A Day Book . . .

OUTSIDE MY WINDOW ...

Its very chilly out this morning. But Partly sunny. This is a photo I took a few days back of some of the colours down the road.  It's such a pretty time of year. I love it.

I AM THINKING ...

I feel so bad for Eileen. She is in quite a bit of pain down below, and there doesn't seem to be a lot that I can do for her. I think it is the stitches drying and pulling. She has only one heavy duty pain killer left. After that it is Tylenol. I have gotten her Tylenol 1's. But I am not sure they will be strong enough. I keep hoping and praying that today will be better, but she was still in a lot of pain when I helped her to go to the loo earlier.

I AM ALSO THINKING ...

One day at a time. That is how we get through this. One day at a time. Dwell on the good and the blessings. We will get there.

I AM GRATEFUL FOR ...

A heart that chooses joy, even when it's the hardest choice to make.

I AM ALSO GRATEFUL FOR ...

STANDING FOR SOMETHING, by Gordon B Hinckley

10 neglected virtues that will heal our hearts and homes

In this national bestseller, the late president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Gordon B. Hinckley, has created a classic look at the values that can change our world--and how to stand up for them. Drawing on anecdotes from his much-admired life of faith and service, as well as examples from American culture today, he examines ten virtues that have always illuminated the path to a better world: love, honesty, morality, civility, learning, forgiveness and mercy, thrift and industry, gratitude, optimism, and faith. He then shows how the two guardians of virtue--marriage and the family--can keep us on that path, even in difficult times.

Standing for Something is an inspiring blueprint for what we all can do--as individuals, as a nation, and as a world community--to rediscover the values and virtues that have historically made us strong and that will lead us to a brighter future.

I have read this before. It is not a bad thing to review something inspiring like this every now and then.

FOR TODAY, September 22nd, 2026

OUTSIDE MY WINDOW ...

Its a bit chilly at 5*C/41*F. I went out to check my mail not long after I got out of my shower. The sun was just coming up. No frost but brrrr, it was cold.  It's not supposed to rain today, however. So that's good.

I AM THINKING ...

This week I have gotten three emails from a guy purporting to be Author J.M. Dalgliesh, one from a lady purporting to be an editor from Harper Collins, and another from some company in Shaghai that says someone is trying to register my domain name for the English Kitchen. They must think that people are incredibly stupid. Not falling for any of that.

I AM ALSO THINKING ...

My cleaners are coming today. I really love how fresh my house smells after they have been here and how tidy it is. I love cleaning day.

I AM GRATEFUL FOR ...

These almost six years I have had to be able to foster relationships back here in Canada. Coming back was the best decision that I could have made. I have had some great times with my father. I have been able to be here for my daughter in a way I couldn't have otherwise. I have my sister as a best friend (she always was anyways). I've been able to spend time with my brother and parts of his family. My two oldest sons, five of my grandchildren. What a blessing these years have been for me.

I AM ALSO GRATEFUL FOR ...

My faith which has helped to sustain me through all of the changes and upheaval. Where would I be without it, and of course, all of YOUR love and support. When you think about it all, I have been incredibly blessed.

Cheddar, Garlic & Potato Soup

IN THE KITCHEN ...

I made this phenomenal Cheddar, Garlic & Potato Soup yesterday.  It was really delicious and went together very quickly.  With these chillier days, soup weather is upon us!

ON MY "TO COOK" LIST ...

I've always wanted to try these. I have made the lunch lady brownies before and they were really good. I am thinking these must be as well!

THIS I BELIEVE ...

A life focused on things like this rather than what the world would have us focus on is a much better life to be living. These days, there is not much in the world that isn't a lie.

SOMETHING THAT IS NICE ...

Fresh apple cider. You can get it at all the local farm markets in the fall. It's gorgeous.

SOMETHING ELSE THAT IS NICE ...

Mail that isn't junk or a bill.

I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO ...

The autumn frosts will lie upon the grass
Like bloom on grapes of purple - brown and gold.
The misted early mornings will be cold;
The little puddles will be roofed with glass.
The sun, which burns from copper into brass,
Melts these at noon, and makes the boys unfold
Their knitted mufflers; full as they can hold
Fat pockets dribble chestnuts as they pass.
~Elinor Wylie (1885 - 1928)

That's one thing I miss from the U.K. Conker Battles. In the autumn children would gather the fallen nuts from the Horse Chestnut trees and have battles with them. The chestnuts are called conkers and they would thread these onto strings and then  take turns striking each other's in an attempt to break the others nut.  Whoever breaks wins.

THE HOLY FIRM, A Lyrical Meditation on Nature, Mortality, and the Sacred , By Annie Dillard

"This is a book of great richness, beauty and power and thus very difficult to do justice to in a brief review. . . . The violence is sometimes unbearable, the language rarely less than superb. Dillard's description of the moth's death makes Virginia Woolf's go dim and Edwardian. . . . Nature seen so clear and hard that the eyes tear. . . . A rare and precious book." — Frederick Buechner, New York Times Book Review

A profound book about the natural world—both its beauty and its cruelty—from Pulitzer Prize-winning author Annie Dillard In 1975 Dillard took up residence on an island in Puget Sound, in a wooden room furnished with "one enormous window, one cat, one spider, and one person." For the next two years she asked herself questions about time, reality, sacrifice, death, and the will of God. In Holy the Firm, she writes about a moth consumed in a candle flame, about a seven-year-old girl burned in an airplane accident, about a baptism on a cold beach. But behind the moving curtain of what she calls "the hard things—rock mountain and salt sea," she sees, sometimes far off and sometimes as close by as a veil or air, the power play of holy fire.

How to live with grace and wonder in the natural world.
