Small and Wonderful Things . . .

"The world is fairly studded and strewn with pennies cast broadside from a generous hand. But who gets excited by a mere penny? It is dire poverty indeed when a man is so malnourished and fatigued that he won't stoop to pick up a penny. But if you cultivate a healthy poverty and simplicity, so that finding a penny will literally make your day, then, since the world is in fact planted with pennies, you have with your poverty bought a lifetime of days. It is that simple. What you see is what you get." ~Anne Dillard

A few of the small and wonderful things which bring untold joy into my life. It's the small things in life which truly mean the most. Simple abundance . . . it's the best.

It's very difficult to be in a blind panic here at the moment. This was yesterday afternoon, looking South down the #10 highway.  We were plagued all night with a heavy smell of smoke as the wildfires burning south of us raged out of control. The air was thick with smoke and ash has been falling. It has felt very much like Armageddon.  I hardly slept all Saturday night because of the smell and the fear.

At Cindy's place there were huge chunks of ash and burnt leaves falling into the yard.

The sky was like an orange ball in the sky. I don't know what the other orb is. Perhaps the moon?  I have my bag packed. The car is loaded with water, cat food, litter, etc. My tank almost full of gas although I may go out today and top it up just in case.

The fires are about 25km away, but it is moving rapidly. We did not get any rain from the hurricane, just high winds which exacerbated the fires.  We need help here in Nova Scotia. Our firefighters are exhausted, and it just keeps growing.  We also need rain. A little bit is expected today, but it will not be enough. We need some rain that will be prolonged and not a deluge as the ground is so dry now it would cause flash floods. We just need a gentle, prolonged, sustained rain.

My church is fasting and praying for help, rain, etc. I am grateful for the power of prayer and fasting.

It is hard to feel calm.  But I am trying.

Dan came on Saturday and scrubbed the siding of the hose, as well as my garage door inside and out.  The landlord came and did it the first year I was here, but nobody has come to do it since, and it had gotten quite bad. He did a wonderful job. While he was out there doing it, several neighbors came over wanting to know what he charged. I told him he could have himself a little business going there if he put up a notice on the bulletin board at the local shops to do handy work for local Seniors.  There re lots of us who need help with things, things that we are unable to do for ourselves. He is supposed to go tomorrow and do Jacquie's house for her and sweep out her garage.

What a blessing it is to have someone to do such things for me.  I am grateful.

While Dan was working outside, Cindy was inside and she helped to trim the cat's nails. Also their flea treatments.  I keep the doors closed to the other rooms so that they can't hide under the bed.  These are not their favorite things to have happen to them.

We thought we were done, but noticed that some of the flea treatment had spilled down Nutmeg's back so we had a piece of paper towel to clean it off. I had already opened the doors not thinking anything about it. As soon as he saw the paper towels, he took off into the bathroom and jumped in behind the washing machine and dryer. When he was a kitten and did that I would hang a towel over the back of the dryer, and he would crawl up it to get out. He weighs 17 pounds now and we had just cut his nails so there was nothing to grab a towel with.  And he couldn't turn around enough to be able to get enough leverage to jump back up.

Dan moved the washer out some to give him more room.  I ended up having to drop a case of Kleenex behind the washer so he could jump up onto that and then out of the space.  He looked so pitiful as I was looking down at him. His eyes were pleading "get me out of here."

Never a dull moment. It's all go here.

So grateful we were able to get him out safely.

I was grateful for the opportunity to go to church yesterday morning and partake of the sacrament.  Even though I had only slept for 3 hours Saturday night, I was also able to give my talk. It was well received.  And I was just glad to get it over with.

I do enjoy going to church. It is a great way to renew my spiritual batteries and a great beginning to any week.

I am grateful for my wee little home. I don't need a mansion to be content.  I am thankful for all that I have and I know it is more than enough.  I long for nothing more than what I already have. It brings me peace and contentment. I lack nothing.

I really hope and pray that it stays safe.

Yesterday, it felt as if we were in a War Zone. It was a terrible feeling. I don't know how people cope.  I really don't.  As a planet. We need to smarten up. We need to just be happy with what we have and use some of that to help those people who have not.  We need to make peace, not war. To love and not hate. To share of our abundance so that everyone has enough.

I really don't have a lot more to say this morning. I am grateful for what I am and what I have, for this life I am living.  For my family. For my faith. For my health and my home.

A thought to carry with you  . . .

Ham & Cheese Quesadilla

In The English Kitchen today, Ham & Cheese Quesadilla. This was simply delicious.

