A Day Book . . .

FOR TODAY, February 25th, 2025

OUTSIDE MY WINDOW ...

My back window this morning. makes a change. The sun is just rising. Is 2 degrees above freezing and the sky is cloudy. It could get as high as 8 today, which is quite a bit warmer than yesterday.  Hopefully some of the snow will melt on the driveway.  They never did bother to clear it this time, so my driveway is layers of ice and snow. Admittedly they have not done the best job clearing the driveways this Winter, but it's an affordable roof over my head so I won't complain.

I AM THINKING ...

How blessed I am to be in my warm and cozy house this morning. God has been very good to me these past number of years. Every so often I do get afraid for the future, after all I am going to be 70 on my birthday, but then I remember that my Heavenly Father has not dropped me yet and He never will.  Faith.  Moving forward with faith is no small thing. It is everything. Over and over again in the scriptures we are told, "Your faith has made you whole. Your faith has healed you." etc. So, I have and exercise my faith daily, believing and knowing that He will take care of me. Always.

I AM ALSO THINKING ...

I am so blessed to have the means to do these small and simple things, most of which cost nothing but time. I am very content with my life. I have all that I need. I have all that I want. I am making the most of it all and enjoying the simple pleasures that each day brings to my table. I must work, but it is a work that brings me joy, most of the time anyways! They say that if you do what you love for work, then you never really work a day in your life.

OH MY GOODNESS ...

I think Red Squirrels are beautiful. We used to holiday in an area at the edge of the Yorkshire Dales that was a Red Squirrel conservation area. Did you know that in the summer their tails can bleached to white by the sun?  It's true. I have seen it.

I WISH ...

I wish I had one of those cinnamon rolls right now! Mmm

I AM READING ...

THE WORSE HARD TIME, by Timothy Egan

Egan tells an extraordinary tale in this visceral account of how America's great, grassy plains turned to dust, and how the ferocious plains winds stirred up an endless series of "black blizzards" that were like a biblical plague:

"Dust clouds boiled up, ten thousand feet or more in the sky, and rolled like moving mountains" in what became known as the Dust Bowl.

But the plague was man-made, as Egan shows: the plains weren't suited to farming, and plowing up the grass to plant wheat, along with a confluence of economic disaster—the Depression—and natural disaster—eight years of drought—resulted in an ecological and human catastrophe that Egan details with stunning specificity.

He grounds his tale in portraits of the people who settled the plains: hardy Americans and immigrants desperate for a piece of land to call their own and lured by the lies of promoters who said the ground was arable. Egan's interviews with survivors produce tales of courage and suffering: Hazel Lucas, for instance, dared to give birth in the midst of the blight only to see her baby die of "dust pneumonia" when her lungs clogged with the airborne dirt. With characters who seem to have sprung from a novel by Sinclair Lewis or Steinbeck, and Egan's powerful writing, this account will long remain in readers' minds.

Reading on my kindle.

  1. How cute is that button book! Milder here today, snow receding, drippy rain happening, temperatures around +5 Celsius. Red squirrels are the cutest to watch. I just know you will find the butter chicken recipe. Have a lovely day.
