Wednesday Witterings . . .

How wonderful it has felt these last few days to be back in the world of the living and active again. I am not sure if everyone experiences the side effects that I did over the past six or seven weeks. (It seemed like forever) but it really was quite debilitating. I felt trapped in my house and on the sofa, unless I was in the bathroom. I couldn't go anywhere for the most part. I couldn't stand up for very long at all. I was held prisoner by my kidneys and bladder.  I will not lie. I had moments where I felt that if this was going to be me, for the rest of my life, I did not want to be here. (I know. I am such a drama queen.)

I will never take just being able to do simple ordinary things, chores, cooking, walking, going to the store, etc. for granted again. And I hope and pray that I never have to go through this again.  I am back in the world of the living now and will do whatever I can to avoid a repeat of the same said scenario.

I have a jug of lemon water in the fridge and I drink from it frequently. No salt. No pop. No sugar. I'm doing what I can. My friend Jackie says I need to drink distilled water, but, from all of the research I have done, there is no evidence to support that theory. So I am not too sure about that.

We have spent several days now cloaked in a marshmallow world. Monday in anticipation of the storm, much was cancelled and yesterday in the aftermath of the storm things were likewise cancelled as the cleanup began. It was the craziest thing.  Eileen and I were sitting here on Monday afternoon looking at a clear sky and just a few minutes later we couldn't see across the street for the snow and the blowing and it kept up all the rest of the day and into the night. I was awake at 4:30 a.m. while the snow plow was clearing out the parking lot of the farm market behind me. Noisy and so much light. Thankfully I was able to fall back asleep.

Right now it is -12*C/11*F so quite cold, but temperatures are supposed to rise and they are calling for a week or snow and or rain over the next 6 days or so. It's clear at the moment.

After all of the fires of last summer, I am not going to complain about precipitation of any kind. That was super scary. We don't want a repeat of that.

Its hard to believe that we are staring the end of February in the face.  Wasn't it just yesterday that we were ringing in the bells of the new year? Its going by ever so quickly, but (aside from health issues) there have been some really lovely things so far this year.  One was having my oldest son and his two boys come to visit. I really enjoyed that and another was having my middle son and his oldest son come to visit. Those were really lovely things. I have two very good sons there . . .  kind and caring, loving individuals. And of course I love all of my grandchildren to pieces. (My children too!)

Eileen seems to be doing very well. On the surface anyways. I am very proud of her. I thought it would be a lot harder to live together than it has been. Not because of her, but because of me and how I am set in my ways and how I have become so used to being on my own. She is not a very difficult person to live with. I could quite happily do this for the rest of my life, just she and I, but the truth is that were I to pass, she could not afford to continue to live in this unit. It is far too expensive, and I think far too big for her to care for on her own. It is best that she gets her own place, but I told her she needn't be in a hurry to find a place. Good things come to those who wait and I want her to find a place that is just right for her.

It worries me that her money etc. is still in the shared account with Tim. They had considerable savings together and of course their pensions both go into that shared account.  I hope that their workers are able to get everything sorted soon and equally. I know it is really none of my business, but I really don't like to think of him as having access to it all and ending up with it all. It's enough that he has kept their apartment and everything in it. I am sure things will be sorted soon. At least I hope that they will. It is early days yet.

The community groups that I belong to on Facebook have had lots of photographs lately of "bobcats" or "mountain lions." I am not sure which they are.  Big cats in any case.

This is one photograph that someone posted of one looking into their back door. There have been cougar sightings as well. I am glad that my cats are indoor cats. I did not have a cat in the U.K. as it was impossible to keep them inside the house there.  Windows did not have screens and there were no screen doors, so in the warmer weather you had to keep them open and cats just came and went as they pleased. A dog was much easier to control and keep safe.

I watched a program once on cats and they had put these collars on some domesticated cats that registered all of their travels in a day. It was amazing just how many miles those animals travelled. They each had their own territories as well.

I found it quite fascinating. I love to watch programs of this type.

There has been a lot of discussion growing online about how 2026 will be the year of broadening our minds. Of people becoming more culturally and intellectually curious in a way that heightens lives in a deeper and more meaningful way. Many people are becoming discontented with quick content and surface level scrolling. People are craving more depth and wanting to feel stimulated, inspired and connected to ideas that help to stretch them beyond their immediate lives.

People are wanting to know more, to learn more, experience more.  Especially when it comes to their homelife. This, as you can imagine, is right up my alley. I am a homebody if nothing else and I am always looking for ways to make my homelife richer and more meaningful.

Adding culture and different types of knowledge to your daily life does not require dramatic reinvention. It can begin with something as simple as reading ten pages of a thoughtful, life-enriching book before bed instead of doom scrolling on your phone, listening to a podcast about art, history, or philosophy as you sit and knit or crochet, or even choosing to watch a documentary film about something you know nothing about.

