Small and Wonderful Things

  photo SMALLANDWONDERFULTHINGS_zps0c49db7e.jpg

"The world is fairly studded and strewn with pennies cast broadside from a generous hand. But who gets excited by a mere penny?...It is dire poverty indeed when a man is so malnourished and fatigued that he won't stoop to pick up a penny. But if you cultivate a healthy poverty and simplicity, so that finding a penny will literally make your day, then, since the world is in fact planted with pennies, you have with your poverty bought a lifetime of days. It is that simple. what you see is what you get." ~Anne Dillard

A few of the small and wonderful things which bring untold joy into my life.   It's the small things in life which truly mean the most.  Simple abundance . . . it's the best.

Sunny dry days and springtime blossoms which are popping up all over the place.  Yesterday was the most incredibly mild day and the sun shone the whole day through.  Today promises more of the same.   After the dull, grey, wet winter we have had this is so lovely to see.  I don't know anyone that isn't smiling!  Yay for sunshine!!

I spent half of last evening sniffling and snuffling into my hanky on the sofa.  Yes, it was the season finale of Call The Midwife series 3.  I won't give any spoilers away to my American friends, except to say that Series 3 is a really sniffle into your handkerchief series.     I cried during every episode.   You better buy in extra tissues.    I love Call the Midwife.   This is excellent television.  My only complaint being these British Series are far too short.  They need to make at least twice as many episodes!

Whatever will I do with my Sunday evenings now it's finished???

I'll just have to watch reruns of Inspector George Gently, and sigh over DS John Bacchus . . . .  I know I should be sighing over George Gently instead . . . I am old enough to be Lee Inglby's mom after all, but . . . there's  no accounting for  taste is there  . . .

Actually it's win/win because Martin Shaw as Inspector Gently, isn't too hard on the eyes either.   Swoon.

Yes ladies . . . my taste knows no bounds.

Move over Oreos, there's a new favourite in this house.    Border Biscuits Dark Chocolate Gingers.    Imagine the intense flavour of a gingery tongue tingling crunchy biscuit cloaked in a blanket of dark chocolate.    I am on a quest to replicate.   These are fabulously addictively wonderfully delicious.   Say no more.

The Waterlogue Ap on the ipad.   This is our cottage we lived in down south, waterlogued.   I love it!  It is such a fun ap to play with.  The only draw back is you end up spending hours turning all of your photographs into water colours.  Sigh . . .

Lura, she's home from the hospital which is a wonderful thing, but she still needs your prayers as she is not out of the woods yet.   This dear sweet friend has been through a horrendous month.  It's been so very difficult for her.  I am hoping that now she is home, healing will be even quicker.   Please continue to keep her in your prayers.

God's presence is ever beside you,
As near as the reach of your hand,
You have but to tell Him your troubles,
There is nothing He won't understand.
~Helen Steiner Rice

Prayer.  It's a small thing, but it's everything.  I am so grateful for the presence of prayer in my life.

A flight of fancy . . . come with me and we'll take tea . . .

 photo image_zps60d7ed4c.jpg

I had a little tea party,
This afternoon at three.
'Twas very small,
Three guests in all.
'Twas I, myself and me.

Myself ate up the sandwiches;
While I drank up the tea,
'Twas I who also ate the pie
and passed the cake to me.
 ~Jessica Nelson North

 photo image_zps9a84095a.jpg

Is there anything on earth that is quite so much fun as a tea party.  Oh, I do love them.  It would be so much fun to have a tea party together, just you . . . and me, and a few other friends.  We'd all put on our frilly hats and white gloves and best dresses . . .

 photo image_zps7f8273ff.jpg

I'd string coloured bunting across the back garden and we would sit there in the sunshine, watching it flutter in the warm spring breezes, whilst the sparrows, and the tits and the nut-hatches flew back and forth from the hedges to the feeders, and the black birds picked at the seed scattered on the ground, whilst the robin red breast scolded us all from his perch at the top of the garden shed . . .

 photo image_zpsaa30bad5.jpg

We'd feast on little sandwiches, cut just so, the perfect size to pick up with two white gloved fingers . . . filled with bits of egg and cress, and Chicken salad, sliced cucumbers and radish . . . and potted meats . . .