I hope you have a truly beautiful day.  Stay safe, be happy, be blessed. Please pray for all who are being affected by wildfires, etc. This is going on all over, not just here in Nova Scotia. Pray for our planet.

Don't forget!

All Things Nice . . .

I took a trip today -- myself and me
And journeyed without price by land and sea,
With queer companions I am bound to say,
I found them on my pantry shelves today,
In packages and little painted tins,
Among the magic of my cupboard bins.

A quaint old-fashioned caddy full of tea
Became a white winged ship that carried me
Across the broad Pacific where the fields
Older than Time, produce abundant yields
Where patient Chinese work with spade and hoe,
Just as they did two thousand years ago.

A row of spices, cinnamon and mace
Became a flaming chariot of space,
I went to far Bombay and Singapore
Saw sunlight falling on a temple floor,
Heard nightingales where tropic seas unroll,
Singing to ease the burden of a soul.

An apple with its russet coat of tan
Was all at once a shining caravan,
Bringing me home again where orchards lie
In the safe peace of a Canadian sky,
A busy housewife happy and content
In a small kitchen where my days are spent.
~Edna Jacques, My Trip
Aunt Hattie's Place,1949

Cindy and I took a trip yesterday in a manner of speaking. We had dropped dad and Maryann off and gone to Sobey's to pick up cat food, (I remembered) and were on our way back to Walmart when we noticed a new place across the road from the mall. Indian Masala Grocery and Takeaway.  We thought we would stop in and check it out!  It actually had not even opened yet. They were having a soft opening yesterday evening, but they welcomed us in and were ever so nice and so helpful.  The place smelled amazing.  Simply amazing. Like spices and sandalwood.  I picked up some cinnamon sticks and whole cardamom, star anise, some ginger and garlic paste and a bag of gram flour. Oh, and a bag of frozen parotta bread. I think we will be stopping by there often. I hope that they do very well.

I tried very hard this morning to get a clear photograph of the hummingbirds coming to the feeder. I was not very successful.  I am having to clean and fill my feeder about twice a week now. They are voraciously feeding at it.  I do not mind in the least for all the pleasure in watching that they bring to me and my feline companions is worth its weight in gold.  A real treasure.

I have always loved watching hummingbirds, for as long as I have had feeders. They were not a bird that we saw in the U.K. I missed them there. I can remember being very excited one afternoon when I was living in the cottage down south. I saw a creature flitting amongst the blossoms of the honeysuckle that grew in the hedge at the back of the cottage. I thought for sure it was a hummingbird for all the way that it was acting. Upon investigation I learned that it was a Hummingbird Hawk Moth. So delightful all the same, just not for the same reasons.

I had always thought that hummingbirds were the only birds which could fly backwards, but I was wrong. Flycatchers, egrets, and herons can fly backward occasionally when faced with a predator or another danger. However, they can only fly backwards for a few seconds.

We have been enjoying the fresh locally grown beans these past weeks. They must be almost finished now. They are so delicious. I could eat them for every meal, steamed until crispy tender with some salt and pepper and a bit of butter and cream.  I know, very naughty.

When I think of beans I think of Yeats and his "Lake Isle of Innisfree."

I will arise now, and go to Innisfree,
And a small cabin build there,
of clay and wattles made;
Nine bean rows will I have there,
a hive for the honey bee,
And live alone in the bee-loud glade.

Somehow there must be magic in the number nine. However, if he were to live in a bee-loud glade, I wonder what he would do with nine rows of beans?  That's a lot of beans for just one man. Maybe they are short rows. Or maybe the fairies would gather in the bright light of the moon to pick and eat beans?  Otherwise, I think Mr. Yates would have had little time for his golden singing, at least in summer. He would be too busy picking and eating beans.

Reading an article recently, I wondered if I am not just all about hobbies? This was somewhat of a disconcerting thought to me. Would I put Cooking first?  Photography? Collecting books? Reading? Painting? Needlework? Dolls? Armchair travel? Music? Writing? Daydreaming? Am I a Jack-of-all-trades and master-of-none?  Sometimes I think I am.

Of all my hobbies, I think that I love writing and the written word the best of all.  It is my favorite occupation. When I am not writing letters, or emails, I am writing short stories, or thinking about short stories I could write, writing poems or even just lists and notes to myself. I find these days if I don't write things down, I lose the thoughts. I write notes about the things I want to get the next time I go to the shops, or I write down small observations that I don't want to forget. Thoughts that strike my fancy . . .  such as "Chickadees wear about their necks three cornered cravats of jet silk."  or  "The silver trunk of the birch tree is like a silver wand glowing in the moonlight, a pencil reaching up towards heaven and pointing the way."