Small, yet consistent exposure to new ideas and things can help to reshape our lives and the way we look at the world around us. It can make all the difference between "merely existing" or "actually living" our lives.

I am in awe of Glenna across the road. She is constantly on the go.  She goes to the theatre down in Annapolis often to take in the shows that are on there, takes music lessons, painting classes, enrolls in exercise classes at the local community college, etc. I want to be more like Glenna.

When we prioritize culture and experiences in our "everyday", our lives can and will become less passive and more engaged with the world around us. I'm absolutely convinced of this. Conversations become richer, our inner worlds more textured, and our lives become much more expansive. "WE" become much more interested and much more interesting.

And with that I will leave you with a thought for the day . . .

Easy Ham Hash

New in the kitchen today, Easy Ham Hash. I had picked up a ham steak on Saturday when I went shopping with the idea in mind to make several recipes with it. This was one of them. This came out delicious, but then again, I love hash of any kind! We enjoyed this yesterday with some of my sister's home baked beans and biscuits. It was a simple, hearty and economical meal.

I hope you have a lovely Wednesday. We are hoping to get out for supper with Cindy and Dad tonight.  I have really missed doing that. We will see what happens.  Stay safe and warm, no matter what you get up to. Don't forget!

A Day Book . . .

FOR TODAY, FEBRUARY 24th, 2026

OUTSIDE MY WINDOW ...

We did get the storm that was predicted yesterday. I am not sure how much snow we actually got, a fair bit, but it was blowing about like crazy.  There were times we couldn't even see across the road. It came on all of a sudden about 1:30-ish yesterday afternoon. My cleaners were supposed to be coming today but have been rescheduled to come Thursday instead.

I AM THINKING ...

Spring is just around the corner. We are nearing the end of February now. March winds doth blow. There was a little junco at the feeder yesterday. He stayed for quite a while and kept coming back. That was promising. I had stopped feeding the birds a few years back (except for the hummers) because the lady down at the end said they attracted rats. That's as may be, but I love bird watching and I have decided that I am not going to let someone else dictate the joys in my life because of someone else's negative thinking.

I AM ALSO THINKING ...

The other day someone who is trying hard to get their Facebook Page off the ground messaged me and asked me how did I keep from being discouraged by lack of interest, etc. I told them that they needed to decide "why" they wanted to do their page. I do mine simply because I enjoy sharing. Whether 10 people look at it or 100 people look at it. I don't pay attention to numbers. I just love sharing recipes. And connecting with people. If you love what you do, then the people who follow/read you will feel that love. Popularity is a double edged sword and comes with a layer of negativity. I would rather not have that. I am content to have just a small number of like minded, loyal invisible friends. I want my FB group to feel like home and safe for those who are interested in all things of the home, but in particular in cooking.

I AM GRATEFUL FOR ...

The opportunity I have to help my daughter get back on her feet emotionally and physically. This is a great blessing to me and I thank God for it every night. I also ask God to help me to be the best support and help for her that she needs. I hope that I am.

I AM ALSO GRATEFUL FOR ...

This opportunity that we are having together to foster our relationship and grow it even stronger than it was before. I love my daughter so very much. We have always been quite close. There was a few months where we were not so close, due to Covid and attitudes, but thankfully we were able to rise above that.

Curried Chicken & Coconut Rice Casserole

IN THE KITCHEN ...

Curried Chicken & Coconut Rice Casserole. This is a delicious one‑dish wonder. Tender pieces of chicken bake along with fragrant coconut rice, gently seasoned with curry powder, garlic, and herbs. As it cooks, the rice absorbs the creamy coconut milk and chicken juices, becoming rich, fluffy, and full of warm spice. Garnished with toasted flaked almonds, spring onions and a lush lime yogurt drizzle. Very nice.

ON MY "TO COOK" LIST ...

Taco Bell Taco Salad.  Eileen would love this.  From The Country Cook.

THIS I BELIEVE ...

You reap what you sow. It costs nothing to be kind and caring and those acts themselves are their own reward.

SOMETHING THAT IS NICE ...

Routine. I love routine. Within reason of course. If a great opportunity presents itself then I am quite happy to break my routine!

SOMETHING ELSE THAT IS NICE ...

The ordinary, simple things of everyday life. Laced with kindness, caring and love.

I AM WANTING TO CREATE ...

A bunting draped heart . . .

Spun cotton strawberry pins  . . .

Button flowers  . . .

Cute gift tags  . . .

Junk journals  . . .

SOMETHING I ENJOY ...

Raggedy Dolls. I used to love making them and bringing them to life.

SOMETHING ELSE I ENJOY ...

I AM READING ...

