Friday This and That . . .

This is my last day of having my daughter with me. I will take her back to her apartment tomorrow as her husband is due to come home in the afternoon.  We have enjoyed each other's company very much this week. Its been fun just spending the time together. We have laughed, a lot. We have talked, a lot. We have binge watched The Chosen, every day.  We are on the third series now and we will try to get it watched today as she doesn't have access to good internet at home and she really wants to see it all.

She has really enjoyed the cats and the cats have enjoyed her.  She would dearly love to have a cat, but her father has said no pets for them. I can understand that as they do go away a lot with the special Olympics and people's first organizations and cats are a tie. Any pet is a tie. You cannot go and leave them for long.  Also I think a pet would be a lot for them to handle in view of all the other things they need to look after, like their apartment.  Her husband is quite child-like in many ways and so is she really, although I do think her to be much more capable than him.  But maybe that is just because I am her mother.

She has enjoyed watching Chippy come each day to gather his nuts, and the humming bird's aerial shows.  That is not something she gets to see where she lives at the moment. They are in an apartment on the top floor of the building. She says that if and when they get their bungalow (they are on a waiting list) she is going to get a hummingbird feeder and she is going to plant a garden and she is going to  . . .  I told her, she has an awful lot of plans for when they get their bungalow!  Even if she gets to do half of what she has planned that will be a lot!

I do hope that they are able to get a bungalow.  They are low rental places and as they are getting a lot older, it will be a lot easier for then than going up all those stairs every day.  Grocery day must be a real struggle.

We have not done near all the things we wanted to do, but that's okay. We have had fun together.  Today she is taking me out to lunch, her treat. I keep teasing her and telling her I am going to have a big steak.  She laughs and says that's okay.  I won't, but it is fun to joke with each other.

I got her a sleep machine like the one I have.  It plays a noise in the background and helps you fall to sleep.  She was pretty happy about that.  I like mine. I keep it on the fan sound and have never really tried the others.  She did have hers on the bird sounds one night, but the cats were terrified of the noises the birds were making and kept going to her door to check it out and then running away.  So she changed the sound.

We both picked up some of these at the Home Hardware. This is the time of year that fruit flies start becoming a problem. I have had them pestering me for about a week or so now.  So far it works very well.  And it looks a lot nicer on the countertop than the bowl of vinegar full of dead fruit flies.  I had gone into Home Hardware to pick up some more ant traps as I found another ant yesterday, saw these and came home with them. They had no ant traps. Ants have been a real problem this year I guess.

Eileen got some for her place as well.

I have tried to teach her about healthy eating habits without it seeming like I am lecturing her. I have made healthy meals for us and made some suggestions. She is quite large at the moment and she says "Pre-diabetic," but she is on metformin.  I don't think that they put you on that if you are "Pre."  I have snuck brown rice into her without her knowing it and told her afterwards, after she enjoyed it.   This is not something she would even try because its "brown" rice.  I have tried to teach her that "white" is the enemy. In bread, pasta and in rice.  That carbs are okay, in limited amounts, but we need to pick our carbs carefully and the lower GI we choose them, the better.   Its not just about avoiding sugar. Many things that don't seem sugary are converted into sugar in our bodies.

I hope that she has taken some of that in.

Every Wednesday there is a craft and natter meeting at my church.  Its just a few ladies getting together and crafting (knitting, crochet, etc.) and visiting with each other. I had hoped that she would go with me.  Initially she said she would, but then she got really anxious about it and it turned out she was afraid that her father would see my car at the chapel and she would get in trouble. (He lives not too far from the chapel.)

I don't know how he would even know what my car looks like, but she was afraid anyways, so we didn't go. I did not want to make her feel anxious or stressed. For all I know she was made to promise that she would not have anything to do with my church before she was even allowed to come and stay with me. And she is a person who keeps her promises. I cannot fault her for that!

The best lessons are taught by example and I would hope that I have been able to show her by my example throughout this week that Latter Day Saints are not evil and I am not on a fast track to hell.

Yesterday I had to take my sister to the Vet with Little Mac for his checkup. Eileen had to work.  After her work I picked her up and we came home. I had made us a nice dinner.  Then we took some of it over to my friend Glenna. She is our cousin and I wanted Eileen to meet her.  We had a quick visit. Glenna is doing really well and has been given permission to drive again locally.  I hope that Eileen enjoyed our visit together. She seemed to.