But most days I spent my time writing on here.  Recipes and descriptions of recipes.  My thoughts to you here on this blog as well. I am not sure that I am really very good at either one, but I am sure that it brings me a sense of satisfaction, whether I do it well or not.

It is something that I have loved doing since I was a child, and it has brought me a lifetime of joy in one way or another.

All month I have been thinking about and wanting to go on a picnic.  To just pack up a wee lunch and take myself up to Margaretville and sit there at a picnic table looking out across the bay.  Watching and thinking, smelling the sea air and listening to the gulls and the waves lapping at the rocks along the edge of the shore.  Listening to the fishermen work on mending their nets in their shacks. Watching people walk their dogs along the water's edge.  Just thinking and pondering life as I munch on my sandwich and drink from my bottle.  Or maybe I could go up to Port George and park the car and watch the seals there bathing on the rocks.

If I had a dog I would go. An activity like a picnic by the shore requires company.  Someone to share it with. Preferably someone you care about.  I do not think the cats would gain as much appreciation of it as would a dog, but I could be wrong.

Speaking of dogs, I dreamt of Mitzie last night. Someone had fed her grapes, and, in my dream, I was busy pulling them out of her mouth so that she would not get sick from eating them. For a moment, even though it was not the nicest dream, I was with her again and I cherished the moment.  I miss her every single day, just like I miss my mom.

The people and creatures you love take up spaces in your heart that you have trouble filling with anything else.  They just stay as gaping holes, while you fill up other spaces with other things. In my heart I have both Mitzie and Mother shaped holes that nothing else will ever fill.

Soon now, and I hope truly that the drought has not affected them too much, we should see Winter Squashes starting to appear in the local farm markets. I do so love Winter Squash.  Funny that because when I was a child, they were not top of my list of things that I enjoyed eating. Mom would cook a small squash at Thanksgiving or Christmas to enjoy with our roast turkey.  A little dab would be put on our plates, and I would gag it down.  It was not appealing to me in the least. I have, since becoming an adult, come to really love it.  I like trying different ones come autumn. Some are quite wet in texture, others quite dry. Most are somewhat sweet, and some are really sweet, and I do not mean sugar sweet, but a somewhat earthy sweet.

I enjoy them roasted until they are almost caramelized and then I mash them with butter and salt and pepper.  Sometimes, if I am feeling indulgent, I will add a bit of maple syrup or some brown sugar.

I do not really have a favorite. At one time I would have said Butternut Squash was a favorite, but now, I just love them all. It is funny how your tastes change when you are an adult and how things you once greatly disliked somehow magically become really delicious!

Like Oatmeal. Hated it when I was a child. Love it now.

I am not sure what I will get up to today. I think Dan is going to come over and help me to wash my windows and the siding on the front of my house and the inside of my garage door, which is not looking very nice at the moment. It really needs a good cleaning. Other than that, I am not sure what I will do. A bit of this and a bit of that I suppose. I have already done two loads of laundry this morning as I have sat here writing. That will need folding.

I will fill my day in one way or another.  That is a certainty. Days get filled and days pass by. One after another, they slip off the calendar . . . never to come again. As I have gotten older, I have tried to make each day count for the gift that it is to me.  I think of many people, that I was friends with, or that I went to school with, that are no longer here. Their absence makes me cherish the time I am given even more for I know that these days I have been given are extra blessings. I need to make them count. In one way or another.

I do need to be gathering up what I want to put out for the fall cleanup. I will have to read up on the rules for that and see what is required as far as putting them together goes. I do see that already old sofas and chairs are appearing on the edges of some lawns in town. Oh, and the luxury apartment building that they are putting up is looking more and more like an apartment building every day, but that has nothing to do at all with fall cleanup. I know.  Just remarking on the changes I note.

And my boyfriend, he is still walking on the sidewalk here and there smoking his pipe.  haha, that is a joke. There is a guy in town who wears a ball cap and smokes a pipe that we often see walking here and there. Somehow, he has taken on the misnomer of being called my boyfriend when he is not even close to being that. Nobody is. And if I was looking it would not be someone like him.  He does not appeal to me in that way in the least.  But it is funny to call him my boyfriend, I guess, if for no other reason but we notice him and his pipe.

And with that I will leave you with a thought for the day . . . It promises to be a nice one. It is 14*C/57*F already and expected to be fairly warm and sunny. There are six wildfires burning in the province at the moment with the Long Lake one (the one that is close to me) being the only one burning out of control. We keep praying for rain. The firefighters, etc. are working very hard to bring this fire under control and we are grateful.