THE CORRESPONDENT, by Virginia Evans

“Imagine, the letters one has sent out into the world, the letters received back in turn, are like the pieces of a magnificent puzzle. . . . Isn’t there something wonderful in that, to think that a story of one’s life is preserved in some way, that this very letter may one day mean something, even if it is a very small thing, to someone?”

 Filled with knowledge that only comes from a life fully lived, The Correspondent is a gem of a novel about the power of finding solace in literature and connection with people we might never meet in person. It is about the hubris of youth and the wisdom of old age, and the mistakes and acts of kindness that occur during a lifetime.

 Sybil Van Antwerp has throughout her life used letters to make sense of the world and her place in it. Most mornings, around half past ten, Sybil sits down to write letters—to her brother, to her best friend, to the president of the university who will not allow her to audit a class she desperately wants to take, to Joan Didion and Larry McMurtry to tell them what she thinks of their latest books, and to one person to whom she writes often yet never sends the letter.

 Sybil expects her world to go on as it always has—a mother, grandmother, wife, divorcee, distinguished lawyer, she has lived a very full life. But when letters from someone in her past force her to examine one of the most painful periods of her life, she realizes that the letter she has been writing over the years needs to be read and that she cannot move forward until she finds it in her heart to offer forgiveness.

 Sybil Van Antwerp’s life of letters might be “a very small thing,” but she also might be one of the most memorable characters you will ever read.

I only read in bed at night and I keep falling asleep.

Small and Wonderful Things . . .

"The world is fairly studded and strewn with pennies cast broadside from a generous hand. But who gets excited by a mere penny? It is dire poverty indeed when a man is so malnourished and fatigued that he won't stoop to pick up a penny. But if you cultivate a healthy poverty and simplicity, so that finding a penny will literally make your day, then, since the world is in fact planted with pennies, you have with your poverty bought a lifetime of days. It is that simple. What you see is what you get." ~Anne Dillard

 A few of the small and wonderful things which bring untold joy into my life. It's the small things in life which truly mean the most. Simple abundance . . . it's the best.

(Eloise Wilken)

I was able to go grocery shopping on Saturday and never needed to use the loo the whole time. I walked all through the store, etc. no problems. This was not really a small thing, it was huge!  I had not been out to do anything like that since early January.

I was also able to go to church yesterday and stay for the full two hours.  Being able to partake of the sacrament with the others, being able to go to Relief Society, and to be able to do so comfortably without fear of having an accident was also huge. I was so grateful to finally be able to attend both. What a great blessing to me it was.

I have been enjoying having Eileen here with me.  I thought it would be a lot more difficult than it has been adjusting to having another person here all the time. Its not been that hard at all. We laugh a lot and I am grateful to be her port in the storm. I think, all things considered, she is doing remarkably well. I am so glad that I was and am here to help support her through this rough patch.

There is nothing like a mother's love when you are sad and hurting.

I am so grateful to have a roof over my head. It's been so cold and snowy this Winter.  More snow is expected today, In fact, there is a winter storm watch in effect at the moment.

On Saturday Eileen and I went out and got another bird feeder and some seed and fat balls for the birds. I had wanted to do it quite a number of weeks ago, but stuff got in the way. So far we have only seen Blue Jays, but hey ho, they are birds too!  And Eileen loves them.

Sunday dinner with the family.  It was so lovely to be there. Cindy cooked a beautiful meal as always.  Dad enjoyed making Eileen laugh.  Eileen enjoyed being there. It was all good. Time spent with family is a real treasure.

This year has been a real trial so far and I am happy to see the back end of my health woes. I am so grateful for the tender mercies of the Lord which attended me during them, and for all of the comfort, support and prayers of others. It really helped me, especially in my low moments and I had quite a few of those, moments where I was afraid my life was going to be challenged in that way forever.  I know . . .  Me = such a drama queen.

I am happy that it is behind me now and I hope and pray that I don't have to go through it again. I am doing my best to try to blast away any kidney stones, etc.  Drinking lemon water, avoiding salt, etc.

I must apologize for any birthdays that I might have missed. I was unable to shop for cards, etc. Belated may be the way to go.

In any case, I am grateful for all of my blessings here today. I am grateful for my home, my faith, my family, my friends, my health, etc.  I am surely blessed with abundance in all of my needs and wants, and even have enough to share with others. Life is good.

A thought to carry with you . . .

Hasselback Turkey Divans

In The English Kitchen today  . . .  Hasselback Turkey Divans.  Another new old recipe that I felt was worth updating and resharing.  Tender turkey tenderloins, filled with a lush broccoli/cheese filling and baked to perfection.  Tender, juicy and delicious. I hope to get back to cooking and sharing some new recipes this week! That is my goal at any rate!

I hope you have a day filled with light and with love.  Be happy, be blessed.  Don't forget!

