A Day Book . . .

FOR TODAY, November 3rd, 2026

OUTSIDE MY WINDOW ...

Its dull and grey, not a lot happening.  It's mostly cloudy with pewter coloured skies, a light drizzle falling. It's 9*C/50*F and not expected to get much warmer than this today.

I AM THINKING ...

About words and how much I love them.  I love discovering new ones. Remembering them is a different thing, but I do love discovering them. I  really liked this one. I can almost hear the sounds the world makes. Sometimes the house cracks too.

I AM ALSO THINKING ...

Eileen let it slip the other day that my daughter Amanda calls me Marie. She doesn't call me mom. You wouldn't think that something so simple as that would matter, but it really hurt my feelings in a way I never imagined. I had just bought her a Birthday card for her Birthday in early December on Friday when I was out with my sister. I am having second thoughts now about sending it.

I AM GRATEFUL FOR ...

This. Obviously I have one of these or I would have been extinguished a long time ago. I just keep plugging along. My feelings are especially tender at this time of year. I am grateful for the flame and for my faith. Without that I might have given up a long time agon.

I AM ALSO GRATEFUL FOR ...

Worthy distractions. Good books, good music, the scriptures, family . . .  I am going to teach a couple of people with the sister missionaries later today. That could be interesting.

Christmas Cookie Bars

IN THE KITCHEN ...

Christmas Cookie Bars.  Yes, I went there. I was going to do some for Halloween, but by the time I went to pick up the stuff there was no Halloween cookie dough left. They did have some of the Christmas ones. I thought it would be a fun and easy project for Eileen and myself.  We were quite pleased with how they turned out. You could dress them up a bit with sprinkles, etc. if you wanted to. We left them plain.  They are rather tasty if I don't say so myself.

ON MY "TO COOK" LIST ...

These Big Kahuna Dogs look and sound delicious. From Life's a Tomato. I love a good hotdog.

THIS I BELIEVE ...

I do believe this to be true.  I also think that when someone shows you who they really are, you are best to remember it.

SOMETHING THAT IS NICE ...

Well, we all know I have a predilection for ginger cats. lol  Nutmeg is so funny. His internal clock hasn't gone back yet so he has taken to pestering me for his dinner an hour early. Yesterday he was sitting on the desk next to me as I worked, and every so often he would reach out and bat me with an accompanying meow. I made him wait as long as possible before I gave in.

SOMETHING ELSE THAT IS NICE ...

Having something to look forward to.

I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO ...

My cleaners are coming today. I always love how fresh the house seems to be after they have been.

I AM WANTING TO CREATE ...

Crochet socks, although I am not sure how different they are than slippers.

A simple scrap buster  . . .

Floor turtles  . . .

Little Gnomes  . . .

Little character dolls  . . .

SOMETHING I ENJOY ...

Asian rice crackers. The only ones I am not fond of are the ones with the nori wrapped around them, but I am not a fan of nori.

SOMETHING ELSE I ENJOY ...

Pretty pottery pieces.

I AM READING ...

THE COMMONER, by John Burnham Swartz.

I have always been fascinated by Oriental Culture, and this book is the story of how, the first commoner to marry into the Japanese imperial family was, at the age of 24, exposed to brutal public scrutiny and the unyielding rigors of royal life, robbing her of her identity and sending her into a crushing depression.

With a quiet layering of details, “The Commoner” follows Haruko Endo from her childhood through a heady courtship by the crown prince. When she marries him, Haruko begins a life of miserable isolation in which not even her children are truly her own. In the book’s final quarter Haruko sees her life reflected in the suffering of her daughter-in-law, Keiko (modeled on the real-life Crown Princess Masako), also a commoner who marries into the royal family.

This is compelling reading and a book I have read several times and am reading and enjoying it again for about the third time. I just love it.

THINGS THAT CATCH MY FANCY ...

Pottery mugs and jugs  . . .

Crows  . . .

Tudor era architecture  . . .

Tower Bridge. Many people mistake this for London Bridge. It is not. London Bridge is just a simple bridge. This is Tower Bridge and is situated very near to the Tower of London. In fact you can see it almost next to the Tower.

Wood fires  . . .

MAKES ME SMILE ...

My little purrito.  Last night on the back of the sofa. She makes me smile all the time.

SOMETHING TO WATCH

Eileen and I are really enjoying watching this on Netflix. It was one of my favourite shows when I was growing up.

  1. A dreary day here too, misty rain coming down. On the plus side it is a day to wear the new coat I got that is water repellent. I have a dental checkup this morning. Always glad when that is out of the way That is nice you are both enjoying Betwitched, was a great show. Make the most of today what ever the weather.

    1. I need to get a new coat. I had gotten one but gave it to Eileen as it was too big for me and she needed it more. Will be soon time for winter coats though! Happy day! xoxo

  2. Motherhood is everlasting no matter the name. The hurt is palpable, but taking the high road (as your sweet self is wont to do) and sending the card anyway will help lessen the heaviness of heart. Your flame may have flickered but it will not be extinguished and truly in future, the regret will not belong to you. Hugs!

    1. This is true. It is not a role we can ever relinquish is it. I am sending the card. Thanks so much for your lovely thoughts. Much appreciated. xoxo

  3. Oh Marie, don't sink to your daughter's level. Send the card and think about adding a note thanking her for her tender care for Eileen. It might not change her heart toward you, but it will be balm to your heart.
Thank you for continuing to share your life. I look forward to your post every day.

  4. I am so sorry for your pain, Marie!! I am sometimes stumped myself in my situation...because it would seem our kids would know that we HAD A CHOICE in having them. We could so easily have washed them down the drain. You would think it might mean something. Well, as my mama told me, "the chickens DO come home to roost"...one day your daughter will understand in a way you could not imagine, more of how you feel. I know no one wishes bad things to come to their kids especially...but if they sow things, they will indeed reap too. Both good and bad. And as to what Eileen told you, no matter what, it is best to know the truth. Meanwhile, maybe you can find other ways to bless your children who do so love you!!! Focus on them awhile. And feel no guilt for so doing.
There are certain people that I could sign my name as Mom, etc. but I choose to just sign it "me". Yes in low case. Because of the low esteem they show, I feel it best to be in lower case, "me".

    1. I will do the right thing and send it Elizabeth, regardless. I have come to learn in life that if I do the right things then nobody can accuse me of doing the wrong things. Hugs, xoxo

    2. It is difficult to know when to call it quits on doing something, even like sending a card. I have still not quit yet on sending a card and money to kin who usually do not even text me a thank you. Somehow they got the message from somewhere not to bother...if they pick it up in person will say thanks but otherwise no response. I am close to stopping tho...and for another good reason...things are getting so expensive that we are having to cut here and there and looking for more ways to cut expenses. Tho cards do not cost a lot....esp. if one can go to the dollar store. Best wishes. xoxo

  5. Send the card, it’s in your nature to care about others. Angharad

Your comments mean the world to me, and while I may not be able to address each one individually, each one is important to me and each one counts. Thanks so much!
