OUTSIDE MY WINDOW ...

It is not quite as cold as it was yesterday morning. The skies are mostly clear. Scattered light rain showers are expected.  Dare we hope?

I AM THINKING ...

How can something so pretty be so poisonous? I have loved these toadstools since I was a little girl. My mother had Christmas Ornaments for our Christmas tree that had them.  They were my favorite ornaments. It was a wonder I did not wear the red paint and polka dots off them, I touched them so much. (We were not supposed to touch anything, but you know children.) I have loved these for a very long time. 

I AM ALSO THINKING ...

I must have had to get rid of 30 houseflies in my front windows yesterday. I don't know where they were coming from.  Great big ugly black houseflies. Mom always called them crack flies because they would just show up out of the blue, big and bumbling.  She thought they came in through cracks in the house. I don't know. I think they come in through the air exchanger personally. Annoying. They really are.

IN THE KITCHEN ...

Honey Roasted Peanut Butter Cookies.  This small batch recipe makes only 15 large cookies. They are dangerously delicious. Just saying!

Blackberries. I love blackberries. I was astonished at how many grew in the wild in the U.K. All the hedgerows were full of them. You could blackberry to your hearts content in the autumn.

So when a trader brings a coffle of smuggled slaves to Natchez, Cornelius buys a 10-year-old girl. She is mute and nameless, but she's all he can afford. He names her Jenny. 

 It quickly becomes apparent that Jenny will change life on the Cocodrie as much as it changes her. The winds of ambition are blowing everywhere, both among the whites, who strive for wealth and status, and among the slaves, who yearn for freedom. But dangers are everywhere, too. 

As madness and treachery reach from Natchez to the Cocodrie to blast all their dreams, Cornelius struggles to find a way to salvage his life and the lives of Jenny and Malachi as well.

Very well written.
