind the sofa when the missionaries came to my door all those years ago as well.

I had just thought it would be nice for once to feel like one of those people who come to church on a special occasion with some of their family around them. All these years, I have watched people come to church on the holidays, surrounded with children and grandchildren, etc. and I have longed so much for that same thing.  It is not to be, I guess.  I need to be okay with that and pop that dream balloon once and for all.

They are probably afraid I will try to convert them.  Really all I wanted to do was feel like I had a family in a church that is filled with family and very family oriented, instead of on my own. Not sure if that makes sense, but there it is.

Instead, I will just be grateful that I have some family to spend Thanksgiving with when for so many years I did not. 😊 You need to count your blessings where you find them.

I saw this quote by Hank Smith on Instagram this morning.

"You may be up late wondering if life is every going to come together for you. It will. God has a plan for your life. Keep doing all the right you know how to do. Keep repenting when you fall short.  You'll survive the dark and the cold. The Son will rise and fill you with warmth"

It's funny how that goes. People ask me how do I know there really is a God?  Well, it's because I look for him in all of my moments and because I am looking for him, I see him, and I find him.  It has been ever so.  Even in my lowest darkest moments I have sought him out and he has been there to help guide me through them.   I don't know how else to explain it.

It's time to start feeding the other birds again. Insects are slowly going to ground.  Flowers, etc. The gardens are getting ready for the long Winter sleep.  I need to get a few more bird feeders and fill them, I guess. Something empties them as soon as I fill them. I have a tiny one and I fill it and within an hour it is empty.  I would love to have a big bird table like this that draws them all in, gathers them in to feed.  The cats would really enjoy watching them and so would I.  I never thought of stringing the peanuts up like that.

Ohh, that reminds me of when my children were small, and we used to make popcorn and cranberry garlands for on our Christmas tree. We always put the garlands out after Christmas for the birds to enjoy, and they did.

I used to make my own fat blocks as well, filled with bird seed and apple chunks, raisins, peanut butter.  The birds loved them.

I best leave you with a thought for today. Its conference today and I have quite a few things I need to do before it begins!