On this, our last day together, we are going out to lunch, binging the rest of The Chosen. I am going to blitz a whole loaf of bread into crumbs for her to put into her freezer at home so she can make the Newfie stuffing she loves. Maybe we can go through my freezer and I can give her a few things that she and Tim would like. We can do her laundry so that she is going home with clean clothes. And we can just plain enjoy each other's company.  It will all be back to normal tomorrow, after a couple of very busy weeks for me.

Busy but good. My heart has been very full. It's been a great 10 days.  They went fast!

I know, not my normal Friday Finds post, but sometimes its good to shake things up a bit and do something different.

I hope that you have a lovely day today.  I heard there was tornados in Ottawa yesterday. I believe that is the second day this summer. Hopefully all my friends and family in the Ottawa area are okay!  We live in scary times.  Our weather seems up the shoot! Whatever you get up to today, stay safe and be happy. Don't forget!

My Favorite Things . . .

Sharing today a few things that I really love to do, eat, experience, enjoy  . . .  maybe you will enjoy them too.

Me pushing my sister around in my
doll carriage, circa 1961

She's not a thing, but she is my favorite person on the whole earth.  My sister Cindy. She, who stops by just to clip my cat's claws. Who is ready to drop whatever and come running the minute you need her. She with the twinkling eyes and beautiful smile and warm, warm heart.  She, who I can tell all my secrets to and know she will never judge me. She, who I know will always give me the best advice possible. She, who means the world to me, and not just because of the things she does for me and for others, but because of the good person that she is. I love her. She may not be able to walk on water, but she is the most "Christ-like" person I know.

Wednesday Witterings

August is like the Sunday of Summer.
~Unknown

Here we are in the month of August. Summer is on the wane.  This is the month of typically hot temperatures, but without all of the humidity of July. Nights begin to get a bit cooler, and days that tiny bit noticeably shorter as the sun dips lower in the sky.  Last night the temperature went down to 12. I do not mind the cooler nights for sleeping.  Hot and sticky has never been my thing!

I found a few more charges on my credit card that had gone unnoticed.  I must pay better attention in the future.  One was for over $400 to an electrical store in Montreal.  Overall there was close to $1500 in false charges on my card and then a $29 fee from my credit card company for going over the limit. Thankfully that is all being erased.

They said that probably some company that I had ordered from online had had their accounts hacked. The only place different that I ordered from this month was Bath & Body Works. They had three wick candles on for half price and so I had ordered a few. I do love a smelly candle.  I will never know for sure, but it does make one feel very dubious about ordering things online.

Cindy, Eileen and I had a lovely time in Margaretville yesterday afternoon. It was beautiful and sunny and the perfect way to start the month of August.  Eileen and I sat at a picnic table by the water, just looking out and watching the waves and gulls, taking in that fresh sea air.  Cindy had brought her sketching pads, etc. and sketched a few pictures to paint. I cannot wait to see what she does with them. She is just so talented.   It was lovely and relaxing and a beautiful change of scenery.

There were a lot of people walking their dogs on the beach. Some very big and beautiful dogs.  A couple went swimming in the water. It was fun to watch them.  An older couple came down with their teenage daughter and she bravely went in for a dip.  The father said to us something about young people being crazy.  I detected a New England accent.  We do get a lot of New Englanders come up here to spend their summers.

Afterwards we left the beach area and looked through the artists shack that is there.  There are so many talented people about.  It was just a really nice afternoon, and the best part was spending it with people I love.

We are going to have a fairly quiet day today.  Eileen is going to work on her diamond painting craft that she brought and I am going to do a bit of baking. Of course there are always house chores to do.  Then later this afternoon we are meeting my dad and his friend Hazel at the Chinese restaurant for supper. Cindy will be there also.  I will go a bit earlier because I want to move some money around and then I promised Eileen I would take her to Dollarama. She will enjoy that.