Just a few mind . . .

 photo image_zps5637d90c.jpg

We need to leave room for the strawberry scones . . . all buttery, fat and flaky . . .  and stogged full of sweet sugary berries . . . tart lemon frosting drizzled back and forth across those buttery tops . . .
crystal sugar sprinkles sparkling in the warm Spring sunlight as it flickers down upon our cap covered heads . . .

 photo image_zps7f3926f0.jpg

Not so dainty white cupcakes . . . their tops slathered in creamy white icing and crowned with big pink iced cabbage roses . . .  with crystaline leaves, so pretty and fair . . .

 photo image_zps36e50a6d.jpg

Little heart shaped cakes . . . layered with jam and buttercream, glazed with a tangy lemon glaze and then scattered with candied rose petals and violets . . .  yes please.   Just one or . . . possibly two . . .

 photo image_zps46845185.jpg

and hard to resist little decorated cookie bonnets, with ribbons and lace, and coloured glitter and candy sprinkles . . . oh go on . . .  far too pretty to eat, but we might manage just a nibble or two . . .

 photo image_zps320c9e0b.jpg

A plate full of pink macarons, tumbled against each other just so and scattered with rose buds . . . their sugary edges butting up against the other .  .  . little airy puffs of sugary goodness . . .  pinkies aloft . . .  perhaps just a few . . .

 photo image_zps3c070d48.jpg

Washed down with dainty cups of tea and mason jars of ice cold lavendar lemonade . . . oh yes, ice cubes clinking gently against the glass sides as pursed mouths sip gently along slender purple strip-ed straws, and strands of lavender brush against and tickle our noses . . .

Tis bliss, don't you think?   Oh how I wish that we could share some tea , just she . . . and her . . . and you . . . and me.

My Saturday Ramblings . . .

 photo image_zps5fe4a47c.jpg

I have always had a deep interest in reading and in studing the written word, and yes . . . in writing.  My father is the person who instilled in me my deep love of reading.   He read to me frequently from my children's books, often from the same one.  There was one story that he read to me so frequently that he still knows if off by heart and I can still hear him in my mind's eye reading it out loud, his voice high pitched and squeaking as he mimicked the different characters in the story.  This memory touches my heart in a deep and tender way.  Out of all of the gifts my parents gave to me . . . next to the love,  and my faith in the Saviour . . .  this was the most precious gift of all.  I cannot remember a time in my life when I did not have at least two books on the go that I am reading.

If you can read . . . you are never alone.    You never stop learning.  You get to visit and experience countless things, even if it's only ever within the realms of your imagination.  A good writer is capable of carrying you to lofty heights and amazing places, of inspiring every feeling and emotion within the  realms of the human experience, of painting imagery with their words that rivals even the most beautiful of paintings or photographs. . . . this is an amazing gift.

 photo image_zpsbefda151.jpg

I was blessed throughout the years to have teachers at school who also inspired in me  a love of reading the written word, and helped to instill in me a love of writing . . . stories, poems, letters, etc.  I can still recite poems memorized back in grade school . . .

Once there was an elephone who tried to use a telephone . . .The Wreck of the Hesperus . . . Gunga Din . . . amongst many.  My favourite one has always been this one . . .

I think that I shall never see
A poem as lovely as a tree

A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the sweet earth's flowing breast

A tree that looks to God all day
And lifts her leafy arms to pray

A tree that may in summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair

Upon whose bosom snow has lain
Who intimately lives with rain

Poems are made by fools like me
But only God . . . can make a tree.
~Joyce Kilmer

Even now I can remember all the words, and my heart is touched by them.

 photo image_zps3e0fc62b.jpg

This did not change in high school.  My best marks were always in English.  I loved studying Shakespeare and Tennyson, Walt Whitman, Tolstoy . . . novels such as To Kill a Mockingbird, Animal Farm, Lord of the Flies, Farenheit 451,  Pride and Prejudice, The Old Man and the Sea, Moby Dick . . . The Catcher in the Rye, The Grapes of Wrath . . . amongst the countless books which were required reading.

I had a fabulous High School English teacher named Mr Patterson.   His classes were different.   The desks were set out in a circle around the perimeters of the classroom so that we were all looking inward and across at each other and he was in the centre.   He made English literature exciting.   In his class we studied not only the required reading, but also musical prose . . . Jesus Christ Superstar, The Beatles Sgt Pepper's album, amongst others.  He taught us to see literature and prose all around us . . . in all of our experiences and environments . . .  in the music we loved to listen to . . .  in  . . . life.  He was, simply put . . . a great teacher.

When I went on to University, I studied Canadian Literature.   Margaret Attwood, Farley Mowatt, Mordecai Richler . . . Bliss Carmin, Leonard Cohen . . . I loved all of it and studing it.  I loved writing it.   Somewhere I still have a file folder of poetry that I wrote during that time, and when I look at it I think it's quite good actually . . .

 photo image_zps158019be.jpg

I've always loved writing little stories and poems.   I actually think in rhyme a lot of the time.  I don't know if that's unusual or not.   Maybe it's just further evidence that I am a bit odd . . . if anyone were to listen to me in the shower they would not hear me singing, but speaking in rhyme, making up little tales that I then dash to write down as soon as I get out of the shower.