A thought to carry with you . . .

Dear Neighbor

FRIDAY, August 22nd, 2025
Estate Lane, Nova Scotia
12*C/53*F
There is an air quality advisory in place
Mostly cloudy, no rain in the forecast

Dear Neighbor,

It is hard to believe that we are soon going to be in the last week of August, and into the month of September. It seems the summer has gone by quite quickly. I do not mind overly much as I do love the Autumn months. They are my favorite time of year.

I managed to get quite a close photo of one of the hummingbirds at the feeder yesterday. A female. I do have a number of them that come. I think four. It is hard to tell as they fly back and forth so quickly, but this appears to be the dominant one and she chases everyone away if she can. She is quite the force to be reckoned with!

The Guinea Fowl have been here every morning this week. Yesterday they were right in front of my front deck but had moved to the drive before I could get my camera ready to snap a shot. I don't know who they belong to, but they are really quite noisy when they are about. I don't mind the noise. It is really far too quiet on this street, and the cats were thrilled to see such a large bird up so close.

My next-door neighbor on the other side stopped by to ask if she could place her green bin on the edge of the far right of my lawn, which would be right outside her garage door.  She has gotten a small one delivered by the town. I said of course I do not mind in the least. She said I was free to use it if I want to. That was very generous of her, but I am not sure if I will. Compost is such a personal thing, and she might not like how I package mine up for disposal, etc. I would not want to offend anyone.

I believe these are storks.  I remember seeing quite a few of them when I visited Strasbourg in the Alsace region of France a number of years back. There were quite a few of them and a special spot for nesting set up in the Parc de l'Orangerie. I had never seen storks before. It was quite fascinating.

Strasbourg itself was a fascinating city.

One of the places visited was the cathedral.  Inside the cathedral was an Astronomical Clock, a Renaissance masterpiece.  It reached all the way up to the ceiling of the cathedral. I had never seen such a large clock. The main attraction of the clock was its animated figures which come out to delight the public every day at 12:30 pm. During this performance, visitors are treated to views of the different ages of life, personified by a child, a teenager, an adult and an old man, all who parade past Death. Higher up the apostles have their own parade, before Christ.  They journey is accompanied by the beating of wings and the sound of a large cock crowing. In front of the clock one can admire the huge Pillar of Angels, which offers a highly original representation of the Last Judgement.

The number of people packed into the cathedral just to see the clock itself was phenomenal.  And they usher you all out before 12:30 because you have to pay to see the performance of the clock.  I can remember feeling quite claustrophobic. We were jammed like sardines and barely crawling on our way out. We had been warned to beware of pickpockets so that added to the feeling. We did not pay to go back in and see the clock in action.

I have been truly blessed to have been able to see all the things that I have seen over the years, however. I cannot complain!

I managed to get my talk for church all written and finessed yesterday.  I am confident now that it is finished and ready to go. We do not have lay pastors in our church.  All of the talks/sermons are given by the members.  Usually there are two or three talks each Sunday. Each lasting about 10 minutes or so. Occasionally you get somebody who will go past their time.  I am the first speaker. That is what I prefer to be.  That way I don't have to try to shorten my talk because someone before me has gone on too long. My talk is about 10 minutes long so there will be plenty of time for the next speaker to give theirs.

When I was living down south in the U.K. one of the ladies from our church gave a small course in Public Speaking. (She also happened to be a good friend of mine.)  That course was invaluable, and I really enjoyed it. It has stood me in good stead all of these years.

I wish I could give a talk like some do, without having it written down in front of me, but alas, I am not that great at it. I need my notes!

Hopefully I won't put anyone to sleep.

This time of year, the heather in the Welsh Hills near where I lived in the Northwest of England would be blooming.  They were flushed with a beautiful pink. It really was a beautiful area to live in. The housing estate I lived on was surrounded by farmers' fields where they grew leeks, which gave off a lovely smell. You could see the Welsh Hills off in the distance and as I said this time of year, they were pink. They changed color with the seasons. In the Winter they would often be white with snow or frost.

There are many things I miss about the U.K., but I am very grateful to be here in Canada now, and near my family. I really missed them when I was living over there. It was not ideal.

Today we will be taking our dad out this afternoon with his friend Maryann.  Cindy and I usually run a few errands together while they have their visit.  I had meant to get a case of wet cat food when I was out the other day, which I forgot so I will have to get some of that today.  I hope that I don't forget again!