Our week together is passing by far too quickly.  She works tomorrow.  I am taking Cindy and Little Mac to the vet in the morning.  I might try to do a tea party for Eileen for our supper tomorrow night. I think she would enjoy that.  It will be fun.  Friday she is taking me out to lunch. Her treat and we will be doing a few things together.  She really likes the Newfoundland stuffing my sister and I make and she doesn't have a food processor at home. We are going to get a loaf of bread and turn it into crumbs so that she can put them in her freezer and use them to make some of the stuffing whenever she wants.  I think we will also go down to Mom's grave and pay a visit.  Then Saturday, it is time for her to go home, as Tim will be returning from Ontario with his mum.  Our ten days together will be at an end.

I am sure we will do it again sometime.  Tim will be going to the Nationals for the Special Olympics and she will be on her own then, so she will probably come and stay with me again then.

I have a Facebook page for my English Kitchen blog. I update it every day with my newest recipe and a few of my older recipes.  I have an easy friendship with most of my readers. Occasionally I get some crackpot in there or a negative Nelly, but for the most part it all works well. I have always tried to make it my policy to respond to every comment. I figure if someone can take the time to comment, then I can take the time to respond. It is good manners.

The Facebook police put me in a time out the other day or responding to too many comments. What the heck? It doesn't really make sense where some spamming man can come in and leave identical spam phishing comments on every woman's post who leaves a comment, and me, who actually runs the page, gets put into a time out. I am constantly having to remove and block them.  They just move to another computer and come back in, and Facebook does nothing to stop them. Its insane.

I would get off the Facebook altogether were it  not for the fact that I talk to my sister/brother/British friends on the messenger app, and of course my EK page which helps to generate visits to the EK and gives me income.

This is the season for Queen Anne's Lace.  I have always loved this pretty flower that many see as a weed.

"Daucus carota, whose common names include wild carrot, European wild carrot, bird's nest, bishop's lace, and Queen Anne's lace (North America), is a flowering plant in the family Apiaceae. It is native to temperate regions of the Old World and was naturalized in the New World.

Both Anne, Queen of Great Britain, and her great-grandmother, Anne of Denmark, are taken to be the Queen Anne for whom the plant is named. It is so called because the flower resembles lace, prominent in fine clothing of the day; the red flower in the center is said to represent a droplet of blood where Queen Anne pricked herself with a needle when she was making the lace."

QUEEN-ANN'S-LACE

Her body is not so white as
anemony petals nor so smooth—nor
so remote a thing. It is a field
of the wild carrot taking
the field by force; the grass
does not raise above it.
Here is no question of whiteness,
white as can be, with a purple mole
at the center of each flower.
Each flower is a hand's span
of her whiteness. Wherever
his hand has lain there is
a tiny purple blemish. Each part
is a blossom under his touch
to which the fibres of her being
stem one by one, each to its end,
until the whole field is a
white desire, empty, a single stem,
a cluster, flower by flower,
a pious wish to whiteness gone over—
or nothing.

~William Carlos Williams

My sister has quite a lot of it growing in her garden. Every year I say I am going to pick some to dry, and every year I forget until it is too late. Maybe this year I will remember!

The Hummingbirds are becoming quite entertaining again. I have had to fill my feeder twice this week. I make a simple syrup using 1/4 cup  of sugar and 1 cup of boiled water.  They seem to really enjoy it.  We have been watching them each evening, which is when they seem to be the most active.  They fly about the feeder and battle each other.  One is always predominant and I have seen her sit and just watch for another bird to come close, which she promptly will chase away. The odd time a male will make it to the feeder when she is not there. It is very easy to tell them both apart.  They are such fun to watch and a really special part of my summer.

Remembering my babies when they were really small and first came to live with me. It is almost two years now since.  They are big cats now, especially Nutmeg.  He is my shadow.  The other day when I was feeling poorly and laying on my bed, he was right in there with me, laying nestled into my side. I think he could tell I was feeling poorly.

Cinnamon likes to help me make my bed every morning. Well, she thinks she is helping me.  She dances across the covers as I try to pull them up and tuck everything in. She is so cute.   She is very independent as you know, but loves bed making. She also loves laundry.  She just loves getting into the basket when I am trying to fold it.

I never get frustrated or impatient with them.  They are such a sweet part of this life I have built for myself and I love them dearly. I don't think I would ever want to be without a pet.