There was an old lady
with a wart on her nose
in a baggy black dress
and wrinkled black hose . . .

That kind of thing you know.   That's the sort of thing I write now.  I keep them all in a notebook, and I have begun to illustrate a few, and I enjoy that too.  I was always making up stories for my own children at our nightly story time . . .  and now I write them for the grandchildren.   They don't always get to see them though, because of this awful habit I have of perfectionism which prevents me from showing them my words until I have penned them in just the right manner. . .

Yes, I am a bit odd, but I hope it's in a wonderfully endearing way.  ☺

We have two Baptisms to go to today, and then we are having supper out with some friends.   I will probably do a bit of baking here at home on the range . . .  I am thinking scones or some such.   In the meantime, here's a quote to carry with you through today.  (I do so love  quotes!)

This is a brilliant idea for keeping your floors clean and storing your wellies.  A tray filled with pebbles.   All the yuck drips down below the pebbles.   With the winter we have had this would have been a really useful tip!  Must remember it for next year!

Make your own homemade Kiss Gloss.  I found this on Cheeky Kitchen.  Just love that blog.   There is a little bit of something for everyone there.   Recipes.  Handy tips.  DIY.  Printables.  You name it.  Adore the name too!

And that's it for this week.   I have learned something about myself doing these Friday Finds posts.  I am a bit OCD.   I can't just show you two or three things.  I have to show you five or ten.  If I go over five, I can't stop at six, or seven or eight.   I find myself counting them and compelled to go on until I have exactly ten.  I guess I really am wierd!  (Or maybe we all have little touches of this???)

Guess who is EIGHT years old today!

Doesn't he have a beautiful smile.   Gabriel was my first grandchild.  He is responsible for turning me into a Grandmother!  I love that and I love him.  There's been six more since then, but he was the first and there is only ever one first.   I love all my grandchildren and celebrate their individuality and uniqueness.  Gabriel is one of the best "readers" I know.  When we were home two summers ago, Todd and I were so impressed with his ability to read these huge words.  Last year I sent him his very own story on his birthday about a Crackapotamus that I had written, this year I sent him a letter all about the special things about being and the number Eight.  I hope that he likes it.

Love my grandbabies.

People inspire me . . .

 photo 3086791_f5211_zps976f04ca.jpg

Do you know what today is?  It's Elizabeth Barrett Browning's 208th Birthday, or should I say the 208th anniversary of her birth.   One of the most beloved and remembered of the Victorian poets.   They say she was a laudenum addict, which is why her poetry is filled with such vived imagery.

“Earth's crammed with heaven... But only he who sees, takes off his shoes.”
~Elizabeth Barrett Browning

Whatever, the world would not quite be the same without her having been in it and sharing her talents, which still inspire today.   I could sit and read quotes from her work for hours . . . each one being as inspiring or more as the last.   That is talent . . . true talent.

 photo whosoloves_zps41ff35e5.jpg

That you can still inspire and affect a world one hundred and fourteen years after your death.  That is more than anyone can hope for.   To make a mark and a change for the better which withstands the test of time.

 photo Lura_zpsb06a8ca9.jpg

Speaking of people who make the world a better place by being in it, I want to speak of my good friend Lura, who has surely been given more than her share of health problems these past couple of years, beginning with the car accident she and her husband John survived three years ago.   She had her gall bladder removed around Valentines Day and what should have been a simple recovery had just been an ongoing nightmare and life threatening at times.   Please do continue to keep her in your prayers.   Yesterday they discovered that she had developed a large blood clot from the pic they had inserted in her arm to the middle of her chest, which was critical.   They are treating it now, but once again this is something which has set her healing back and prevented her from being able to go home.

I love Lura so very much.  She has been such a dear friend to me.   We call ourselves Sisters from different mothers.  She is one of those gems that you only meet on rare occasions in this life of ours.   A dear, sweet lady with a genuine heart of gold and a sincere love for all God's children.  Please pray that she will be well soon, and that she will be able to go home, where real recovery can begin.  These past few weeks have been a nightmare for her and her family.

