The Simple Woman's Daybook . . .

FOR TODAY, May 15, 2018

Outside my window ...
The skies are blue, the sun is shining and there is a wood pigeon on my shed room cooing. Susan Branch says it sounds like "My Toe Hurts Betee." But I don't get that. I have tried listening to it on YouTube and everything.  But I just don't get it. It just sounds like a wood pigeon to me.  Sometimes we have two.

I am thinking ...
About all the fuss about Meghan Markles dad.  I don't get that either.  So the guy had some pictures taken of him trying on suits for the wedding. Duh.  Who cares.  He's her dad.  Its not every day somebody's daughter marries a Prince.  Let him be there. What does it matter?

In the kitchen ...

Cheese & Potato Pie. It uses nothing more than potatoes, eggs, cheese, milk, some green beans, onion and seasoning. Its a delicious Vegetarian main, that is simple to make, very tasty and low gi.  We love it.  New potatoes are low gi, and when you combine them with a protein (eggs) and fat (cheese) they become even more so.

On my "To Cook" list ...

Italian Pinwheels.  From Tornado Ali.  These look really tasty. I love wraps.

Good to know  ...

The Yummy Life. Instant Dry Soup Mixes.

I am creating ...

How to crochet a Pansy. From Let's Crochet.  These would make a lovely garland.

Who I am Designs, on Etsy.  Tiny envelopes.  Love these.

Broomstick Lace. I used to do this years and years ago. My first MIL taught me how to do it.  From Design Peak.

Hanging Herb Garden. The Country Chic Cottage.

A Fresh Squeezed Life.  DIY Fabric Covered Flower Pots.

I am reading ...

A Baby's Bones, by Rebecca Alexander

Archaeologist Sage Westfield has been called in to excavate a sixteenth-century well, and expects to find little more than soil and the odd piece of pottery. But the disturbing discovery of the bones of a woman and newborn baby make it clear that she has stumbled onto an historical crime scene, one that is interwoven with an unsettling local legend of witchcraft and unrequited love. Yet there is more to the case than a four-hundred-year-old mystery. The owners of a nearby cottage are convinced that it is haunted, and the local vicar is being plagued with abusive phone calls. Then a tragic death makes it all too clear that a modern murderer is at work…

I love a good mystery.  I love forensics.  I love this book.

Looking Forward to ...
Another set of missionaries for supper tonight. I'm using the slow cooker this time and making a steak and potato soup.  Plus homemade biscuits (my mom's recipe) and a chocolate dessert.  Also looking forward very much to the Royal Wedding on Saturday.  Can't wait to see her dress.

Dreaming about ...

Roses and ruffles  . . .

Hen Lamps  . . .

Daisy crowns, wicker purses and straw hats  . . .

A cottage in bloom  . . .

A cosy place to sit, put your feet up and read . . .

Something to watch ...

The Greatest Showman. We watched this last night and it was fabulous.  I love a good musical that gets your toes tapping! This was all that and more.

A place to visit ...

Port Meirion. This is a very pretty coastal village in Gwynedd, North Wales. It was designed and built by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis between 1925 and 1975 in the style of an Italian village, and is now owned by a charitable trust   Probably about  a couple of hours from where we live. We want to take a day trip there this summer if we can. The Rough Guide to Wales calls it a "visual poem."

  1. Hi, Marie! There's so much the boggles the brain doesn't it... from bird songs, to things in the news... :/ Ah, well... thank goodness for things like your Cheese & Potato Pie--YUM!! ;) Those Italian Pinwheel bites look very good too--nice for lighter summer eating. Your menu for the Missonaries tonight sounds sooo good and homey. :) Fun with those dried soup mixes. Our new cooker has a dehydrator setting, so I'm keen to try drying fruit and veggies! Those crochet pansies are adorable--I've not seen ones like those before! Very interesting with the broomstick lace. I think my Mom had a gadget for that... wish I had it now, though she did get me lots of her crochet hooks, which I do use and love. Fabric covered pots... who woulda thunk it?! Your new reading sounds very edge-of-your-seat...wow! Oh, those ruffled curtains are lovely... And how heartachingly cute is that bunny pic??!! Wishing you all a HAPPY week there, my sweet friend! :))) LOVE YOU LOTS!! ((LOVE & BIG HUGS))

  4. I do love your Daybook entries. I think I have told you that alot. I have been thinking of doing them again. I found them so fun.
Our weather sounds like yours today. We have had several days of rain and cold weather so today is beautiful. I always function better on sunny days.
The food all looks yummy; thanks for the links.
I think the crocheted pansy is so adorable. I want time to do something like this.
Great ideas for the herb garden and etc.
The book you are reading sounds like a really good one. I like a good mystery too and have't read one in a very long time.
Of course, I love your dreams. We do have the same tastes in so many things. I loved the straw hat photo, the chair and the curtains; sweet!
I have seen The Greatest Showman three times. I have taken children and grandchildren to it and a good friend.
I'm looking forward to the Royal Wedding too. It is a big thing here in America too. I can't wait to see her dress. I love all the hats they all wear. It is a shame they have to put in all the negative stuff. I hate media on some days.
The rabbit photo is adorable and lilacs are my favorite.
Sending you lots of love and hugs today dear friend!

  5. Hi Marie~

What a fun Daybook! We have had a couple of really nice days, which we have taken advantage of! I think I am almost done with planting...almost.

Your cheese and potato pie looks yummy! I'm always looking for a simple, quick meal, especially in the summer when things get hectic. We eat at such crazy times these days, and something quick is always a blessing. Today, we ate supper at 3:30, and had peaches and toast for a snack, along with a glass of kefir milk.

Those little crocheted pansies are adorable! I'm definitely going to give that patter a try...I love yellow pansies, and planted some in a pot today... :0)

last week, I bought some pretty fabric to make cafe curtains for my kitchen. I really need a change in my little kitchen. The curtains you showed remind me of my grandmother...she loved pretty curtains.

My daughter told me that there is a bird that just sasses her every morning! She said it says...I'm going, I'm going...OK! I think I know what bird she talking about, I hear it as well!

My lilacs are blooming and my yard smells heavenly! I have three lilac trees, but only one of them really blooms beautifully. I will post some pictures of it soon.

I wasn't a big fan of, The Greatest Showman... :0( I liked the music, but I thought it was out of context with the era...I'm funky that way. It was just ok for me. My granddaughter loved it!

Nothing better than a good mystery! What an interesting plot...I will for sure check it out!

Enjoy the missionaries, I can only imagine how wonderful it is to sit and eat dinner with you and Todd...what a comfort you guys must be to the missionaries.

Looking forward to the wedding as well...all the hoopla is crazy!! Just let them get married!

Much love to you, Marie!! XOXOXO

    Hugs and Love,
    Barb