Saturday Nice . . .

Dawn called! And out across the plain
I heard the prairies move again;
I smelled the sage when dawn uncurled
Her leaves, for incense to the world;
I heard a meadow-lark get up
And pour it's song in day's new cup.

I saw the horses, dim and still
Against the shadow of a hill,
Stand up and shake the sleep away,
And snort their challenge to the day;
The roosters called across the plain
Their thanks that light had come again.

I saw Dawn walk with gracious feet,
Across the stillness of the wheat;
I touched her garments as she passed
Into a farmer's house at last,
And laughed to hear him softly stir
Against the lily hands of her.

I saw blue smoke upon the air,
I heard a woman singing there,
Close by the door and saw her stand
And breathe the fragrance of the land;
And heard her laughter, clear and sweet,
Echoing out across the wheat.

Dawn called! The prairies answered her;
I saw the grasses wake and stir;
I heard the breathing of the air;
Felt Life abundant everywhere;
Saw the glad earth, where shadows run
Drawing her substance from the sun.
~Edna Jacques, Dawn Called
Beside Still Waters, 1952

 This poem might have been about a prairie dawn, but it still resonated with me, who is living in a lush valley between two small mountains. I have seen the dawn walking with gracious feet through our valley as well, and witnessed the sight and heard the sounds of it waking up. Cindy and I watched it waking up yesterday morning as we drove up to the VRH in Kentville to have my procedure. The sky painted with a layer of orange just above the deep lavender of dawn to the South East of the car, a gold ball that rose to almost blind us as we were driving towards it at times, it being hidden behind trees at others. School busses waking up, their engines trembling and smoking, the smell of coffee from each Tim Horton's that we passed as lines to enter in grew in length. (I have seen the lines backed right out onto the roadway at times.)

There is a special light and air of excitement that attends the dawn, no matter where you live.

In Chester, it was accompanied by the silent sound of the milk float as it glided down the street, milk bottles gently clinking together. We were lucky enough to still have milk delivery, and in pint glass bottles, the top of each secured with a little metal cap. It would be a race on some mornings to see who would get to it first, us or the little blue tits that loved to peck holes in the caps and sup their breakfast from the milk fat that lay on top. Thankfully I usually won.

Yes, I was so happy to have the procedure done and finished yesterday. They were very timely in their manner, a lot of the time was spent waiting around in prep, getting gowned up, etc. But the actual procedure itself took only minutes. The anticipation of it was far worse than the act itself. It did not hurt, but felt instead just a tiny bit weird. I need to have an ultrasound sometime over the next few months to make sure my kidneys are alright.  Apparently, according to the Doctor who removed the stent, when they went into remove the stone they had a real problem with it and had to use a balloon. This is probably when I had such difficulties afterwards.  I am happy to say that things are slowly returning to normal, there is no pain now and last night I was able to sleep the whole night through until about 5 this morning without having to get up to use the loo.

I was extremely tired last night however and was in bed by 8:30.

I was so happy to get home yesterday morning.  I left here about quarter to 7 and was home by 11. so very quick considering the distance we had to drive.  We did stop at the Cambridge convenience on the way back and pick up a few things. They had double Nova Scotia oat cakes, put together with peanut butter and half dipped in chocolate. Impossible to resist. Cindy and I each got a box of them. Eileen and I each enjoyed one for our lunch yesterday. One of those is very filling and because of the oats you can almost fool yourself into thinking that you are eating something healthy-ish.

Cindy brought over a small gift for Eileen when she dropped dad off for his tea in the afternoon.  The knitting spool that I had gotten for Eileen was a bit awkward to use. Cindy had managed to get another one which was quite a bit easier and was even able to show her how to use it left-handed. Eileen was thrilled.

Interesting fact.  Four out of five of my children are left-handed. I don't know how that happened. Apparently this is quite rare. The only right handed child I have is my daughter who is the nurse.

I am planning on going to the grocery store this morning.  It's been almost 2 months. I am in dire need of a few things. You can only order so much on amazon. (And it usually costs more.)  Eileen will go as well as Cindy.  I am really craving some fresh fruit and vegetables, plus I want some plain yogurt and, as always, I need cat food. All things being well, I am hoping to go to church tomorrow as well.

We will see how I feel after the outing this morning. It is a lot harder to snap back to normalcy when you are older I guess.  I have been up now for an hour and a half and already feel like I need a nap. That's been January and February for me. Frequent napping and far too much television viewing!

I know I have not written much this morning, but I do feel the need to have another half hours rest so I will end this now with a thought to carry with you  . . .

The recipe I am sharing in The English Kitchen today is for an Easy Ginger Ring Cake. It is an old recipe I got from my friend Carolyn in the U.K. many years ago and it is deliciously studded with candied cherries and ginger.