Lura has been an inspiration to me ever since the first time I met her online.   Her cheerful outlook and attitude has lifted me up on many occasions.   I love her with all of my heart.

 photo SAM_3463_zps6f659cc3.jpg

This is Shaya.  It is a name which means God's gift.   Yesterday the doorbell rang and the postman was standing on my doorstep with a package for me.   I had no idea what it was, but when I opened it I found this little dear and a letter from my good friend Sybil.   I immediately broke into tears.   I thought to myself, I do not know what I have done to be so blessed in this life, to have such good and thoughtful friends as I have.  Knowing how much I love teddies and the colour pink. Sybil had seen this pattern and fallen in love with it.   She thought of me, she said . . . as soon as she saw it and wanted to knit it for me.  However, her friend Pam, knowing that dear Sybil is full of good intentions that often are not fulfilled (her words, not mine!) offered to knit it for her.    That someone would go out of their way to do this for me touches my heart in such a beautiful way.   I am so very blessed to have such kind people in my life.  Sybil is a dear, dear friend.  We have known each other since the AOL Journal days, which is quite a long time in the Internet World.   We have not had the luck to meet in person yet, but I live in hope that one day we will.  Thank you Sybil.   Your friendship and love mean the world to me.

Sybil is also a woman of inspiration.   Her writings have inspired me on many occasions.   She doesn't seem to blog any longer, but through her words I have been able to see and enjoy many things.   She is a dear sweet lady and I know with all of my heart that she has made a difference in all whose lives she has touched.  I love her to bits.

 photo 1309904_zps871355a2.jpg

Yesterday my Swedish friend, the other Marie, mentioned in her comment about a young Missionary from our church who had been killed a few days ago after a hit and run incident near her home.   This is a picture of that lovely young man, only 19 . . . Elder Mason Bailey, who died on Sunday.  He was an amazing young man by all counts and one only has to look at his face to see how special he was.   If you would like to read more about him you can find a story about him here.  All of our young people are surely amazing, and the mind boggles when you learn of something like this happening, a young man with so much potential being taken from us far too soon in life.   Elder Bailey would not want us to lose faith however.  He died serving the Lord and his fellow men, sharing a message that our Heavenly Father and the Savior want us all to hear . . .  that we have a loving Heavenly Father who knows each of us individually and loves us, that we have a Saviour who lives and is not dead, and who also loves us and seeks to help to bring us back into our Heavenly Father's presence once more.  The Gospel is true.   I know this with every fibre of my heart and my being, and Elder Mason Bailey did too.  I know there is a special place reserved for him in our Heavenly Father's mansion.

 photo p_zps0d2a9aac.jpg

Speaking of people who inspire, this is a woman named Ashlee.  In her own words, she is a mother, she is a daughter.   She is a sister.  She is a victim of murder and a victim of infidelity, and in my words she is an inspiration to all.  She writes a blog entitled "The Moments We Stand." Several years ago, as the mother of four young children, one a fairly newborn baby, the police knocked on her door and proceeded to tell her her husband was dead, and not just dead, but murdered.  Not by some random act of violence . . .  but by the husband of the woman her own husband had been having an affair with.  In those intervening years this dear sweet young woman has had to learn to forgive and to move on and she has done so with an amazing amount of faith.

My name is Ashlee. I am a victim of murder. Through a series of events and by two shots of a gun I was made a widow at the age of 28, my youngest just 6 weeks old. I am a victim of infidelity. I have felt unloveable. I have felt rejected. I have had days in my life that I wasn’t sure if I would ever take a breath again, let alone be able to raise my 5 children by myself. I have lived in fear. I have felt much heart ache. I have felt truly broken to my core. I have carried some heavy burdens... not only my own, but burdens put upon my shoulders by the death of my husband. I have felt alone. I have felt humiliated. I have been humbled to my knees. I have searched my soul to find my worth in this world and in the life I was left with. My world has been totally shattered. I have faced realities that I never knew were possible and found strength within myself to keep up the fight and live every day as if it was on purpose. I have been carried by Angels…both earthly beings and those unseen. I have found that being a “victim” doesn’t mean that we have an excuse to stop living. Being a victim means finding a reason for seeking a higher road. I have picked up the pieces left and carried on. I am a mother. I am a survivor.

This is a woman who is making a difference.   Who is taking the shattered pieces of her life and, by her example, using them to help others to stand tall and  to cling to the right.  She is another amazing young person who is making a difference.

Our world is filled with people who inspire.   Who make a difference.   Who stand for the right.   Who make the world a better place just by having been here.  Unsung heroes and heroines.  People may say that the world today is a horrible place filled with horrible and bad people, and they would not be wrong . . . but I say the opposite is also true, and that the world is more than filled with amazing and wonderful people.  People who inspire and uplift and make the things and the people they touch better for having touched them.  Today I honor these special spirits whoever and wherever they may be.

The cowboy with the white hat . . . he always wins, and good will always prevail.  Evil only wins when we let it win.