They have gone off their dry food for some reason. They are only picking at it. When I crack open their wet food, they are ecstatic!

And of course, the cat treats. You can't live on cat treats. They are supposed to be rare and a treat!

We are supposed to get some high winds this afternoon. That is all we are getting from the Hurricane to the south of us. Any rain will be dropped offshore, and we will only experience high waves and wind. As far as I know the fire is not growing.  There are fires burning all over North America. Climate change. How can anyone deny it. And yet there are many that do.

I was thinking about microplastics last night and how for many years they have been in our body scrubs, etc. washed down the drains and into the environment. I do not use body scrubs. I have bought them in the past, but the idea of those plastics going into the water table, earth, etc. really puts me off. I try really hard these days to be more environmentally aware as I am sure most people do.  Or at least I hope that most people do. There will always be some who do not care.

This early Autumn we are experiencing because of the drought is throwing me off kilter. I am not a fan.

Because I have a ROKU television I have access to the ROKU channels.  I have been enjoying watching a lot of the older sitcoms on there, as well as on TUBI and some of the other free streaming channels (whose names escape me at the moment! huh!)  You can watch Andy Griffith, Hazel, Leave it to Beaver, Cheers, etc.  I saw the other day where The Golden Girls will be starting, and I have been enjoying Who's the Boss this week. I can remember watching Who's the Boss when my children were very young. I can remember wishing I had a lovely house like that.  It was the epitome of luxury to me. And of course, Angela's wardrobe always seemed to be so stylish.  I also loved the Golden Girl's house.

I grew up in Military housing for the most part and spent a great deal of my adult life living in it as well. Because our father was a junior rank, our homes were always very tiny for the most part. We did not really know anything different, and we did not feel deprived.

Someone was telling me that it was required now that legally people have a separate bedroom for each child. Is this true? I do not know how they could enforce such a thing.

In any case I have gone on long enough this morning and not really said too much of anything.  I must be off and about my day. I have a ton of things to do before I go to pick up dad at 12:30.

Easy Ham & Corn Scallop

In the English Kitchen today, Easy Ham & Corn Scallop. This is an old, old recipe that we have been enjoying in my family for many years. Not always with ham in it. Often no ham at all and just as a side dish. It is delicious any way you choose to enjoy it. Simple. Easy. Comforting.

I hope you have a lovely Friday.  Whatever you get up to, I hope it brings you joy and peace.  Don't forget!

My Favorite Things . . .

Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens . . . these are some of the things in life that I enjoy, and which make me happy, inspire me, or put a smile on my face. Maybe some of them are yours too.  Let's share!

Orange Marmalade  . . .  I love that combination of bitter and sweet.

Oh, it's the little cast iron dinner bell that I had in the U.K. That was really one of my favorite things. I loved it.

Taking tea . . . it's such a wonderful activity, even if you do it just for yourself. You can pretend you're Jane Austin.

A table set with pretty things. I used to love setting the table at the manor. Such beautiful cutlery, china, crystal etc.  Table linens. It was all so beautiful.

Owls. I love owls.  There was an Owl sanctuary not too far from where I lived in the U.K. They are such fascinating creatures.  I remember one time driving home from a nighttime activity at church in the U.K. a white barn owl was flying alongside of the car. It was really neat.

Pretty stationary.  I love looking at it but cannot bring myself to use it. I am afraid that I will never see it again so I find myself hoarding it. I know . . . very greedy of me.

Pink ranunculus . . .

Rustic mountain cabins . . . I would be a tiny bit afraid of bears though . . .

Sheep, they are such gentle creatures. I have only ever seen one flock of black sheep. They were in a field outside of Chirk.

Misty mornings  . . .

Pretty book covers  . . .

Flower markets  . . .

Plants on a windowsill . . .

A white picket fence . . .

The curiosity of wildlife . . .

This made me chuckle.

Spending time with family.  I had a great day yesterday. I was out with Cindy for a good part of the day and then we both went out to supper with Dad last night as Hazel wasn't going to be there. We did not want him to eat on his own and he was going no matter what. Time spent with family is never wasted.

Caesar Pork Chops

In The English Kitchen today  . . .  One Pan Caesar Pork Chops. Tender, juicy, delicious and very simple to make. Only one pan and three simple ingredients, not counting the cherry tomatoes which are optional.

I hope you have a lovely day. Chilly again this morning, but it has been warming up nicely during the day. From what I can find out this morning the fire is stable and staying at the same size.  We are expecting high winds (no rain) from the hurricane this weekend so we will see how that goes.   Whatever you get up to this morning, don't forget!
