A Day Book . . .

FOR TODAY, September 9th, 2025

OUTSIDE MY WINDOW ...

I had visitors yesterday.  This is the closest they have been to my deck. They are quite large. Almost the size of a turkey. They really are funny little creatures.  I have no idea who owns them, but they come through here just about every morning.  The cats love watching them.

It's only 7*C this morning. (That's 44.6*F) So quite chilly. I have my front door open letting in fresh air. I won't be able to do that for much longer as the temperatures continue to drop with the passing days.

I AM THINKING ...

I am not usually one to mix up appointments or forget dates. I went to the grocery store early yesterday morning and then got back here and was putting everything away when the doorbell rang and it was Jenni to do my toenails. I had thought the appointment was for today.  We got it done anyways, but I was a bit flummoxed that I should mix that up. I looked at my calendar and it clearly was marked yesterday.  I don't know how I was so mistaken!

Things like that worry me. I don't want to get dementia.

I AM ALSO THINKING ...

They are finally starting to make a bit of headway with the wildfire from what I read yesterday. I is still out of control but becoming more manageable. Also, I am finally getting a handle on the gnats. At least I feel like I am. Not as many yesterday and only a few this morning.  I have my fingers crossed this trend continues.

Easy Curried Orange Chicken

IN THE KITCHEN ...

Easy Curried Orange Chicken.  This is a recipe I made yesterday from one of my Vintage cookbooks. Its a tasty recipe that I have been making off and on for years now.  Since the 1970's. I had forgotten how easy to make and how delicious it was. My family always loved this.

ON MY "TO COOK" LIST ...

Mediterranean Chicken Gyros with Creamy Feta Tzatziki Sauce.  From Recipe Wonders. These look really delicious. I am not sure if it is AI or not. It is getting harder to tell.

THIS I BELIEVE ...

Change begins with us. If we start here, right where we stand, then eventually things will get better. We cannot bury our heads in the sand and think it will go away. We live in such a toxic world at present.  I worry for the legacy left to my grandchildren and their children after. Where are the good men? The good leaders? They are becoming very rare.

I AM READING ...

SPINNING JENNY, by Sylvia Ann McLain

Book one of the Spinning Jenny series

"I guess I'll name you Jenny, something I can say easy. That was my mammy's name, anyway. Jenny. You be Jenny from now on..." Cornelius Carson's mother cautioned him never to own slaves, but in 1830s Louisiana, land and slaves are proof of a man's worth.

At 23 Cornelius is ambitious, and in love. He owns one elderly slave, Malachi, and a small cotton farm along Bayou Cocodrie. And he plans to marry Stephanie Coqterre, daughter of a wealthy Natchez planter. He needs another field-hand, but prices are high. So when a trader brings a coffle of smuggled slaves to Natchez, Cornelius buys a 10-year-old girl. She is mute and nameless, but she's all he can afford. He names her Jenny.

It quickly becomes apparent that Jenny will change life on the Cocodrie as much as it changes her. The winds of ambition are blowing everywhere, both among the whites, who strive for wealth and status, and among the slaves, who yearn for freedom. But dangers are everywhere, too.

As madness and treachery reach from Natchez to the Cocodrie to blast all their dreams, Cornelius struggles to find a way to salvage his life and the lives of Jenny and Malachi as well.

Very well written.

    1. I think she always plays strong assertive women, well for the most part anyways. Even when she was on Coronation Street playing Karen McDonald. Thanks Monique! I have a great memory for stupid useless information as well! Makes me a great Trivial Pursuit partner! xoxo

    1. Chicken is my protein of choice most of the time Elizabeth! The breasts have been really tough lately. I don't know that the problem is with them, and everyone says the same thing. Brining is necessary before cooking them! xoxo

    1. I did and was shocked at the end. I try to give grace wherever possible though, and she was under a lot of stress. I would not trust that person again, however. It was a great watch! (Trying not to give away any spoilers! haha)

  6. With all that has been going on with you, it is no wonder you get days mixed up. But at least you were there when she arrived, so no harm done. Much cooler in the mornings now, 4 Celsius when I got up. I'm going to start putting away garden decorations while it is nice, instead of waiting a few weeks till it is much cooler. I don't put out as much anymore, and it is only us that enjoy it now. A bit of grocery shopping to do today, won a $250 gift card at Walmart, so will go there. Love things that are free. Enjoy the day.

    1. What a bonus! Lucky you! Our local Walmart doesn't carry a lot of groceries, but I could sure put a dent in a $250 gift card given the chance! Happy days! xoxo