Well,  I must be about my day. Eileen is still sleeping.  The cats are prowling about, and I have much to do before we are off and out this afternoon.  I will leave you with a thought for today  . . .

Sometimes I go on adventures . . .

Suddenly, the fairy stood before her.
"Take heart," she said,
"all will go now well."
~French Folktales

I had a pretty exciting day yesterday, and not in a way that I really expected to or wanted to, but all was well in the end. Sometimes I take the most unexpected adventures.

I hadn't slept very well on Sunday evening.  Sometimes I get bad indigestion and it wakes me up. That's what it was like all Sunday  night.  It went off yesterday morning or so I thought. I had a bit, but nothing too bad. I got Eileen off to work and went to the grocery store and then came home and made two recipes for the blog, took the photos, etc.  But then it started again and it wasn't going off.

And then it was accompanied with me feeling cold and clammy, and increasing in frequency. A sharp pain in the upper left part of my chest.  I began to think that I was having a heart attack. By now it was noon.  I called my sister at work and told her I wasn't feeling well and wasn't sure what to do. My main concern was who would pick up Eileen after work.

I started thinking, what if I die here and nobody goes to pick her up, what will happen to her?

My sister said she was almost done work and would be over shortly.  So I went in the bedroom to lay down, but they were not going off. These pains were getting worse. I decided to call 911.  They told me to chew four baby aspirin (which I just happened to have) and put my cats in a secure spot and make sure my front door was unlocked.

My sister got her just before the ambulance, so not long really, and before I knew it, four young female paramedics were in my bedroom checking me over.  By then the pains were coming almost one on top of the other, which, as you can imagine, was making me really anxious.  I haven't even had my will done yet.  That made me even more anxious.

We decided that I should go to the emergency.  The hospital in town was closed, so that meant me going to Kentville. (Our hospital emergency room is only open Weds - Fri from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. God help you if you get sick at any other time.)

Once I got in the ambulance and on the way, they started to ease a bit.  I had very few after I arrived at the hospital. They did blood tests, an ECG, and a chest x-ray.  Then after a bit a Doctor came to talk to me.  There was nothing wrong with my heart. No explanation really.  I was okay to go home.

My sister had picked up Eileen and they were in the waiting room, so they went to tell her I could go and we came home.  I have no explanation for it other than it must have been an anxiety attack of some sort.  Probably due to the anxiety over my credit card and the constant anxiety  I feel about my employment.  (Most of the time that is not at the forefront of my mind, but it is always there.) I need to figure out a way to control that better.

Anyways, to make a long story short. We came home.  Cindy went back to her place to get supper for Dad. (Bless her, she is so good to all of us.) And Eileen and I put together some supper.  We had a very quiet evening.  I had a cbd gummy about 6 p.m. which really relaxed me and I slept like a log last night.  I feel so much better this morning.

I suppose in one way or another I have been under a lot of stress these past few years and it was bound to come out eventually. Hopefully it will be okay now.  I used to get stuff like this periodically when I was in the UK and it always ended up being nothing. Just anxiety.  I don't have a family Doctor, but I am going to see a Doctor at the clinic next week. I will talk to her about what happened and all the stress I have been under, maybe there is something they can do for me.  I don't want to take pills for it though. I take enough meds for everything else already.

Anyways, that was my adventure for the year.  A great way to end the month of July. Hah!  I am so grateful for a sister who was there for me. I hope she knows how much I love and appreciate here. She goes above and beyond. I wish that I could do more for her. I know she doesn't expect anything, but I really wish that I could.  She is a treasure and she deserves a lot more out of life than what she has gotten.  I do not want to be a burden to her.  She has enough with taking care of my father.  I will think of something.

Oh, and I am so grateful for the ambulance service who arrived in such a timely manner and took such good care of me.  God bless them.

Today is going to be a very quiet day.  We had planned (Eileen, Cindy and myself) on going up to the shore.  Cindy was going to sketch and we were just going to enjoy being by the seaside. I think we will still do that. Eileen has to work until 11:30 so we will pick her up then and go.  I think I need to do more than just work all the time. A bit of play should become a part of my routine I think!

And with that I will leave you with a thought for the day . . .
