Small and Wonderful Things . . .

"The world is fairly studded and strewn with pennies cast broadside from a generous hand. But who gets excited by a mere penny? It is dire poverty indeed when a man is so malnourished and fatigued that he won't stoop to pick up a penny. But if you cultivate a healthy poverty and simplicity, so that finding a penny will literally make your day, then, since the world is in fact planted with pennies, you have with your poverty bought a lifetime of days. It is that simple. What you see is what you get." ~Anne Dillard

A few of the small and wonderful things which bring untold joy into my life. It's the small things in life which truly mean the most. Simple abundance . . . it's the best.

I love the month of August, and not just because it is my birthday month.  It is one of those months where there is no real agenda attached.  You don't have any real holidays to celebrate, no pressure to perform.  You can just simply enjoy each day for the gift that it is.  A lot of the humidity of early summer disappears.  Later in the month subtle changes start showing up, letting you know that autumn is just around the corner.   There are usually meteor showers to enjoy (if you can stay up that late.)  Corn. Blueberries. Cucumbers. Tomatoes. Zucchini. Beans. Peas. Potatoes.  Peaches. Raspberries.  There is a lot of garden abundance to enjoy as well.

Cindy and I made a quick trip to the local farm market on Saturday morning, and I picked up my first corn of the season. They were selling them six ears for $5.  I did not need six ears, so gave three to Cindy and she gave me a couple cinnamon rolls in return. Family bartering. It works beautifully! I love it!

My sweet Nutmeg is pretty much back to acting normally now. I am so relieved. I was so concerned for him. I am grateful that things are back on an even keel. His appetite has returned, and he is running around almost as he was before this all started. Fingers crossed it continues!

We have had some lovely cooler nights for sleeping.  I have enjoyed that.  I don't mind it being hot during the day. I fully expect it at this time of year.  But I am not a huge fan of it being super-hot at night.  I like being able to sleep comfortably, and so far this summer (knock on wood) we have had very few nights when we could not sleep because of the heat and humidity. On the downside, we need rain, badly. Our province is now in a severe drought situation.

Attending church on Sundays and being able to partake of the sacrament, renewing my spiritual battery and my Baptismal covenants in a meaningful way. I love that we have this special time set apart each week for doing this. When we were in lockdown during Covid we were unable to do this.  Well, I was unable to do this as I had no priesthood in the home worthy of blessing and passing it.  It made me appreciate the sanctity of this blessed ordinance even more. I hope I never take it for granted.  I don't think I ever have or that I ever will. It is a time to remember the Savior in a very special way.

Sunday dinners with the family.  I always enjoy getting together with and sharing a meal with Cindy, Dad and Dan.  Yesterday Cindy cooked Meatloaf. It was delicious. As always. Of course, the best part, as always, is getting to enjoy this time with the people that I love.

Dad popped in to visit me on Saturday afternoon. Cindy and Dan had gone out to a friend's camp for the afternoon and Dad decided to pop by after his tea and donut at Tim Hortons. It was a nice surprise, and I really enjoyed his company. This was something I never got to experience when I lived so far away from everyone.  Neither thing. The dinners or the impromptu visits, trips to the farm market, etc.

Family. It is the best. A gift from God. I am so grateful for mine. I love them all very much.

Hummingbird visitors, and all of the other visitors I get.  Blackbirds. Mouring Doves. Bluejays. Chipmunks.  Woodpeckers, etc.

My wee little home. I am so grateful to have a place that I can call mine.

I am content. I have enough and then some to share. I am living a life filled with abundance.  Faith. Family. Pets. Friends. Home.  There is nothing I need more than that. Life is good.

British Sandwiches

There is nothing too awfully exciting in the Kitchen today. I am talking about British Sandwiches.  They enjoy different ones over there than we enjoy over here.  They have turned sandwich making into an artform. Sandwiches are one of their favorite foods!

I hope that your week ahead is filled with an abundance of small and wonderful things. May you be truly blessed.  Don't forget!
